⁸ For ^(A)by grace you have been saved ^(B)through faith. And this is ^(C)not your own doing; ^(D)it is the gift of God, ^9 (E)not a result of works, ^(F)so that no one may boast. ¹⁰ For ^(G)we are his workmanship, ^(H)created in Christ Jesus ^(I)for good works, ^(J)which God prepared beforehand, ^(K)that we should walk in them.

¹⁸ But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith ^(A)apart from your works, and I will show you my faith ^(B)by my works. ^19 (C)You believe that God is one; you do well. Even ^(D)the demons believe—and shudder! ²⁰ Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? ^21 (E)Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? ²² You see that ^(F)faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed ^(G)by his works;

¹² Therefore, my beloved, ^(A)as you have always ^(B)obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, ¹³ for ^(C)it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for ^(D)his good pleasure.
