Deuteronomy 8:5-20
New International Version
5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.(A)
6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him(B) and revering him.(C) 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land(D)—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;(E) 8 a land with wheat and barley,(F) vines(G) and fig trees,(H) pomegranates, olive oil and honey;(I) 9 a land where bread(J) will not be scarce and you will lack nothing;(K) a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.(L)
10 When you have eaten and are satisfied,(M) praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget(N) the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,(O) 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget(P) the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness,(Q) that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes(R) and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.(S) 16 He gave you manna(T) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,(U) to humble and test(V) you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself,(W) “My power and the strength of my hands(X) have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,(Y) and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
19 If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods(Z) and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.(AA) 20 Like the nations(AB) the Lord destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the Lord your God.(AC)
Hebrews 12:5-11
New International Version
5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart(A) when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,(B)
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a](C)
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children.(D) For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline(E)—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits(F) and live!(G) 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.(H) 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace(I) for those who have been trained by it.
