Atonement for an Unsolved Murder

21 If someone is found slain, lying in a field in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who the killer was,^(A)

⁹ If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.”

³⁵ I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized^(A) it by its hair, struck it and killed it.

²⁷ When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan.^[a] Jehu chased him, shouting, “Kill him too!” They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam,^(A) but he escaped to Megiddo^(B) and died there.

²⁵ As soon as Jehu had finished making the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and officers: “Go in and kill^(A) them; let no one escape.”^(B) So they cut them down with the sword. The guards and officers threw the bodies out and then entered the inner shrine of the temple of Baal.
