⁶ The same day Pharaoh commanded the ^(A)taskmasters of the people and their ^(B)foremen,

¹⁹ The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said, “You shall by no means reduce your number of bricks, your daily task each day.”

¹⁰ So the ^(A)taskmasters and the foremen of the people went out and said to the people, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I will not give you straw.

¹³ The ^(A)taskmasters were urgent, saying, “Complete your work, your daily task each day, as when there was straw.” ¹⁴ And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh's ^(B)taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today and yesterday, as in the past?”

¹⁵ Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, “Why do you treat your servants like this?

¹¹ Therefore they set taskmasters over them ^(A)to afflict them with heavy ^(B)burdens. They built for Pharaoh ^(C)store cities, Pithom and ^(D)Raamses.

¹¹ Moreover, Uzziah had an army of soldiers, fit for war, in divisions according to the numbers in the muster made by Jeiel the secretary and Maaseiah the officer, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king's commanders.

⁴ And to Isaac I gave ^(A)Jacob and Esau. ^(B)And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, ^(C)but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.

The Covenant Renewal at Shechem

24 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel ^(A)to Shechem and ^(B)summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And ^(C)they presented themselves before God.

³³ And all Israel, ^(A)sojourner as well as native born, with their elders and officers and their judges, stood on opposite sides of the ark before the Levitical priests ^(B)who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, ^(C)just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel.
