¹¹ And if it responds to you peaceably and it opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall do forced labor for you and shall serve you.

¹⁴ But ^(A)his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’

^21 (A)their descendants who were left after them in the land, ^(B)whom the people of Israel were unable to devote to destruction^[a]—^(C)these Solomon drafted to be ^(D)slaves, and so they are to this day. ²² But ^(E)of the people of Israel Solomon made no slaves. They were the soldiers, they were his officials, his commanders, his captains, his chariot commanders and his horsemen.

³⁰ Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of ^(A)Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.

^31 (B)Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, ³² so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

³³ Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of ^(C)Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.

^34 (D)The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. ³⁵ The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, ^(E)in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor.

²⁸ When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.

¹⁰ However, ^(A)they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived in the midst of Ephraim to this day but have been made ^(B)to do forced labor.

¹⁹ There was not a city that made peace with the people of Israel except ^(A)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took them all in battle. ²⁰ For it was the Lord's doing ^(B)to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, ^(C)just as the Lord commanded Moses.

²⁷ But Joshua made them that day ^(A)cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the Lord, to this day, ^(B)in the place that he should choose.

²² Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, “Why did you deceive us, saying, ^(A)‘We are very far from you,’ when ^(B)you dwell among us? ²³ Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall never be anything but servants, ^(C)cutters of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.”
