Abimelek försöker bli kung
9 En dag gick Gideons son Abimelek till Sikem för att tala med sina morbröder.
2 Gå och fråga Sikems ledare om de hellre vill ha sjuttio kungar, Gideons sjuttio söner, än en enda, det vill säga jag, som är av ert eget kött och blod! sa han till dem.
3 Hans morbröder gick då till de ledande männen i staden och lade fram Abimeleks förslag. De ansåg att eftersom hans mor var från deras egen stad, så kunde de acceptera honom.
4 De gav honom pengar som offrats i Baal-Berits tempel, och för dem anställde han en del löst folk, äventyrare som var beredda att göra allt vad han bad om.
5 Han tog dem med sig till sin fars hus i Ofra, och där dödade de alla hans sjuttio halvbröder utom en, Jotam, den yngste av dem alla, som lyckades fly och gömma sig.
6 Därefter samlades alla invånare i Sikem och Millo och utropade Abimelek till kung under eken invid tornet i Sikem.
7 När Jotam hörde detta, ställde han sig högst uppe på berget Gerissim och ropade till Sikems män: Om ni vill få Guds välsignelse ska ni lyssna till mig.
8 En gång beslutade träden att välja en kung. Först frågade de olivträdet,
9 men det svarade nej och sa:'Skulle jag sluta att ge olivolja, som är en välsignelse för både Gud och människor, för att stå och svaja över de andra träden?'
10 Då vände de sig till fikonträdet. 'Kan inte du bli vår kung?'
11 Men fikonträdet vägrade också: 'Skulle jag sluta att bära ljuvlig frukt bara för att lyfta mitt huvud över de andra träden?'
12 Då tillfrågades vinstocken: 'Kan inte du regera över oss?'
13 Men vinstocken svarade: 'Skulle jag sluta att ge vin, som gläder både Gud och människor, bara för att bli mäktigare än alla de andra träden?'
14 Då vände de sig slutligen till törnbusken: 'Du kan väl bli vår kung!' bad de.
15 Då svarade törnbusken: 'Om det verkligen är sant att ni vill ha mig till kung, så kom då och böj er i skuggan av mig. Om ni inte gör det, ska eld komma ut ur mig och bränna ner de stora cedrarna i Libanon!'
16 Tänk därför efter, om ni har handlat rätt, när ni har utropat Abimelek till kung! Är det rätt mot Gideon och alla hans ättlingar?
17 Min far stred för er och riskerade livet för att befria er från midjaniterna,
18 men ändå har ni gjort uppror mot honom och avrättat hans sjuttio söner på en och samma sten. Och nu har ni utropat hans slavinnas son, Abimelek, till er kung, därför att han är släkt med er.
19 Om ni har handlat rätt mot Gideon och hans familj, då ska ni och Abimelek få en lycklig tid tillsammans.
20 Men om ni handlat orätt mot Gideon, då ska Abimelek med eld döda invånarna i Sikem och Millo, och de i sin tur ska döda Abimelek!
21 Jotam flydde och bosatte sig i Beer. Han var rädd för sin bror Abimelek.
22-23 Tre år senare lät Gud fiendskap uppstå mellan Abimelek och invånarna i Sikem, som gjorde uppror mot honom.
24 Detta var straffet som Abimelek och folket fick, för att de tillsammans hade dödat Gideons sjuttio söner.
25 Sikems män lade sig i bakhåll för handelskaravanerna för att råna dem och därigenom beröva Abimelek hans inkomster från dessa och skada hans rykte. Men någon varnade Abimelek för deras sammansvärjning.
26 Samtidigt flyttade Gaal, Ebeds son, in i Sikem tillsammans med sina bröder. Ebed blev snart en av de ledande i staden.
27 Under skördefesten samlades man i avgudatemplet. Vinet flödade, och alla började uttala förbannelser över Abimelek.
28 Vem är egentligen Abimelek? frågade Gaal. Och varför ska han vara vår kung? Varför ska vi vara hans tjänare? Han och hans vän Sebul borde vara våra tjänare. Nej, ner med Abimelek!
29 Låt mig bli kung över er, så ska ni snart få se hur det går för Abimelek. Säg till honom: 'Samla ihop en armé och kom och strid mot mig!'
30 Men när kung Sebul, borgmästaren i staden, fick höra vad Gaal hade sagt, blev han rasande.
31 Han sände i hemlighet ett meddelande till Abimelek och lät honom veta vad som höll på att hända. Gaal, Ebeds son, och hans släktingar har flyttat till Sikem, och nu försöker de få hela staden att göra uppror.
32 Kom med dina män i kväll. Göm er på fälten
33 och storma sedan staden i gryningen. När Gaal och hans män kommer ut för att strida mot dig, kan du göra vad du vill med dem!
34 Abimelek och hans män delade upp sig i fyra grupper och drog på kvällen ner mot staden och omringade den.
35 På morgonen när Gaal stod i stadsporten och diskuterade med de lokala ledarna, började Abimelek och hans män tåga mot staden.
36 När Gaal såg dem, ropade han till Sebul: Titta upp mot berget där! Ser du inte att det kommer folk där uppifrån? Nej, svarade Sebul. Det är bara skuggor av morgonsolen.
37 Jo, titta där! Jag är säker på att det är folk som kommer mot oss, fortsatte Gaal. Och titta där! Där kommer andra på vägen förbi teckentydareken!
38 Då vände sig Sebul triumferande mot honom. Hur är det nu med alla dina stora ord? frågade han. Vem var det som sa: 'Vem är egentligen Abimelek, och varför skulle han vara vår kung?' Mannen du hånade och förbannade står utanför stadsporten. Gå ut och strid mot honom!
39 Gaal drog då ut i strid med männen från Sikem.
40 De blev besegrade av Abimelek, som drev dem tillbaka, och det låg sårade och döda ända fram till stadsporten.
41 Abimelek bodde sedan kvar i Aruma, men Sebul drev ut Gaal och alla hans släktingar ur staden och lät dem inte längre bo där.
42 Dagen därpå gick folket i Sikem ut på fälten för att arbeta. Någon hade förvarnat Abimelek
43 om detta, och han lade sig i bakhåll med sina män, som han delat upp i tre grupper. När männen från staden kom ut, rusade de fram från sina gömställen och gick till attack.
44 Abimelek och hans grupp stormade fram mot stadsporten och hindrade på så sätt männen från Sikem att komma in i staden igen, medan de andra två grupperna dödade dem som var på fälten.
45 Slakten pågick hela dagen. Till sist hade Abimelek intagit hela staden. Han jämnade den med marken, dödade alla som bodde där och strödde salt över platsen.
46 I grannstaden Migdal såg man vad som hände och tog sin tillflykt till fästningen vid Baal-Berits tempel.
47-48 När Abimelek fick veta detta, tog han sina trupper med sig upp på berget Salmon. Där tog han en yxa, högg av grenar från träden och lade dem på sina axlar. Skynda er nu och gör precis som jag! sa han till sina män.
49 Då högg också de av var sin gren och följde efter Abimelek till staden. Där staplade de upp veden mot muren och tände på. Alla där inne dog, över tusen personer.
50 Därefter anföll Abimelek staden Tebes och intog den.
51 I själva centrum av staden fanns ett mycket starkt torn. Dit flydde befolkningen, blockerade ingången och klättrade upp på taket för att se vad som skulle hända.
52 Medan Abimelek förberedde sig för att bränna tornet,
53 var det en kvinna på taket som kastade ner en kvarnsten. Den träffade Abimelek i huvudet.
54 Döda mig! ropade den skadade Abimelek till sin unge vapendragare. Ingen ska få säga att en kvinna dödade Abimelek!Den unge mannen genomborrade då Abimelek med sitt svärd och dödade honom,
55 och när hans män såg att han var död, skingrades de och gick hem igen, var och en till sitt.
56-57 På detta sätt straffade Gud både Abimelek och männen i Sikem för att de hade dödat Gideons sjuttio söner. Jotams förbannelse gick allså i uppfyllelse.

Abimelek
9 Abimelek(A) son of Jerub-Baal(B) went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan, 2 “Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.(C)”
3 When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.” 4 They gave him seventy shekels[a] of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith,(D) and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels,(E) who became his followers. 5 He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers,(F) the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham,(G) the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.(H) 6 Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo(I) gathered beside the great tree(J) at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.
7 When Jotham(K) was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim(L) and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’
9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine,(M) which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’
15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade;(N) but if not, then let fire come out(O) of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’(P)
16 “Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves? 17 Remember that my father fought for you and risked(Q) his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian. 18 But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons(R) on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you. 19 So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today?(S) If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too! 20 But if you have not, let fire come out(T) from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem(U) and Beth Millo,(V) and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
21 Then Jotham(W) fled, escaping to Beer,(X) and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.
22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(Y) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(Z) the shedding(AA) of their blood, might be avenged(AB) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(AC) murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
26 Now Gaal son of Ebed(AD) moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him. 27 After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden(AE) them, they held a festival in the temple of their god.(AF) While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek. 28 Then Gaal son of Ebed(AG) said, “Who(AH) is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor,(AI) Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek? 29 If only this people were under my command!(AJ) Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, ‘Call out your whole army!’”[b](AK)
30 When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry. 31 Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait(AL) in the fields. 33 In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.(AM)”
34 So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies. 35 Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate(AN) just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.(AO)
36 When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
37 But Gaal spoke up again: “Look, people are coming down from the central hill,[c] and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ tree.”
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed?(AP) Go out and fight them!”
39 So Gaal led out[d] the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek. 40 Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled. 41 Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.
42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek. 43 So he took his men, divided them into three companies(AQ) and set an ambush(AR) in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them. 44 Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down. 45 All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city(AS) and scattered salt(AT) over it.
46 On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple(AU) of El-Berith. 47 When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there, 48 he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon.(AV) He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!” 49 So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.
50 Next Abimelek went to Thebez(AW) and besieged it and captured it. 51 Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women—all the people of the city—had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. 52 Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, 53 a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.(AX)
54 Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me,(AY) so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his servant ran him through, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.
56 Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness.(AZ) The curse of Jotham(BA) son of Jerub-Baal came on them.

Abimelech's Conspiracy
9 Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to (A)his mother's relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother's family, 2 “Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all (B)seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that (C)I am (D)your bone and your flesh.”
3 And his mother's relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, (E)“He is our brother.” 4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of (F)Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired (G)worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. 5 And he went to his father's house at (H)Ophrah (I)and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. 6 And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all (J)Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.
7 When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on top of (K)Mount Gerizim and cried aloud and said to them, “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you. 8 (L)The trees once went out to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, (M)‘Reign over us.’ 9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my abundance, by which gods and men are honored, and go hold sway over the trees?’ 10 And the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 11 But the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go hold sway over the trees?’ 12 And the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 13 But the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my wine that (N)cheers God and men and go hold sway over the trees?’ 14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come and reign over us.’ 15 And the bramble said to the trees, ‘If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and (O)take refuge in my shade, but if not, (P)let fire come out of the bramble and devour (Q)the cedars of Lebanon.’
16 “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with (R)Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him (S)as his deeds deserved— 17 for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian, 18 and you have risen up against my father's house this day (T)and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made (U)Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, (V)because he is your relative— 19 if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then (W)rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. 20 But if not, (X)let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and from Beth-millo and devour Abimelech.” 21 And Jotham ran away and fled and went to (Y)Beer and lived there, because of Abimelech his brother.
The Downfall of Abimelech
22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. 23 (Z)And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem (AA)dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24 (AB)that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. 25 And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech.
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him. 27 And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into (AC)the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, (AD)“Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of (AE)Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? 29 Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech. I would say[a] to Abimelech, ‘Increase your army, and come out.’”
30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly,[b] saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up[c] the city against you. 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the people who are with you, and set an ambush in the field. 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city. And when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may do to them (AF)as your hand finds to do.”
34 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him rose up by night and set an ambush against Shechem in four companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city, and Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from the ambush. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from (AG)the mountaintops!” And Zebul said to him, “You mistake[d] the shadow of the mountains for men.” 37 Gaal spoke again and said, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.” 38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your mouth now, you who said, (AH)‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them.” 39 And Gaal went out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him. And many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. 41 And Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives, so that they could not dwell at Shechem.
42 On the following day, the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. 43 He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city. So he rose against them and killed them. 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him (AI)rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and killed them. 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and (AJ)he razed the city and (AK)sowed it with salt.
46 When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered (AL)the stronghold of the house of (AM)El-berith. 47 Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 And Abimelech went up to Mount (AN)Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” 49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against (AO)the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the roof of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 (AP)And a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech's head and crushed his skull. 54 (AQ)Then he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” And his young man thrust him through, and he died. 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his home. 56 (AR)Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. 57 And God also made all the evil of the men of Shechem return on their heads, and upon them came (AS)the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
