²⁵ The images of their gods you are to burn^(A) in the fire. Do not covet^(B) the silver and gold on them, and do not take it for yourselves, or you will be ensnared^(C) by it, for it is detestable^(D) to the Lord your God.

³ Break down their altars, smash^(A) their sacred stones and burn^(B) their Asherah^(C) poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names^(D) from those places.

Achan’s Sin

7 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things^[a];^(A) Achan^(B) son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,^[b] the son of Zerah,^(C) of the tribe of Judah,^(D) took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned^(E) against Israel.^(F)

⁶ He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the Lord to the Kidron Valley^(A) outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder^(B) and scattered the dust over the graves^(C) of the common people.^(D)

¹² The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn^(A) them in the fire.^(B)
