⁹ Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men for us and go out; fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.”^(A)

⁴⁴ Moses came and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and Joshua^[a] son of Nun.

¹³ So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up onto the mountain of God.

²⁰ So Moses took his wife and his sons, put them on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt, and Moses carried the staff of God in his hand.^(A)

² The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A staff.”^(A)

⁸ For if Joshua had given them rest, God^[a] would not speak later about another day.

⁴⁵ Our ancestors in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the peoples whom God drove out before our ancestors. And it was there until the time of David,^(A)

³ So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of your number for the war, so that they may go against Midian, to execute the Lord’s vengeance on Midian. ⁴ You shall send a thousand from each of the tribes of Israel to the war.”

²⁸ And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men,^[a] said, “My lord Moses, stop them!”^(A)

¹³ And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the sword.
