This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and desired to hear God’s message.(B) 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (this is the meaning of his name) opposed(C) them and tried to turn the proconsul away from the faith.(D)

6 And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:
7 Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.
8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

There they met a Jewish sorcerer(A) and false prophet(B) named Bar-Jesus, 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul,(C) Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer(D) (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul(E) from the faith.(F)
