^25 (A)Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and ^(B)gave himself up for her, ²⁶ that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by ^(C)the washing of water ^(D)with the word, ²⁷ so ^(E)that he might present the church to himself in splendor, ^(F)without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.^{[a] 28} In the same way ^(G)husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. ²⁹ For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, ³⁰ because ^(H)we are members of his body. ^31 (I)“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and ^(J)the two shall become one flesh.” ³² This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.

¹⁶ Jesus said to her, “Go, ^(A)call your husband, and come here.” ¹⁷ The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; ¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” ¹⁹ The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that ^(B)you are ^(C)a prophet. ^20 (D)Our fathers worshiped on ^(E)this mountain, but you say that ^(F)in Jerusalem is ^(G)the place where people ought to worship.” ²¹ Jesus said to her, ^(H)“Woman, believe me, ^(I)the hour is coming when ^(J)neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. ^22 (K)You worship what you do not know; ^(L)we worship what we know, for ^(M)salvation is ^(N)from the Jews. ²³ But ^(O)the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father ^(P)in spirit and ^(Q)truth, for the Father ^(R)is seeking such people to worship him. ²⁴ God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” ²⁵ The woman said to him, “I know that ^(S)Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, ^(T)he will tell us all things.” ²⁶ Jesus said to her, ^(U)“I who speak to you am he.”

²⁷ Just then ^(V)his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” ²⁸ So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, ²⁹ “Come, see a man ^(W)who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” ³⁰ They went out of the town and were coming to him.
