3 Il re Nebukadnetsar fece costruire un'immagine d'oro, alta sessanta cubiti, e larga sei cubiti, e la fece erigere nella pianura di Dura, nella provincia di Babilonia.

2 Poi il re Nebukadnetsar mandò a radunare i satrapi, i prefetti, i governatori, i giudici, i tesorieri, i consiglieri di stato gli esperti nella legge e tutte le autorità delle province, perché venissero alla inaugurazione dell'immagine che il re Nebukadnetsar aveva fatto erigere.

3 Allora i satrapi, i prefetti e i governatori, i giudici, i tesorieri, i consiglieri di stato, gli esperti della legge e tutte le autorità delle province si radunarono insieme per la inaugurazione dell'immagine, fatta erigere dal re Nebukadnetsar, e si misero in piedi davanti all'immagine che Nebukadnetsar aveva fatto erigere.

4 Quindi l'araldo gridò a gran voce: «A voi, popoli, nazioni e lingue è ordinato che,

5 appena udrete il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, della lira, del salterio della zampogna e di ogni genere di strumenti, vi prostriate per adorare l'immagine d'oro che il re Nebukadnetsar ha fatto erigere;

6 chiunque non si prostrerà per adorare, sarà subito gettato in mezzo a una fornace di fuoco ardente».

7 Cosí, non appena tutti i popoli udirono il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, della lira, del salterio e di ogni genere di strumenti, tutti i popoli, nazioni e lingue si prostrarono e adorarono l'immagine d'oro, che il re Nebukadnetsar aveva fatto erigere.

8 Per questa ragione in quel momento, alcuni Caldei si fecero avanti e accusarono i Giudei;

9 prendendo la parola dissero al re Nebukadnetsar: «O re, possa tu vivere per sempre!

10 Tu, o re, hai emanato un decreto, in forza del quale chiunque ha udito il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra, della lira, del salterio, della zampogna e di ogni genere di strumenti deve prostrarsi per adorare l'immagine d'oro;

11 e chiunque non si prostra e non adora, deve essere gettato in mezzo a una fornace di fuoco ardente.

12 Or ci sono alcuni Giudei che hai preposto all'amministrazione degli affari della provincia di Babilonia, Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego, che non prestano alcuna considerazione a te, non servono i tuoi dèi e non adorano l'immagine d'oro che hai fatto erigere».

13 Allora Nebukadnetsar, adirato e furibondo, comandò di far venire Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego, cosí questi uomini furono condotti davanti al re.

14 Nebukadnetsar rivolse loro la parola, dicendo: «Shadrak, Meshak e Abednego, è vero che non servite i miei dèi e non adorate l'immagine d'oro che io ho fatto erigere?

15 Ora, non appena udrete il suono del corno, del flauto, della cetra della lira del salterio, della zampogna e di ogni genere di strumenti, se siete pronti a prostrarvi per adorare l'immagine che io ho fatto, bene; ma se non l'adorate, sarete subito gettati in mezzo a una fornace di fuoco ardente; e qual è quel dio che potrà liberarvi dalle mie mani?».

16 Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego risposero al re, dicendo: «O Nebukadnetsar, noi non abbiamo bisogno di darti risposta in merito a questo.

17 Ecco, il nostro Dio, che serviamo, è in grado di liberarci dalla fornace di fuoco ardente e ci libererà dalla tua mano, o re.

18 Ma anche se non lo facesse, sappi o re, che non serviremo i tuoi dèi e non adoreremo l'immagine d'oro che tu hai fatto erigere».

19 Allora Nebukadnetsar fu ripieno di furore e l'espressione del suo volto mutò nei riguardi di Shadrak, Meshak e Abednego. Riprendendo la parola comandò di riscaldare la fornace sette volte piú di quanto si soleva riscaldarla.

20 Comandò quindi ad alcuni uomini forti e valorosi del suo esercito di legare Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego e di gettarli nella fornace di fuoco ardente.

21 Allora questi tre uomini furono legati con i loro calzoni, le loro tuniche, i loro copricapo e tutte le loro vesti e furono gettati in mezzo alla fornace di fuoco ardente.

22 Ma poiché l'ordine del re era duro e la fornace era estremamente surriscaldata, la fiamma del fuoco uccise gli uomini che vi avevano gettato Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego.

23 E questi tre uomini, Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego, caddero legati in mezzo alla fornace di fuoco ardente.

24 Allora il re Nebukadnetsar, sbalordito, si alzò in fretta e prese a dire ai suoi consiglieri: «Non abbiamo gettato tre uomini legati in mezzo al fuoco?». Essi risposero e dissero al re: «Certo, o re».

25 Egli riprese a dire: «Ecco, io vedo quattro uomini slegati, che camminano in mezzo al fuoco, senza subire alcun danno; e l'aspetto del quarto è simile a quello di un figlio di Dio».

26 Poi Nebukadnetsar si avvicinò all'apertura della fornace di fuoco ardente e prese a dire: «Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego, servi del Dio Altissimo, uscite e venite qui». Allora Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego uscirono di mezzo al fuoco.

27 Quindi i satrapi, i prefetti, i governatori e i consiglieri del re si radunarono per osservare quegli uomini: il fuoco non aveva avuto alcun potere sul loro corpo, i capelli del loro capo non erano stati bruciati, i loro mantelli non erano stati alterati e neppure l'odore di fuoco si era posato su di loro.

28 Nebukadnetsar prese a dire: «Benedetto sia il Dio di Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego, che ha mandato il suo angelo e ha liberato i suoi servi, che hanno confidato in lui; hanno trasgredito l'ordine del re e hanno esposto i loro corpi alla morte, piuttosto che servire e adorare altro dio all'infuori del loro.

29 Perciò io decreto che chiunque, a qualsiasi popolo, nazione o lingua appartenga, dirà male del Dio di Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego, sia tagliato a pezzi e la sua casa sia ridotta in un letamaio, perché non c'è nessun altro dio che possa salvare a questo modo».

30 Allora il re fece prosperare Shadrak, Meshak e Abed-nego nella provincia di Babilonia.

3 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. 2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the [a]judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the [b]sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 3 Then the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the [c]judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the [d]sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4 Then the herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, [e]dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up; 6 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 7 Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

8 Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against the Jews. 9 They answered and said to Nebuchadnezzar the king, O king, live for ever. 10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image; 11 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said unto them, Is it of purpose, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, that ye serve not my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? 15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made, well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands? 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, [f]we have no need to answer thee in this matter. 17 [g]If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thy hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

19 Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was wont to be heated. 20 And he commanded certain mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their hosen, their [h]tunics, and their mantles, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 22 Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste: he spake and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the aspect of the fourth is like a son of the gods. 26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the [i]mouth of the burning fiery furnace: he spake and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came forth out of the midst of the fire. 27 And the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power upon their bodies, nor was the hair of their head singed, neither were their hosen changed, nor had the smell of fire passed on them.

28 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. 29 Therefore I make a decree, that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill; because there is no other god that is able to deliver after this sort. 30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon.

The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace

3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image(A) of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps,(B) prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials(C) to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.

4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language,(D) this is what you are commanded to do: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,(E) pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image(F) of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.(G) 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”(H)

7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.(I)

8 At this time some astrologers[b](J) came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever!(K) 10 Your Majesty has issued a decree(L) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold,(M) 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(N)—who pay no attention(O) to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”(P)

13 Furious(Q) with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods(R) or worship the image(S) of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god(T) will be able to rescue(U) you from my hand?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(V) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(W) us from it, and he will deliver(X) us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(Y)”

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(Z) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(AA) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(AB) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”

25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(AC) come out! Come here!”

So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(AD) crowded around them.(AE) They saw that the fire(AF) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(AG) and rescued(AH) his servants! They trusted(AI) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(AJ) 29 Therefore I decree(AK) that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,(AL) for no other god can save(AM) in this way.”

30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(AN)

Nebuchadnezzar’s Gold Statue

3 King Nebuchadnezzar made a gold statue,(A) 90 feet high and nine feet wide.[a] He set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.(B) 2 King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to assemble the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the rulers(C) of the provinces to attend the dedication of the statue King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates, and all the rulers of the provinces assembled for the dedication of the statue the king had set up. Then they stood before the statue Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

4 A herald loudly proclaimed, “People of every nation and language, you are commanded: 5 When you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither,[b] lyre,[c] harp, drum,[d] and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship(D) the gold statue that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 But whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a furnace of blazing fire.”(E)

7 Therefore, when all the people heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, and every kind of music, people of every nation and language fell down and worshiped the gold statue that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

The Furnace of Blazing Fire

8 Some Chaldeans took this occasion to come forward and maliciously accuse[e](F) the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever. 10 You as king have issued a decree(G) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, drum, and every kind of music must fall down and worship the gold statue. 11 Whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a furnace of blazing fire. 12 There are some Jews you have appointed to manage the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.(H) These men have ignored you,(I) the king; they do not serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”

13 Then in a furious rage(J) Nebuchadnezzar gave orders to bring in Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar asked them, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is it true that you don’t serve my gods or worship the gold statue(K) I have set up? 15 Now if you’re ready, when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, drum, and every kind of music, fall down and worship the statue I made. But if you don’t worship it, you will immediately be thrown into a furnace of blazing fire—and who is the god who can rescue you from my power?”(L)

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, “Nebuchadnezzar, we don’t need to give you an answer to this question. 17 If the God we serve exists,[f] then He can rescue(M) us from the furnace of blazing fire, and He can rescue us from the power of you, the king. 18 But even if He does not rescue us,[g] we want you as king to know that we will not serve(N) your gods(O) or worship the gold statue you set up.”

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage,(P) and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He gave orders to heat the furnace seven times more than was customary, 20 and he commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and throw them into the furnace of blazing fire. 21 So these men, in their trousers, robes, head coverings,[h] and other clothes, were tied up and thrown into the furnace of blazing fire. 22 Since the king’s command was so urgent[i](Q) and the furnace extremely hot, the raging flames[j] killed those men who carried Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego up. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego fell, bound, into the furnace of blazing fire.

Delivered from the Fire

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in alarm.(R) He said to his advisers, “Didn’t we throw three men, bound, into the fire?”

“Yes, of course, Your Majesty,” they replied to the king.

25 He exclaimed, “Look! I see four men, not tied, walking around in the fire unharmed;(S) and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”[k](T)

26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the door of the furnace of blazing fire and called: “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, you servants of the Most High God—come out!” So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire.(U) 27 When the satraps, prefects, governors, and the king’s advisers gathered around, they saw that the fire had no effect(V) on[l] the bodies of these men: not a hair of their heads was singed, their robes were unaffected, and there was no smell of fire on them. 28 Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed, “Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent His angel[m](W) and rescued His servants who trusted in Him.(X) They violated the king’s command and risked their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(Y) 29 Therefore I issue a decree(Z) that anyone of any people, nation, or language who says anything offensive against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego will be torn limb from limb and his house made a garbage dump.(AA) For there is no other god who is able to deliver like this.” 30 Then the king rewarded Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(AB)
