¹³ But everything exposed by the light^(A) becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.

⁸ For you were once^(A) darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light^{(B) 9} (for the fruit^(C) of the light consists in all goodness,^(D) righteousness and truth) ¹⁰ and find out what pleases the Lord.^(E)

¹⁴ “You are the light of the world.^(A) A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. ¹⁵ Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.^{(B) 16} In the same way, let your light shine before others,^(C) that they may see your good deeds^(D) and glorify^(E) your Father in heaven.

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

⁵ This is the message we have heard^(A) from him and declare to you: God is light;^(B) in him there is no darkness at all. ⁶ If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness,^(C) we lie and do not live out the truth.^{(D) 7} But if we walk in the light,^(E) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all^[a] sin.^(F)

⁹ Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister^[a](A) is still in the darkness.^{(B) 10} Anyone who loves their brother and sister^[b] lives in the light,^(C) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.^{(D) 11} But anyone who hates a brother or sister^(E) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.^(F) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.^(G)
