3 Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa cho làm một pho tượng bằng vàng, cao ba mươi mét và rộng ba mét.[a] Ông dựng pho tượng ấy lên trong đồng bằng Ðu-ra, trong tỉnh Ba-by-lôn. 2 Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa truyền triệu tập các thống đốc, các tỉnh trưởng, các tổng trấn, các mưu sĩ, các tổng giám đốc ngân khố, các thẩm phán, các chánh án, và tất cả các quan chức trong các tỉnh đến để dự lễ khánh thành pho tượng Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa đã dựng lên.
3 Vậy các thống đốc, các tỉnh trưởng, các tổng trấn, các mưu sĩ, các tổng giám đốc ngân khố, các thẩm phán, các chánh án, và tất cả các quan chức trong các tỉnh đều tề tựu đông đủ để tham dự lễ khánh thành pho tượng Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa đã dựng lên, và họ đều đứng trước pho tượng Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa đã dựng lên. 4 Bấy giờ vị quan điều khiển buổi lễ hô to, “Ðây là lịnh truyền cho các ngươi phải làm, hỡi tất cả các dân, các nước, và các ngữ tộc: 5 Hễ khi nào các ngươi nghe tiếng kèn, tiếng sáo, tiếng hạc cầm, tiếng đàn lia, tiếng trống, và mọi thứ nhạc khí khác cùng trỗi lên, các ngươi phải sấp mình xuống và thờ lạy pho tượng vàng Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa đã dựng lên. 6 Kẻ nào không sấp mình xuống thờ lạy pho tượng vàng sẽ lập tức bị quăng vào giữa lò lửa hừng.”
7 Vì thế khi mọi người nghe tiếng kèn, tiếng sáo, tiếng hạc cầm, tiếng đàn lia, cùng với mọi thứ nhạc khí khác trỗi lên, mọi dân, mọi nước, và mọi ngữ tộc có mặt lúc đó đều sấp mình xuống và thờ lạy pho tượng vàng Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa đã dựng lên.
8 Khi ấy có mấy chiêm tinh gia người Canh-đê bước đến tố cáo những người Giu-đa. 9 Họ tâu với Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa, “Tâu hoàng thượng, chúc hoàng thượng sống vạn tuế. 10 Tâu hoàng thượng, hoàng thượng đã ban một sắc lịnh rằng bất cứ người nào khi nghe tiếng kèn, tiếng sáo, tiếng hạc cầm, tiếng đàn lia, tiếng trống, và mọi thứ nhạc khí khác cùng trỗi lên thì phải sấp mình xuống và thờ lạy pho tượng vàng. 11 Còn kẻ nào không sấp mình xuống thờ lạy pho tượng ấy sẽ lập tức bị quăng vào giữa lò lửa hừng. 12 Thế nhưng có mấy người Giu-đa hoàng thượng đã lập lên làm quan điều hành công việc trong tỉnh Ba-by-lôn là Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô, tâu hoàng thượng, mấy người ấy chẳng coi lịnh của hoàng thượng ra gì. Họ chẳng phục vụ các thần của hoàng thượng hay thờ lạy pho tượng vàng hoàng thượng đã dựng lên.”
13 Bấy giờ Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa đùng đùng nổi giận. Ông truyền đem Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô đến ngay. Vậy họ dẫn những người ấy đến trước mặt vua. 14 Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa hỏi họ, “Hỡi Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô, có thật là các ngươi không phục vụ các thần của ta, hay không thờ lạy pho tượng vàng ta đã dựng lên chăng? 15 Bây giờ các ngươi khá sẵn sàng, hễ khi các ngươi nghe tiếng kèn, tiếng sáo, tiếng hạc cầm, tiếng đàn lia, tiếng trống, và mọi thứ nhạc khí khác cùng trỗi lên, nếu các ngươi sấp mình xuống và thờ lạy pho tượng vàng ta đã làm thì tốt. Nhưng nếu các ngươi không thờ lạy, các ngươi sẽ lập tức bị quăng vào giữa lò lửa hừng. Rồi để xem thần nào có thể cứu các ngươi khỏi tay ta chăng?”
16 Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô trả lời với vua, “Tâu Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa, về việc nầy chúng thần không cần phải binh vực cho chúng thần trước mặt hoàng thượng đâu. 17 Nếu hoàng thượng nhất định quăng chúng thần vào giữa lò lửa hừng thì Ðức Chúa Trời chúng thần thờ phượng sẽ giải cứu chúng thần khỏi lò lửa ấy, và Ngài sẽ giải cứu chúng thần khỏi tay hoàng thượng, tâu hoàng thượng. 18 Nhưng nếu Ngài không giải cứu chúng thần, thì tâu hoàng thượng, chúng thần xin hoàng thượng biết rằng chúng thần sẽ không phục vụ các thần của hoàng thượng hay thờ lạy pho tượng vàng mà hoàng thượng đã dựng lên đâu.”
Lò Lửa Hừng
19 Bấy giờ Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa cực kỳ tức giận. Da mặt ông đổi màu nghịch lại Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô. Ông truyền lịnh đốt lò lửa nóng gấp bảy lần mức bình thường. 20 đoạn ông truyền cho các dũng sĩ lực lưỡng nhất trong quân đội của ông trói Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô lại, rồi ném họ vào lò lửa đang cháy hừng hực. 21 Vậy những người ấy bị trói lại và bị quăng vào giữa lò lửa hực. Họ vẫn còn mặc áo choàng, quần dài, khăn trùm đầu, và quần áo lót bên trong. 22 Số là lịnh vua truyền quá cấp bách, và lò lửa lại nóng gấp nhiều lần hơn mức bình thường, nên các dũng sĩ có nhiệm vụ quăng Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô vào lò lửa đã bị ngọn lửa quá nóng làm chết. 23 Còn ba người đó, Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô, tay chân bị trói chặt, đã rơi vào giữa lò lửa hực.
24 Bấy giờ Vua Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa lấy làm cực kỳ kinh ngạc và bật đứng dậy. Ông hỏi các mưu sĩ của ông, “Chẳng phải chúng ta đã trói ba người và quăng vào lò lửa hay sao?”
Họ đáp với ông, “Tâu hoàng thượng, đúng vậy.”
25 Ông nói, “Hãy nhìn kìa! Ta thấy bốn người không bị trói đang đi giữa lò lửa, và họ chẳng bị hại gì; và hình dáng của người thứ tư giống như Con của Ðức Chúa Trời.[b]”
26 Bấy giờ Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa đến gần miệng lò lửa đang cháy hừng hực và kêu lớn, “Hỡi Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô, các đầy tớ của Ðức Chúa Trời Tối Cao, hãy đi ra, và hãy đến đây.” Vậy Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô bước ra khỏi lò lửa. 27 Khi ấy các thống đốc, các tỉnh trưởng, các tổng trấn, và các mưu sĩ của vua tụ lại quanh ba người ấy; họ thấy lửa không làm hại gì đến thân thể ba người ấy. Không sợi tóc nào trên đầu họ bị cháy sém, quần áo họ không bị một chút hư hại gì, và mùi lửa cũng không ngửi thấy trên người họ.
28 Bấy giờ Nê-bu-cát-nê-xa nói, “Nguyện sự chúc tụng thuộc về Ðức Chúa Trời của Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô, Ðấng đã sai thiên sứ của Ngài đến giải cứu các đầy tớ Ngài, những người tin cậy Ngài. Họ đã bất tuân lịnh vua, và thà chịu chết hơn là thờ phượng bất cứ thần nào khác ngoại trừ Ðức Chúa Trời của họ. 29 Vì thế ta truyền lịnh rằng bất cứ dân nào, nước nào, hay ngữ tộc nào nói điều gì xúc phạm đến Ðức Chúa Trời của Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô sẽ bị phân thây ra từng mảnh, và nhà của chúng sẽ bị biến thành một đống tro, vì không thần nào khác có thể giải cứu được như thế nầy.” 30 Sau đó vua thăng chức cho Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sách, và A-bết-nê-gô trong tỉnh Ba-by-lôn.

The Image of Gold
3 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was [a]sixty cubits and its width six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. 2 And King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to gather together the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 3 So the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered together for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4 Then a herald cried [b]aloud: “To you it is commanded, (A)O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up; 6 and whoever does not fall down and worship shall (B)be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.”
7 So at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the horn, flute, harp, and lyre, in symphony with all kinds of music, all the people, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the gold image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
Daniel’s Friends Disobey the King
8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans (C)came forward and accused the Jews. 9 They spoke and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, (D)“O king, live forever! 10 You, O king, have made a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the gold image; 11 and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 12 (E)There are certain Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; these men, O king, have (F)not paid due regard to you. They do not serve your gods or worship the gold image which you have set up.”
13 Then Nebuchadnezzar, in (G)rage and fury, gave the command to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. So they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the gold image which I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, and you fall down and worship the image which I have made, (H)good! But if you do not worship, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. (I)And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, (J)we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our (K)God whom we serve is able to (L)deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we (M)worship the gold image which you have set up.”
Saved in Fiery Trial
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. He spoke and commanded that they heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he commanded certain mighty men of valor who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 22 Therefore, because the king’s command was [c]urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his [d]counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?”
They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.”
25 “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, (N)walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like (O)the[e] Son of God.”
Nebuchadnezzar Praises God
26 Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the [f]mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the (P)Most High God, come out, and come here.” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire. 27 And the satraps, administrators, governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together, and they saw these men (Q)on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.
28 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His (R)Angel[g] and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God! 29 (S)Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the (T)God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be (U)cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; (V)because there is no other God who can deliver like this.”
30 Then the king [h]promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego in the province of Babylon.

3 O Rei Nabucodonosor fez uma estátua de ouro, cuja altura era de sessenta côvados, e a sua largura, de seis côvados; levantou-a no campo de Dura, na província de Babilônia. 2 E o rei Nabucodonosor mandou ajuntar os sátrapas, os prefeitos, os presidentes, os juízes, os tesoureiros, os conselheiros, os oficiais e todos os governadores das províncias, para que viessem à consagração da estátua que o rei Nabucodonosor tinha levantado. 3 Então, se ajuntaram os sátrapas, os prefeitos, os presidentes, os juízes, os tesoureiros, os conselheiros, os oficiais e todos os governadores das províncias, para a consagração da estátua que o rei Nabucodonosor tinha levantado, e estavam em pé diante da imagem que Nabucodonosor tinha levantado. 4 E o arauto apregoava em alta voz: Ordena-se a vós, ó povos, nações e gente de todas as línguas: 5 Quando ouvirdes o som da buzina, do pífaro, da harpa, da sambuca, do saltério, da gaita de foles e de toda sorte de música, vos prostrareis e adorareis a imagem de ouro que o rei Nabucodonosor tem levantado. 6 E qualquer que se não prostrar e não a adorar será na mesma hora lançado dentro do forno de fogo ardente. 7 Portanto, no mesmo instante em que todos os povos ouviram o som da buzina, do pífaro, da harpa, da sambuca, do saltério e de toda sorte de música, se prostraram todos os povos, nações e línguas e adoraram a estátua de ouro que o rei Nabucodonosor tinha levantado.
8 Ora, no mesmo instante, se chegaram alguns homens caldeus e acusaram os judeus. 9 E falaram e disseram ao rei Nabucodonosor: Ó rei, vive eternamente! 10 Tu, ó rei, fizeste um decreto, pelo qual todo homem que ouvisse o som da buzina, do pífaro, da harpa, da sambuca, do saltério, da gaita de foles e de toda sorte de música se prostraria e adoraria a estátua de ouro; 11 e qualquer que se não prostrasse e adorasse seria lançado dentro do forno de fogo ardente. 12 Há uns homens judeus, que tu constituíste sobre os negócios da província de Babilônia: Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego; esses homens, ó rei, não fizeram caso de ti; a teus deuses não servem, nem a estátua de ouro, que levantaste, adoraram.
13 Então, Nabucodonosor, com ira e furor, mandou chamar Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego. E trouxeram a esses homens perante o rei. 14 Falou Nabucodonosor e lhes disse: É de propósito, ó Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego, que vós não servis a meus deuses nem adorais a estátua de ouro que levantei? 15 Agora, pois, se estais prontos, quando ouvirdes o som da buzina, do pífaro, da cítara, da harpa, do saltério, da gaita de foles e de toda sorte de música, para vos prostrardes e adorardes a estátua que fiz, bom é; mas, se a não adorardes, sereis lançados, na mesma hora, dentro do forno de fogo ardente; e quem é o Deus que vos poderá livrar das minhas mãos? 16 Responderam Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego e disseram ao rei Nabucodonosor: Não necessitamos de te responder sobre este negócio. 17 Eis que o nosso Deus, a quem nós servimos, é que nos pode livrar; ele nos livrará do forno de fogo ardente e da tua mão, ó rei. 18 E, se não, fica sabendo, ó rei, que não serviremos a teus deuses nem adoraremos a estátua de ouro que levantaste.
19 Então, Nabucodonosor se encheu de furor, e se mudou o aspecto do seu semblante contra Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego; falou e ordenou que o forno se aquecesse sete vezes mais do que se costumava aquecer. 20 E ordenou aos homens mais fortes que estavam no seu exército que atassem a Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego, para os lançarem no forno de fogo ardente. 21 Então, aqueles homens foram atados com as suas capas, e seus calções, e seus chapéus, e suas vestes e foram lançados dentro do forno de fogo ardente. 22 E, porque a palavra do rei apertava, e o forno estava sobremaneira quente, a chama do fogo matou aqueles homens que levantaram a Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego. 23 E estes três homens, Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego, caíram atados dentro do forno de fogo ardente.
24 Então, o rei Nabucodonosor se espantou e se levantou depressa; falou e disse aos seus capitães: Não lançamos nós três homens atados dentro do fogo? Responderam e disseram ao rei: É verdade, ó rei. 25 Respondeu e disse: Eu, porém, vejo quatro homens soltos, que andam passeando dentro do fogo, e nada há de lesão neles; e o aspecto do quarto é semelhante ao filho dos deuses. 26 Então, se chegou Nabucodonosor à porta do forno de fogo ardente; falou e disse: Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego, servos do Deus Altíssimo, saí e vinde! Então, Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego saíram do meio do fogo. 27 E ajuntaram-se os sátrapas, e os prefeitos, e os presidentes, e os capitães do rei, contemplando estes homens, e viram que o fogo não tinha tido poder algum sobre os seus corpos; nem um só cabelo da sua cabeça se tinha queimado, nem as suas capas se mudaram, nem cheiro de fogo tinha passado sobre eles.
28 Falou Nabucodonosor e disse: Bendito seja o Deus de Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego, que enviou o seu anjo e livrou os seus servos, que confiaram nele, pois não quiseram cumprir a palavra do rei, preferindo entregar os seus corpos, para que não servissem nem adorassem algum outro deus, senão o seu Deus. 29 Por mim, pois, é feito um decreto, pelo qual todo povo, nação e língua que disser blasfêmia contra o Deus de Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego seja despedaçado, e as suas casas sejam feitas um monturo; porquanto não há outro deus que possa livrar como este. 30 Então, o rei fez prosperar a Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego, na província de Babilônia.
