Petar i Ivan pred Velikim vijećem
4 Dok su Petar i Ivan govorili narodu, prišli su im svećenici, zapovjednik hramske straže i neki saduceji[a]. 2 Uzrujali su se zbog toga što su Petar i Ivan poučavali i navješćivali uskrsnuće od mrtvih na Isusovom primjeru. 3 Uhitili su ih, a kako je već bila večer, stavili su ih u pritvor do sljedećeg dana. 4 A mnogi su od onih, koji su bili čuli njihovu poruku, povjerovali. Tako se broj onih koji su povjerovali popeo na otprilike pet tisuća.
5 Sutradan su se židovski vođe, starješine i učitelji Zakona[b] okupili u Jeruzalemu. 6 Tamo su bili i vrhovni svećenik Ananija, Kaifa, Ivan, Aleksandar i svi iz obitelji vrhovnog svećenika. 7 Izveli su apostole pred njih i počeli ih ispitivati: »Čijom ste silom i u čije ime to učinili?«
8 Tada im je Petar, ispunjen Svetim Duhom, rekao: »Narodni vođe i starješine! 9 Ako nas danas ispitujete zbog dobrog djela učinjenog jednom invalidu i pitate nas kako je izliječen, 10 onda biste svi vi i čitav izraelski narod trebali znati: to je učinjeno po imenu Isusa Krista iz Nazareta, kojeg ste vi razapeli i kojeg je Bog podigao iz mrtvih. Po njemu ovaj čovjek sada stoji pred vama zdrav. 11 Isus je
‘kamen koji ste vi, graditelji, odbacili,
a koji je postao temeljnim kamenom’.[c]
12 Jedino Isus može spasiti! Niti jedno drugo ime na svijetu nije dano ljudima da se po njemu mogu spasiti.«
13 Kad su vidjeli Petrovu i Ivanovu neustrašivost i shvatili da su samo obični, neobrazovani ljudi, ostali su zadivljeni. Onda su shvatili da su njih dvojica bila s Isusom. 14 Budući da je čovjek, kojeg su iscijelili stajao tamo s njima, nisu im na to ništa više mogli odgovoriti. 15 Naredili su im da izađu iz vijećnice, a zatim se među sobom posavjetovali. Rekli su: 16 »Što da učinimo s ovim ljudima? Svima koji žive u Jeruzalemu jasno je da su oni učinili veliko čudo. Mi to ne možemo zanijekati. 17 No zabranimo im da ubuduće govore o tom imenu. Tako se njihovo učenje neće više širiti među ljudima.«
18 Pozvali su ih unutra i naredili im da ubuduće ne govore niti poučavaju u Isusovo ime. 19 Ali Petar i Ivan su im odgovorili: »Prosudite sami je li ispravno pred Bogom da budemo poslušni vama, a ne Bogu. 20 Ne možemo a da ne govorimo o onome što smo čuli i vidjeli.« 21 Židovski su im starješine opet zaprijetili pa ih pustili. Nisu mogli pronaći nikakav izgovor da ih kazne jer su svi veličali Boga zbog onoga što se dogodilo. 22 Čovjeku, koji je čudesno ozdravljen, bilo je više od četrdeset godina.
Petar i Ivan vraćaju se vjernicima
23 Nakon što su Petar i Ivan pušteni, vratili su se svojima. Izvijestili su ih o svemu što su im rekli vodeći svećenici i starješine. 24 Kad su vjernici to čuli, svi su se jednodušno obratili Bogu i rekli: »Gospodaru, ti si stvorio nebo, Zemlju, more i sve što je u njima. 25 Ti si po svome Svetom Duhu govorio kroz usta svoga sluge, a našega praoca Davida:
‘Zašto su se narodi razbjesnili
i zašto uzalud smišljaju urotu?
26 Podigli su se zemaljski kraljevi i udružili se vladari
protiv Gospodina i njegovog Pomazanika.’[d]
27 Da, Herod i Poncije Pilat zaista su se udružili u ovom gradu s nežidovima i izraelskim narodom protiv tvoga svetog sluge Isusa, kojega si odabrao da bude Mesija. 28 Udružili su se da učine sve ono što si ti, po svojoj odluci i svojom vlašću, unaprijed odredio da se dogodi. 29 A sada, Gospodine, čuj njihove prijetnje i osposobi svoje sluge da neustrašivo pronose tvoju riječ. 30 Pokaži svoju silu[e]—neka ozdravljaju bolesni i neka se vlašću[f] tvoga svetog sluge Isusa čine čuda i znaci.«
31 Kad su završili molitvu, potreslo se mjesto na kojem su se bili okupili. Svi su se ispunili Svetim Duhom i počeli hrabro navješćivati Božju poruku.
Vjernici su ujedinjeni
32 Svi su vjernici bili jedno srce i jedna duša. Nitko nije govorio da je nešto što posjeduje samo njegovo, već su međusobno dijelili sve što su imali. 33 A apostoli su silno svjedočili o uskrsnuću Gospodina Isusa. Bog ih je sve obilno blagoslovio. 34 Nikome od njih ništa nije nedostajalo. Tko god je posjedovao zemlju ili kuće, prodavao ih je i donosio dobiveni novac. 35 Novac su predavali apostolima, a on se zatim dijelio svakome prema njegovim potrebama.
36 Jedan od vjernika zvao se Josip. Bio je levit, rodom Cipranin. Apostoli su ga zvali Barnaba—što znači »hrabritelj«. 37 On je posjedovao polje i prodao ga, a novac predao apostolima.

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard(A) and the Sadducees(B) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.(C) 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail(D) until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew(E) to about five thousand.
5 The next day the rulers,(F) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,(G) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,(H) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!(I) 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame(J) and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(K) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,(L) that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”(N)
13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John(O) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,(P) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.(Q) 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin(R) and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?”(S) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,(T) and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.(U) 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?(V) You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking(W) about what we have seen and heard.”(X)
21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people(Y) were praising God(Z) for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
The Believers Pray
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.(AA) “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.(AB) 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:(AC)
“‘Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord
and against his anointed one.[b]’[c](AD)
27 Indeed Herod(AE) and Pontius Pilate(AF) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,(AG) whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.(AH) 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.(AI) 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders(AJ) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”(AK)
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.(AL) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit(AM) and spoke the word of God(AN) boldly.(AO)
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(AP) 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify(AQ) to the resurrection(AR) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace(AS) was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(AT) brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet,(AU) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(AV)
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas(AW) (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.(AX)

Peter and John Before the Council
4 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and (A)the captain of the temple and (B)the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming (C)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and (D)put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and (E)the number of the men came to about five thousand.
5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with (F)Annas the high priest and (G)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, (H)“By what power or (I)by what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, (J)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today (K)concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that (L)by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, (M)whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 (N)This Jesus[a] is the stone that was (O)rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b] 12 And there is (P)salvation (Q)in no one else, for (R)there is no other (S)name under heaven given among men[c] by which we must be saved.”
13 (T)Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healed (U)standing beside them, (V)they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, (W)“What shall we do with these men? For that (X)a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them (Y)to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, (Z)“Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for (AA)we cannot but speak of what (AB)we have seen and heard.” 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, (AC)because of the people, for all were praising God (AD)for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.
The Believers Pray for Boldness
23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices (AE)together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, (AF)who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant,[d] said by the Holy Spirit,
(AG)“‘Why did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and (AH)the rulers were gathered together,
against the Lord and against his (AI)Anointed’[e]—
27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your (AJ)holy servant Jesus, (AK)whom you anointed, both (AL)Herod and (AM)Pontius Pilate, along (AN)with the Gentiles and (AO)the peoples of Israel, 28 (AP)to do whatever your hand and (AQ)your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, (AR)look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all (AS)boldness, 30 while (AT)you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed (AU)through the name of your (AV)holy servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, (AW)the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and (AX)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and (AY)continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
They Had Everything in Common
32 Now the full number of those who believed were of (AZ)one heart and (BA)soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but (BB)they had everything in common. 33 And with great (BC)power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and (BD)great grace was upon them all. 34 (BE)There was not a needy person among them, for (BF)as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold 35 and (BG)laid it at the apostles' feet, and (BH)it was distributed to each as any had need. 36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means (BI)son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, 37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and (BJ)laid it at the apostles' feet.
