Ananias and Sapphira Lie to the Holy Spirit

5 Now a certain man named[a] Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and he kept back for himself some of the proceeds, and his[b] wife was aware of it.[c] And he brought a certain part and[d] placed it[e] at the feet of the apostles. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, for what reason has Satan filled your heart, that you lied to the Holy Spirit and kept back for yourself some of the proceeds of the piece of land? 4 When it[f] remained to you, did it not remain yours? And when it[g] was sold, was it at your disposal? How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to people, but to God!”

5 And when[h] Ananias heard these words, he fell down and[i] died. And great fear came on all those who heard about it.[j] 6 So the young men stood up, wrapped him up, and carried him[k] out and[l] buried him.[m] 7 And it happened that there was an interval of about three hours, and his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you both[n] were paid this much for the piece of land.” And she said, “Yes, this much.” 9 So Peter said to her, “How is it that it was agreed by you two[o] to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!” 10 And immediately she fell down at his feet and died. So when[p] the young men came in, they found her dead, and carried her[q] out and[r] buried her[s] with her husband. 11 And great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard about these things.

Many Signs and Wonders Are Performed by the Apostles

12 Now many signs and wonders were being performed among the people through the hands of the apostles. And they were all together[t] in Solomon’s Portico. 13 And none of the rest dared to join them, but the people spoke highly of them. 14 And even more believers in the Lord[u] were being added, large numbers of both men and women, 15 so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and put them[v] on cots and mats[w] so that when[x] Peter came by, at least his[y] shadow would fall on some of them. 16 And the people of the towns around Jerusalem also came together, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, who were all being healed.

The Apostles Arrested and Imprisoned

17 Now the high priest rose up and all those who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and[z] they were filled with jealousy. 18 And they laid hands on the apostles and put them in the public prison. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison and led them out and[aa] said, 20 “Go and stand in the temple courts[ab] and[ac] proclaim to the people all the words of this life.” 21 And when they[ad] heard this,[ae] they entered at daybreak into the temple courts[af] and began teaching.[ag]

Now when[ah] the high priest and those with him arrived, they summoned the Sanhedrin—even the whole council of elders of the sons of Israel—and sent to the prison to have them brought. 22 But the officers who came[ai] did not find them in the prison, and they returned and[aj] reported, 23 saying, “We found the prison locked with all security and the guards standing at the doors, but when we[ak] opened them,[al] we found no one inside!” 24 Now when both the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed concerning them, as to what this might be. 25 But someone came and[am] reported to them, “Behold, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple courts[an] and teaching the people!” 26 Then the captain went with the officers and[ao] brought them, not with force (for they were afraid of the people, lest they be stoned by them).[ap]

The Apostles on Trial Before the Sanhedrin

27 And when they[aq] had brought them, they made them[ar] stand in the Sanhedrin,[as] and the high priest put a question to them, 28 saying, “We strictly commanded[at] you[au] not to teach in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching! And you are intending to bring upon us the blood of this man!” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered and[av] said, “It is necessary to obey God rather than men! 30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you killed by[aw] hanging him[ax] on a tree. 31 This one God has exalted to his right hand as Leader and Savior to grant repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32 And we are witnesses of these things, and so is[ay] the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.” 33 Now when[az] they heard this,[ba] they were infuriated, and were wanting to execute them. 34 But a certain man stood up in the Sanhedrin,[bb] a Pharisee named[bc] Gamaliel, a teacher of the law respected by all the people, and[bd] gave orders to put the men outside for a short time. 35 And he said to them, “Men and Israelites, take care for yourselves what you are about to do to these men! 36 For before these days, Theudas rose up saying he was somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him.[be] He[bf] was executed, and all who followed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and caused people to follow him in revolt.[bg] And that one perished, and all who followed him were scattered. 38 And now I tell you, keep away from these men, and leave them alone, because if this plan or this matter is from people, it will be overthrown.[bh] 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them, lest you even be found fighting against God.” So they were persuaded by him. 40 And they summoned the apostles, beat them,[bi] commanded them[bj] not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.[bk] 41 So they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin[bl] rejoicing, because they had been considered worthy to be dishonored for the sake of the name. 42 Every day, both in the temple courts[bm] and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that the Christ[bn] was Jesus.

5  Egy ember azonban, névszerint Anániás, Safirával, az õ feleségével, eladá birtokát.

2 És félre tõn az árából, feleségének is tudtával, és valami részét elvivén, az apostoloknak lábai elé letevé.

3 Monda pedig Péter: Anániás, miért foglalta el a Sátán a te szívedet, hogy megcsald a Szent Lelket, és a mezõnek árából félre tégy?

4 Nemde megmaradva néked maradt volna meg, és eladva a te hatalmadban volt? Miért hogy ezt a dolgot cselekedted szívedben? Nem embereknek hazudtál, hanem Istennek.

5 Hallván pedig Anániás e szavakat, lerogyott és meghala; és mindenekben nagy félelem támada, kik ezeket hallják vala.

6 Az ifjak pedig felkelvén, begöngyölék õt, és kivivén eltemeték.

7 Történt aztán mintegy három órai szünet múlva, hogy az õ felesége, nem tudva, mi történt, beméne.

8 Monda pedig néki Péter: Mondd meg nékem, vajjon ennyiért adtátok-é el a földet? Õ pedig monda: Igen, ennyiért.

9 Péter pedig monda néki: Miért hogy megegyeztetek, hogy az Úrnak lelkét megkísértsétek? Ímé a küszöbön vannak azoknak lábaik, a kik eltemették férjedet, és kivisznek téged.

10 És azonnal összerogyott lábainál, és meghala; bemenvén pedig az ifjak, halva találák õt, és kivivén eltemeték férje mellé.

11 És támada nagy félelem az egész gyülekezetben és mindazokban, kik ezeket hallják vala.

12 Az apostolok kezei által pedig sok jel és csoda lõn a nép között; és egyakarattal mindnyájan a Salamon tornáczában valának.

13 Egyebek közül pedig senki sem mert közéjük elegyedni: hanem a nép magasztalá õket;

14 Hívõk pedig mindinkább csatlakoztak az Úrhoz, úgy férfiaknak, mint asszonyoknak sokasága.

15 Úgyannyira, hogy az utczákra hozák ki a betegeket, és letevék ágyakon és nyoszolyákon, hogy az arra menõ Péternek csak árnyéka is érje valamelyiket közülök,

16 És a szomszéd városok sokasága is Jeruzsálembe gyûlt, hozva betegeket és tisztátalan lelkektõl gyötretteket: kik mind meggyógyulának.

17 De felkelvén a fõpap és mind a kik vele valának, azaz a sadduczeusok felekezete, betelének irigységgel,

18 És ráveték kezöket az apostolokra, és a közönséges tömlöczbe tevék õket.

19 Hanem az Úrnak angyala éjszaka megnyitá a tömlöcz ajtaját, és kihozván õket, monda:

20 Menjetek el, és felállván, hirdessétek a templomban a népnek ez életnek minden beszédit!

21 Azok pedig [ezt] hallván, bemenének jó reggel a templomba, és tanítának. A fõpap pedig elmenvén és a vele levõk, egybehívák a gyûlést, és Izráel fiainak egész tanácsát, és küldének a tömlöczbe, hogy azokat elõhozzák.

22 Mikor azonban a poroszlók oda mentek, nem találák õket a tömlöczben; visszatérvén tehát, megjelenték,

23 Mondván: A tömlöczöt ugyan nagy erõsen bezárva találtuk, és az õröket kívül az ajtó elõtt állva; mikor azonban kinyitottuk, ott benn senkit sem találánk.

24 A mint pedig hallották e szavakat a pap és a templom felügyelõje és a fõpapok, zavarban voltak azok miatt, mi lehet ez?

25 Eljövén pedig valaki, hírül adá nékik, mondván: Ímé, ama férfiak, kiket a tömlöczbe vetettetek, a templomban állanak és tanítják a népet.

26 Akkor elmenvén a felügyelõ a poroszlókkal, elõhozá õket erõszak nélkül; féltek ugyanis a néptõl, hogy megkövezi õket.

27 Elõhozván pedig õket, állaták a tanács elé; és megkérdé õket a fõpap,

28 Mondván: Nem megparancsoltuk-é néktek parancsolattal, hogy ne tanítsatok ebben a névben? És ímé betöltöttétek Jeruzsálemet tudományotokkal, és mi reánk akarjátok hárítani annak az embernek vérét.

29 Felelvén pedig Péter és az apostolok, mondának: Istennek kell inkább engedni, hogynem az embereknek.

30 A mi atyáinknak Istene feltámasztotta Jézust, kit ti fára függesztve megölétek.

31 Ezt az Isten fejedelemmé és megtartóvá emelte jobbjával, hogy adjon az Izráelnek bûnbánatot és bûnöknek bocsánatát.

32 És mi vagyunk néki bizonyságai ezen beszédek felõl, és a Szent Lélek is, kit Isten adott azoknak, a kik néki engednek.

33 Azok pedig ezeket hallván, fogukat csikorgaták, és arról tanácskozának, hogy megölik õket.

34 Felkelvén azonban a tanácsban egy farizeus, névszerint Gamáliel, az egész nép elõtt tisztelt törvénytudó, parancsolá, hogy egy kis idõre vezessék ki az apostolokat.

35 És monda azoknak: Izráel férfiai, vigyázzatok magatokra ez emberekkel szemben, mit akartok cselekedni!

36 Mert ez idõnek elõtte felkelt Theudás, azt mondván, hogy õ valaki, kihez mintegy négyszáz embernyi tömeg csatlakozott; õ megöletett, és mindnyájan, a kik csak követték õt, eloszlottak és semmivé lettek.

37 Ezután felkelt ama Galileus Júdás az összeírás idején, és sok népet maga után csábított: ez is elveszett; és mindazok, a kik õt követték, szétszórattak.

38 Mostanra nézve is mondom néktek, álljatok el ez emberektõl, és hagyjatok békét nékik: mert ha emberektõl van e tanács, vagy e dolog, semmivé lesz;

39 Ha pedig Istentõl van, ti fel nem bonthatjátok azt; nehogy esetleg Isten ellen harczolóknak is találtassatok.

40 Engedének azért néki; és miután elõszólították az apostolokat, megveretvén, megparancsolák, hogy a Jézus nevében ne szóljanak, és elbocsáták õket.

41 Õk annakokáért örömmel menének el a tanács elõl, hogy méltókká tétettek arra, hogy az õ nevéért gyalázattal illettessenek.

Ananias and Sapphira

5 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself,(A) but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.(B)

3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan(C) has so filled your heart(D) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit(E) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?(F) 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?(G) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”(H)

5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.(I) And great fear(J) seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,(K) and carried him out and buried him.

7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”(L)

9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?(M) Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died.(N) Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.(O) 11 Great fear(P) seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders(Q) among the people. And all the believers used to meet together(R) in Solomon’s Colonnade.(S) 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.(T) 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.(U) 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.(V) 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.(W)

The Apostles Persecuted

17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party(X) of the Sadducees,(Y) were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.(Z) 19 But during the night an angel(AA) of the Lord opened the doors of the jail(AB) and brought them out.(AC) 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”(AD)

21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates(AE) arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin(AF)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.(AG) So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests(AH) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people(AI) would stone them.

27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin(AJ) to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”(AK) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”(AL)

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!(AM) 30 The God of our ancestors(AN) raised Jesus from the dead(AO)—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.(AP) 31 God exalted him to his own right hand(AQ) as Prince and Savior(AR) that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.(AS) 32 We are witnesses of these things,(AT) and so is the Holy Spirit,(AU) whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 When they heard this, they were furious(AV) and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel,(AW) a teacher of the law,(AX) who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census(AY) and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.(AZ) 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”(BA)

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.(BB) Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing(BC) because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.(BD) 42 Day after day, in the temple courts(BE) and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news(BF) that Jesus is the Messiah.(BG)
