Amos 2
New Catholic Bible
Chapter 2
For Three Crimes of Moab
1 Thus says the Lord:
For three crimes of Moab, and for four,
I will not revoke my decree.
Because they incinerated to ashes
the bones of the king of Edom,[a]
2 I will send down fire on Moab
to devour the palaces of Kerioth.
Moab will perish amid the uproar,
amid war cries and the sound of trumpets.
3 I will destroy its rulers
and slaughter all of his officials with him.
For Three Crimes of Judah
4 Thus says the Lord:
For three crimes of Judah, and for four,
I will not revoke my decree.
Because they have spurned the law of the Lord
and have not observed his statutes,
having been led astray
by the lies which their fathers followed,
5 I will send fire down on Judah
to devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
The Trial of Israel
For Three Crimes of Israel
6 Thus says the Lord:
For three crimes of Israel, and for four,
I will not revoke my decree.
They sell righteous people for silver
and the poor for a pair of sandals.
7 They have trampled the heads of the poor
into the dust of the earth
and thrust the lowly out of their way.
Father and son lie with the same prostitute,
profaning my holy name.
8 They lie down beside every altar
upon garments acquired as surety,[b]
while drinking in the house of their God
the wine purchased with the fines they impose.
9 Yet I was the one
who destroyed the Amorites[c] before them;
they were as tall as the cedars
and as strong as the oaks.
I was the one
who destroyed their fruit above
and their roots below.
10 I was the one
who brought you up from the land of Egypt
and for forty years led you through the desert
to take possession of the land of the Amorites.
11 I was the one
who raised up some of your sons to be prophets
and some of your young men to be Nazirites.
Is this not indeed true, O Israelites?
says the Lord.
12 But you forced the Nazirites to drink wine
and commanded the prophets, “Do not prophesy!”
13 Therefore, I will crush you
just as a cart crushes when it is fully laden.
14 The swift will be unable to take flight;
the strong man will not retain his strength,
and the warrior will be unable to save his life.
15 The archer will not stand his ground;
the swift of foot will not escape,
nor will the horseman save his life.
16 Even the bravest of warriors
will flee away naked on that day,
says the Lord.

2 Thus says Yahweh,
“For three transgressions of (A)Moab and for four
I will not turn back its punishment
Because he (B)burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.
2 So I will send fire upon Moab,
And it will consume the citadels of (C)Kerioth;
And Moab will die amid great (D)rumbling,
Amid a loud shout and the sound of a trumpet.
3 I will also cut off the [a](E)judge from her midst
And kill all her (F)princes with him,” says Yahweh.
Punishment of Judah and Israel
4 Thus says Yahweh,
“For three transgressions of (G)Judah and for four
I will not turn back its punishment
Because they (H)rejected the law of Yahweh
And have not kept His statutes;
Their [b](I)falsehood also has led them astray,
That which their (J)fathers walked after.
5 So I will (K)send fire upon Judah,
And it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”
6 Thus says Yahweh,
“For three transgressions of (L)Israel and for four
I will not turn back its punishment
Because they (M)sell the righteous for money
And the needy for a pair of sandals.
7 These who [c]pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the (N)poor
Also (O)turn aside the way of the humble;
And a (P)man and his father go to the same [d]young woman
In order to profane My holy name.
8 On garments (Q)taken as pledges they stretch out beside (R)every altar,
And in the house of their God they (S)drink the wine of those who have been fined.
9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the (T)Amorite before them,
[e]Though his (U)height was like the height of cedars,
And he was strong as the oaks;
I even destroyed his (V)fruit above and his root below.
10 And it was I who (W)brought you up from the land of Egypt,
And I led you in the wilderness (X)forty years
[f]That you might take possession of the land of the (Y)Amorite.
11 Then I (Z)raised up some of your sons to be prophets
And some of your choice men to be (AA)Nazirites.
Is this not so, O sons of Israel?” declares Yahweh.
12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine,
And you commanded the prophets saying, ‘You (AB)shall not prophesy!’
13 Behold, I am [g](AC)weighted down beneath you
As a wagon [h]is weighted down when filled with sheaves.
14 (AD)So [i]flight will perish from the swift,
And the strong will not instill his power with courage,
Nor will the (AE)mighty man make his [j]life escape.
15 He who (AF)grasps the bow will not stand his ground,
The swift of foot will not escape,
Nor will he who rides the (AG)horse make his [k]life escape.
16 Even the [l]most courageous of heart among the mighty men will (AH)flee naked in that day,” declares Yahweh.
