바나바와 사울, 특별한 사명을 받다
13 안디옥교회에는 몇 사람의 예언자와 교사들이 있었다. 그들은 바나바와, 니게르라고 하는 시므온과, 구레네 사람 루기오와, 분봉왕[a] 헤롯과 함께 자란 마나엔과, 사울이었다. 2 그들이 주께 예배드리며 금식하고 있을 때에, 성령께서 말씀하셨다. “나를 위해서 바나바와 사울을 따로 세워라. 내가 그들에게 맡길 일이 있어서 그들을 불렀다.”
3 그들은 금식과 기도를 마치고 두 사람에게 손을 얹은[b] 다음, 두 사람을 떠나보냈다.
바나바와 사울, 키프로스에 가다
4 두 사람은, 이렇게 성령의 보내심을 받아 실루기아로 내려간 다음, 그곳에서 배를 타고 키프로스로 갔다. 5 그들은 살라미에 이르러, 그곳에 있는 유대 사람의 회당을 두루 찾아다니며 하나님의 말씀을 널리 알렸다. 요한은 그들을 따라다니며 돕는 일을 하였다.
6 그들이 온 섬을 돌다가 바보라는 곳에 이르러, 마술을 부리는 거짓 예언자를 만났다. 그는 바예수라는 유대 사람이었다. 7 그는 총독 서기오 바울이 늘 곁에 두는 사람이었다. 총독은 똑똑한 사람이어서, 바나바와 사울을 불러다가 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 싶어하였다. 8 그런데 엘루마라고 하는 그 마술사는 사울과 바나바를 반대하였다. 엘루마는 바예수라는 이름을 그리스 말로 번역한 이름이다. 그는 총독으로 하여금 믿지 못하게 하려고 애를 썼다. 9 그러자 바울이라고 하는 사울이 성령으로 가득 차서, 엘루마를 노려보고 10 말하였다. “너는 악마의 자식이고 모든 정의의 원수이다. 너는 온갖 사기와 속임수로 가득 차 있다. 네가 주의 곧은 길을 굽게 만드는 짓을 그만두지 못하겠느냐? 11 이제 주의 손이 너를 내리치실 것이니, 네가 눈이 멀어 한동안 햇빛을 보지 못할 것이다.”
그러자 곧 안개와 어둠이 그를 뒤덮었다. 그는 여기저기를 더듬거리며 자기 손을 잡아 이끌어 줄 사람을 찾았다. 12 총독은 그 일을 보고 주를 믿었다. 그는 주에 관한 가르침에 크게 감동을 받았다.
바울과 바나바, 비시디아 안디옥으로 가다
13 바울과 그 일행은 바보에서 배를 타고 밤빌리아에 있는 버가로 갔다. 그러나 요한은 일행을 떠나 예루살렘으로 돌아갔다. 14 일행은 다시 버가를 떠나 비시디아에 있는 안디옥에 닿았다. 그들은 안식일에 회당에 들어가 앉았다. 15 율법서와 예언서를 큰 소리로 읽고 난 다음, 회당의 지도자들이 사람을 보내어 바울과 바나바에게 다음과 같이 청하였다. “두 분 형제께서 여기 모인 사람들에게 들려주고 싶은 격려의 말씀이 있으시면 들려주십시오.”
16 그리하여 바울이 일어나 손을 들어 보이고[c] 나서 말하였다. “이스라엘 형제 여러분, 그리고 하나님을 경배하는 이방인 여러분, 제 말을 들어 주십시오. 17 이스라엘 백성의 하나님께서는 우리 조상을 택하셨습니다. 이 민족이 이집트 땅에서 나그네로 머무는 동안에 그들을 큰 민족으로 키워 주시고, 크신 능력으로 그들을 그 나라에서 이끌어 내셨습니다. 18 광야에서는 사십 년 동안 그들이 저지른 온갖 잘못도 참아 주셨습니다. 19 그리고 가나안 땅의 일곱 민족을 멸하시고, 그들의 땅을 당신의 백성에게 유산으로 주셨습니다. 20 이 모든 일이 약 사백오십 년에 걸쳐서 일어났습니다.
그런 다음 하나님께서는 예언자 사무엘의 시대에 이르기까지 그들에게 사사들을 보내 주셨습니다. 21 그들이 왕을 세워 달라고 하자, 하나님께서는 베냐민 가문 사람인 기스의 아들 사울을 주셨고, 사울은 사십 년 동안 다스렸습니다. 22 그런 뒤에 사울을 물러나게 하시고 다윗을 그들의 왕으로 세우셨습니다. 하나님께서는 다윗을 두고 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. ‘나는 내가 마음에 두었던 이새의 아들 다윗을 찾아냈다. 그는 내가 그에게 바라는 일을 할 것이다.’ 23 하나님께서는 약속하신 대로 이 다윗의 자손 가운데서 구주[d]를 세워 이스라엘에게 보내셨으니, 그가 곧 예수이십니다. 24 예수께서 오시기 전에 요한[e]은 온 이스라엘 백성에게 회개하고 세례를 받으라고 선포하였습니다. 25 요한은 자기의 사명을 마치면서 이렇게 말하였습니다. ‘너희는 나를 누구라고 생각하느냐? 나는 그리스도가 아니다. 그분은 내 뒤에 오실 터인데, 나는 그분의 신발 끈을 풀어 드릴 자격도 없다.’
26 형제 여러분, 아브라함의 자손 여러분, 그리고 하나님을 두려워하는 이방인 여러분! 이러한 구원의 소식이 우리에게 전해졌습니다. 27 예루살렘에 사는 사람들과 그들의 지도자들은 그분을 사형에 처해야 한다고 정죄함으로써 예언자들의 말을 그대로 이루었습니다. 그분을 알아보지 못하였고, 안식일마다 읽는 예언자들의 말을 깨닫지도 못하였기 때문입니다. 28 그들은 예수를 죽일 만한 아무런 구실도 찾지 못하였으나, 빌라도를 졸라서 그분을 죽이게 하였습니다. 29 그들은 성경에 예수께 일어나리라고 쓰여 있는 일들을 다 저질렀습니다. 그런 다음 그분을 십자가에서 내려 무덤에 두었습니다. 30 그러나 하나님께서는 그분을 다시 살리셨으며, 31 그분은 갈릴리에서 예루살렘으로 함께 올라갔던 사람들에게 여러 날 동안 나타나셨습니다. 이 사람들은 지금 백성들에게 그분에 대한 증인이 되었습니다. 32 우리는 여러분에게 기쁜 소식을 전합니다. 곧 하나님께서 우리 조상과 맺으셨던 약속을, 33 그 조상의 자손인 우리를 위해서 예수를 죽음에서 일으킴으로써 이루어 주셨다는 것입니다. 이 일을 두고 시편 둘째 편에 이렇게 쓰여 있습니다.
‘너는 내 아들, 오늘 내가 너를 낳았다.’(A)
34 하나님께서 그분을 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살리시고, 다시는 썩지 않게 하셨습니다. 하나님께서는 이 사실을 두고 미리 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다.
‘나는
다윗에게 약속했던 거룩하고 확실한 복을
너희에게 주겠다.’(B)
35 성경의 또 다른 곳에서는 이렇게 말씀하고 있습니다.
‘당신께서는
당신의 거룩한 이를
썩도록 버려 두지 않으실 것입니다.’(C)
36 다윗은 사는 동안 하나님의 뜻을 받들어 섬기다가 잠들었습니다. 그는 조상들과 함께 묻혔고, 그의 몸은 썩고 말았습니다. 37 그러나 하나님께서 죽음에서 일으키신 이는 썩지 않으셨습니다. 38 그러므로 형제 여러분, 이것을 아시기 바랍니다. 곧 그분을 통하여 죄를 용서받을 수 있다는 소식이 선포되었다는 것입니다. 39 모세의 율법을 통해서는 여러분이 결코 죄에서 풀려날 수 없었습니다. 그러나 이제는 누구든지 그분을 믿는 사람은, 그분을 통하여 모든 죄에서 풀려날 수 있습니다. 40 예언자들이 한 말이 여러분에게 일어나지 않도록 조심하십시오. 41 그들이 이렇게 말하였습니다.
‘보라, 너희 비웃는 자들아
너희는 놀라며 망해 버려라.
내가 너희 시대에 한 가지 일을 할 터인데
그 일을 누가 너희에게 말하여 줄지라도
너희는 도무지 믿지 않을 것이기 때문이다.’”(D)
42 두 사람이 회당을 떠날 때에, 사람들은 다음 안식일에도 그 일에 관하여 더 이야기해 달라고 부탁하였다. 43 회당의 모임이 끝난 뒤에, 많은 유대 사람과 유대교로 개종[f]한 경건한 이방 사람들이 바울과 바나바를 따랐다. 두 사람은 그들과 이야기를 나누며, 믿음을 굳게 지켜 계속하여 하나님의 은혜를 누리며 살라고 권고하였다.
44 다음 안식일에는 도시의 거의 대부분 사람이 주의 말씀을 들으려고 모였다. 45 유대 사람들은 모여든 사람들을 보고 시샘이 북받쳐서 바울이 하는 말을 반대하며 욕설을 퍼부었다. 46 그러나 바울과 바나바는 거침없이 말하였다. “우리는 하나님의 말씀을 가장 먼저 여러분에게 전해야 했습니다. 그러나 여러분은 그 말씀을 거부하고, 자신들을 영원한 생명을 얻을 자격이 있는 사람들로 여기지 않고 있습니다. 그러므로 우리는 이제 이방 사람[g]에게 갑니다. 47 주께서 우리에게 이렇게 명하셨기 때문입니다.
‘나는 너를 이방 사람의 빛으로 삼았다.
그것은, 네가 땅 끝까지
구원의 빛을 비추게 하려는 것이다.’”(E)
48 이방 사람들은 이 말을 듣고 기뻐하며 주의 말씀을 찬양하였다. 그리고 영원한 생명을 얻도록 정해진 사람들은 모두 주를 믿었다.
49 주의 말씀이 그 지방에 두루 퍼져나갔다. 50 그러나 유대 사람들은, 이방 사람으로서 하나님을 섬기는 그 도시의 귀부인들과 지도자들을 부추겨서, 바울과 바나바를 박해하기 시작하였다. 그리고 두 사람을 자기네 지방에서 내쫓았다. 51 두 사람은 그들에게 항의하는 뜻에서 발에 묻은 먼지를 떨어 버리고[h] 이고니온으로 갔다. 52 비시디아 지방의 안디옥에서 새로 예수의 제자가 된 사람들은 기쁨과 성령으로 가득 차 있었다.
바울과 바나바, 이고니온에 가다
14 이고니온에서도, 바울과 바나바는 늘 하던 대로 유대 사람의 회당에 들어가 말씀을 전하였다. 그들이 어찌나 말씀을 잘 전하였던지 많은 유대 사람과 이방 사람들이 믿었다. 2 그러나 믿기를 거부하는 유대 사람들은 이방 사람들을 부추겨서 믿는 이들을 미워하게 하였다. 3 그리하여 두 사람은 꽤 긴 시간을 그곳에 머물면서 주를 위해 담대하게 말하였다. 주께서는 두 사람을 통해서 표적과 놀라운 일들이 일어나게 해 주심으로써, 두 사람이 전하는 당신의 은혜의 말씀을 확증해 주셨다. 4 그 도시의 사람들은 두 패로 나뉘어, 더러는 유대 사람들의 편을 들고, 더러는 사도들의 편을 들었다.
5 그런데 이방 사람들과 유대 사람들이 그들의 지도자들과 더불어, 바울과 바나바를 괴롭히고 돌로 쳐 죽이려는 계획을 세우고 있었다. 6 두 사람이 그 낌새를 알고는 루가오니아 지방에 있는 두 도시 루스드라와 더베와 그 가까이로 피하였다. 7 두 사람은 그곳에서 계속 기쁜 소식을 전하였다.
바울, 루스드라와 더베에 가다
8 루스드라에는 발을 쓰지 못하는 사람이 하나 앉아 있었다. 그는 태어나서 한 번도 걸어본 적이 없는 사람이었다. 9 그 사람이 바울의 말을 귀 기울여 들었다. 바울은 그 사람을 똑바로 보고서, 그에게 고침 받을 만한 믿음이 있는 것을 알았다. 10 바울이 큰 소리로 말하였다. “당신의 발로 일어서시오!” 그러자 그 사람이 벌떡 일어나 걷기 시작하였다. 11 사람들은 바울이 한 일을 보고 루가오니아 말로 “신들이 사람의 모습을 하고 우리에게 내려왔다!” 하고 소리질렀다. 12 그들은 바나바를 제우스[i]라고 부르고, 바울을 헤르메스[j]라고 불렀다. 바울이 주로 설교를 맡아 하였기 때문이다. 13 바로 그 성 바깥에 제우스 신전이 있었다. 그 신전의 제사장이 황소 몇 마리와 꽃을 엮어 만든 목걸이를 성문으로 가져왔다. 제사장과 사람들은 두 사람에게 그것들을 제물로 바치려고 하였다.
14 바나바와 바울 두 사도는 이 이야기를 듣고, 옷을 찢으며 사람들 속으로 달려가 이렇게 소리쳤다. 15 “여러분, 어찌하여 이런 짓을 하십니까? 우리도 여러분과 같은 사람일 뿐입니다. 우리는 여러분에게 기쁜 소식을 전하고, 쓸데없는 우상을 섬기는 짓들을 그만두고 살아 계신 하나님께 돌아오라는 말을 하려고 이곳에 왔습니다. 하나님은 하늘과 땅과 바다와, 그 안에 있는 모든 것들을 만드신 분입니다. 16 지나간 세대에는 하나님께서 모든 민족이 자기들 나름으로 살아가도록 내버려 두셨습니다. 17 그러나 당신이 계시다는 증거를 보여 주지 않은 채로 여러분을 내버려 두셨던 것은 아닙니다. 하나님께서는 여러분을 위해 좋은 일들을 해 주셨습니다. 곧 하늘에서 비를 내려 주시고, 철을 따라 열매를 맺게 하십니다. 그리고 여러분에게 먹을 것을 넉넉하게 주시고, 여러분의 마음을 기쁨으로 채워 주십니다.” 18 두 사람은 이렇게 말하면서 사람들을 겨우 말려서 자기들에게 제사를 드리지 못하게 하였다.
19 그러자 안디옥과 이고니온에서 온 몇몇 유대 사람들이 모인 사람들을 꼬드기어 자기들 편으로 만들었다. 그들은 바울을 돌로 친 다음, 그가 죽은 줄로 알고 성 바깥으로 끌어냈다. 20 그러나 제자들이 달려와 둘러섰을 때에 바울은 깨어 일어나 성 안으로 들어갔다. 이튿날 바울은 바나바와 함께 더베로 떠났다.
바울과 바나바, 시리아의 안디옥으로 돌아오다
21 두 사람은 더베에서 기쁜 소식을 전하고 많은 제자를 얻은 뒤에, 다시 루스드라와 이고니온과 안디옥으로 돌아갔다. 22 그곳에서 두 사람은 제자들의 용기를 북돋아 주고, 계속하여 믿음을 지키라고 격려하면서 “우리가 하나님 나라에 들어가려면 많은 어려움을 이겨야 합니다.” 하고 말하였다. 23 그리고 그들을 위해서 각 교회마다 장로들을 세운 다음, 기도하고 금식하면서 자신들이 믿는 주께 그 장로들을 맡겼다.
24 두 사람은 비시디아를 지나 밤빌리아로 갔다. 25 그리고 버가에서 말씀을 전한 뒤에 앗달리아로 내려갔다. 26 그들은 그곳에서 다시 배를 타고 시리아에 있는 안디옥으로 갔다. 안디옥은, 믿는 이들이 그들을 하나님의 손에 맡기며 말씀을 전하라고 내보냈던 곳이다. 이제 그들은 그 일을 다 마치고 돌아온 것이다.
27 두 사람은 안디옥에 도착하여 온 교회의 믿는 이들을 모아 놓고, 하나님께서 자기들과 함께하신 일들을 들려주었다. 그리고 하나님께서 이방 사람[k]에게도 믿음의 문을 열어 주셨다는 것을 알렸다. 28 두 사람은 제자들과 함께 오랫동안 머물렀다.

13 1 Now in the church at Antioch(A) there were prophets(B) and teachers:(C) Barnabas,(D) Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,(E) Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod(F) the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,(G) “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work(H) to which I have called them.”(I) 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them(J) and sent them off.(K)
On Cyprus
4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit,(L) went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.(M) 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God(N) in the Jewish synagogues.(O) John(P) was with them as their helper.
6 They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer(Q) and false prophet(R) named Bar-Jesus, 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul,(S) Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer(T) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul(U) from the faith.(V) 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit,(W) looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 “You are a child of the devil(X) and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?(Y) 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you.(Z) You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.”(AA)
Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul(AB) saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.
In Pisidian Antioch
13 From Paphos,(AC) Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia,(AD) where John(AE) left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.(AF) On the Sabbath(AG) they entered the synagogue(AH) and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law(AI) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”
16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand(AJ) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;(AK) 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct[a](AL) in the wilderness;(AM) 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,(AN) giving their land to his people(AO) as their inheritance.(AP) 20 All this took about 450 years.
“After this, God gave them judges(AQ) until the time of Samuel the prophet.(AR) 21 Then the people asked for a king,(AS) and he gave them Saul(AT) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,(AU) who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,(AV) he made David their king.(AW) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;(AX) he will do everything I want him to do.’(AY)
23 “From this man’s descendants(AZ) God has brought to Israel the Savior(BA) Jesus,(BB) as he promised.(BC) 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.(BD) 25 As John was completing his work,(BE) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.(BF) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’(BG)
26 “Fellow children of Abraham(BH) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation(BI) has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,(BJ) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets(BK) that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.(BL) 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him,(BM) they took him down from the cross(BN) and laid him in a tomb.(BO) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(BP) 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.(BQ) They are now his witnesses(BR) to our people.
32 “We tell you the good news:(BS) What God promised our ancestors(BT) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(BU) As it is written in the second Psalm:
34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,
35 So it is also stated elsewhere:
36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(BY) he was buried with his ancestors(BZ) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(CA) did not see decay.
38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(CB) 39 Through him everyone who believes(CC) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(CD) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:
41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
that you would never believe,
even if someone told you.’[e]”(CE)
42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue,(CF) the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.(CG)
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying(CH) and heaped abuse(CI) on him.
46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.(CJ) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.(CK) 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:
“‘I have made you[f] a light for the Gentiles,(CL)
that you[g] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’[h]”(CM)
48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;(CN) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.
49 The word of the Lord(CO) spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.(CP) 51 So they shook the dust off their feet(CQ) as a warning to them and went to Iconium.(CR) 52 And the disciples(CS) were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.(CT)

14 At Iconium(CU) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.(CV) There they spoke so effectively that a great number(CW) of Jews and Greeks believed. 2 But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(CX) 3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly(CY) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.(CZ) 4 The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.(DA) 5 There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,(DB) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.(DC) 6 But they found out about it and fled(DD) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, 7 where they continued to preach(DE) the gospel.(DF)
In Lystra and Derbe
8 In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth(DG) and had never walked. 9 He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed(DH) 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”(DI) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.(DJ)
11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(DK) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.(DL) 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.
14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes(DM) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,(DN) like you. We are bringing you good news,(DO) telling you to turn from these worthless things(DP) to the living God,(DQ) who made the heavens and the earth(DR) and the sea and everything in them.(DS) 16 In the past, he let(DT) all nations go their own way.(DU) 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony:(DV) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;(DW) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(DX) 18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.
19 Then some Jews(DY) came from Antioch and Iconium(DZ) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul(EA) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples(EB) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
The Return to Antioch in Syria
21 They preached the gospel(EC) in that city and won a large number(ED) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium(EE) and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.(EF) “We must go through many hardships(EG) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders[i](EH) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,(EI) committed them to the Lord,(EJ) in whom they had put their trust. 24 After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia,(EK) 25 and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
26 From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch,(EL) where they had been committed to the grace of God(EM) for the work they had now completed.(EN) 27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them(EO) and how he had opened a door(EP) of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.(EQ)
