Israel Provoked Yahweh
9 “Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess (A)nations greater and mightier than you, great cities [a](B)fortified to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘(C)Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ 3 So you shall know today that (D)it is Yahweh your God who is crossing over before you as (E)a consuming fire. He will destroy them, and He will subdue them before you, so that (F)you may dispossess them and make them perish quickly, just as Yahweh has spoken to you.
4 “(G)Do not say in your heart when Yahweh your God has driven them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land,’ but it is (H)because of the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh is dispossessing them before you. 5 It is (I)not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh your God is dispossessing them before you, in order to confirm (J)the [b]oath which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
6 “So you shall know it is not because of your righteousness that Yahweh your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are (K)a [c]stiff-necked people. 7 Remember, do not forget how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness; (L)from the day that you went out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. 8 Even (M)at Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you. 9 When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which Yahweh had cut with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and nights; (N)I neither ate bread nor drank water. 10 And Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone (O)written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which Yahweh had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 Now it happened (P)at the end of forty days and nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 (Q)Then Yahweh said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have (R)quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made a molten image for themselves.’ 13 (S)Yahweh spoke further to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, [d]they are a [e](T)stiff-necked people. 14 (U)Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and (V)blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and more numerous than they.’
15 “(W)So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I saw that you had indeed sinned against Yahweh your God. You had made for yourselves a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way which Yahweh had commanded you. 17 And I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands and shattered them before your eyes. 18 (X)And I fell down before Yahweh, (Y)as at the first, forty days and nights; (Z)I neither ate bread nor drank water (AA)because of all your sin which you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of Yahweh to provoke Him to anger. 19 For (AB)I was afraid of the anger and the wrath with which Yahweh was provoked against you in order to destroy you, (AC)but Yahweh listened to me that time also. 20 And Yahweh was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21 (AD)Now I took your [f]sinful thing, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that came down from the mountain.
22 “Again at (AE)Taberah and at (AF)Massah and at (AG)Kibroth-hattaavah you provoked Yahweh to wrath. 23 When Yahweh sent you from (AH)Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘(AI)Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the [g]command of Yahweh your God; (AJ)you did not believe Him, and you did not listen to His voice. 24 (AK)You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day I knew you.
25 “(AL)So I fell down before Yahweh the forty days and the forty nights, which I [h]did because Yahweh had said He would destroy you. 26 (AM)And I prayed to Yahweh and said, ‘O Lord Yahweh, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a strong hand. 27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look at the stiff-neck of this people or at their wickedness or their sin, 28 lest the land from which You brought us say, “(AN)Because Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land which He had [i]promised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.” 29 Yet they are Your people, even (AO)Your inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your (AP)great power and Your outstretched arm.’

9 »Oye, Israel: Hoy vas a pasar el Jordán para entrar a desposeer a naciones más grandes y más poderosas que tú(A), ciudades grandes y fortificadas hasta el cielo(B), 2 un pueblo grande y alto, los hijos de los anaceos, a quienes conoces y de quienes has oído decir: “¿Quién puede resistir ante los hijos de Anac(C)?”. 3 Comprende, pues, hoy, que es el Señor tu Dios(D) el que pasa delante de ti como fuego consumidor(E). Él los destruirá y los humillará delante de ti, para que los expulses[a] y los destruyas rápidamente(F), tal como el Señor te ha dicho.
4 »No digas en tu corazón cuando el Señor tu Dios los haya echado de delante de ti[b]: “Por mi justicia el Señor me ha hecho entrar para poseer esta tierra(G)”, sino que es a causa de la maldad de estas naciones que el Señor las expulsa[c] de delante de ti(H). 5 No es por tu justicia(I) ni por la rectitud de tu corazón que vas a poseer su tierra, sino que por la maldad de estas naciones el Señor tu Dios las expulsa[d] de delante de ti, para confirmar el pacto[e] que el Señor juró a tus padres(J) Abraham, Isaac y Jacob. 6 Comprende, pues, que no es por tu justicia que el Señor tu Dios te da esta buena tierra para poseerla, pues eres un pueblo terco[f](K).

7 »Acuérdate; no olvides cómo provocaste a ira al Señor tu Dios en el desierto; desde el día en que saliste de la tierra de Egipto hasta que ustedes llegaron a este lugar, han sido rebeldes contra el Señor(L). 8 Hasta en Horeb provocaron a ira al Señor, y el Señor se enojó tanto contra ustedes que estuvo a punto de destruirlos(M). 9 Cuando subí al monte para recibir las tablas de piedra, las tablas del pacto que el Señor había hecho con ustedes, me quedé en el monte cuarenta días y cuarenta noches; no comí pan ni bebí agua(N). 10 El Señor me dio las dos tablas de piedra escritas por el dedo de Dios(O); y en ellas estaban todas las palabras que el Señor les había dicho en el monte, de en medio del fuego, el día de la asamblea.
11 »Y aconteció después de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, que el Señor me dio las dos tablas de piedra, las tablas del pacto(P). 12 Entonces el Señor me dijo: “Levántate; baja aprisa de aquí, porque tu pueblo que sacaste de Egipto se ha corrompido(Q). Pronto se han apartado del camino que Yo les había ordenado; se han hecho un ídolo de fundición(R)”. 13 También el Señor me habló(S) y dijo: “He visto a este pueblo, y en verdad es un pueblo terco(T). 14 Déjame que los destruya(U) y borre su nombre de debajo del cielo(V); y de ti haré una nación más grande y más poderosa que ellos”. 15 Y volví, y descendí del monte mientras el monte ardía en fuego, y las dos tablas del pacto estaban en mis dos manos(W). 16 Y vi que en verdad ustedes habían pecado contra el Señor su Dios. Se habían hecho un becerro de fundición; pronto se habían apartado del camino que el Señor les había ordenado. 17 Tomé las dos tablas, las arrojé de mis manos y las hice pedazos delante de ustedes.
18 »Entonces me postré delante del Señor como al principio, por cuarenta días y cuarenta noches(X); no comí pan ni bebí agua(Y), a causa de todo el pecado que habían cometido al hacer lo malo ante los ojos del Señor, provocando así Su ira(Z). 19 Porque temí la ira(AA) y el furor con que el Señor estaba enojado contra ustedes para destruirlos, pero el Señor me escuchó también esta vez(AB). 20 El Señor se enojó tanto con Aarón que quiso destruirlo; y también intercedí por Aarón al mismo tiempo. 21 Y tomé el objeto del pecado de ustedes, el becerro que se habían hecho, y lo quemé en el fuego, y lo hice pedazos, desmenuzándolo hasta que quedó tan fino como el polvo; y eché su polvo al arroyo que bajaba del monte(AC).
22 »Nuevamente, en Tabera(AD), en Masah(AE) y en Kibrot Hataava(AF), provocaron a ira al Señor. 23 Y cuando el Señor los envió de Cades Barnea(AG), diciendo: “Suban y tomen posesión de la tierra que Yo les he dado(AH)”, entonces se rebelaron contra la orden[g] del Señor su Dios; no le creyeron, ni escucharon Su voz(AI). 24 Ustedes han sido rebeldes al Señor desde el día en que los conocí(AJ).

25 »Entonces me postré delante del Señor los cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, lo cual hice[h](AK) porque el Señor había dicho que los iba a destruir. 26 Oré al Señor, y dije: “Oh Señor Dios[i], no destruyas a Tu pueblo, a Tu heredad, que Tú has redimido con Tu grandeza, que Tú has sacado de Egipto con mano fuerte(AL). 27 Acuérdate de Tus siervos Abraham, Isaac y Jacob; no mires la dureza de este pueblo ni su maldad ni su pecado. 28 De otra manera los de la tierra de donde Tú nos sacaste dirán: ‘Por cuanto el Señor no pudo hacerlos entrar en la tierra que les había prometido[j] y porque los aborreció, los sacó para hacerlos morir en el desierto(AM)’. 29 Sin embargo, ellos son Tu pueblo, Tu heredad(AN), a quien Tú has sacado con Tu gran poder y Tu brazo extendido(AO)”.

9 Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven,
2 A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!
3 Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord hath said unto thee.
4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee.
5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
6 Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the Lord thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the Lord.
8 Also in Horeb ye provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord was angry with you to have destroyed you.
9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:
10 And the Lord delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the Lord spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.
12 And the Lord said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.
13 Furthermore the Lord spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.
15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.
16 And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.
17 And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes.
18 And I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.
19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the Lord was wroth against you to destroy you. But the Lord hearkened unto me at that time also.
20 And the Lord was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time.
21 And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount.
22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah, ye provoked the Lord to wrath.
23 Likewise when the Lord sent you from Kadeshbarnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice.
24 Ye have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.
25 Thus I fell down before the Lord forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the Lord had said he would destroy you.
26 I prayed therefore unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.
27 Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:
28 Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.
29 Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.
