² He had James, the brother of John,^(A) put to death with the sword.^(B)

³⁷ They were put to death by stoning;^[a](A) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.^(B) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,^(C) destitute, persecuted and mistreated—

²³ Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup,^(A) but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

²¹ Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.^(A) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, ²² and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.^(B)

³⁸ “You don’t know what you are asking,”^(A) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup^(B) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”^(C)

The Request of James and John^(A)

³⁵ Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

¹⁰ He replied, “I have been very zealous^(A) for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant,^(B) torn down your altars,^(C) and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,^(D) and now they are trying to kill me too.”

Elijah Flees to Horeb

19 Now Ahab told Jezebel^(A) everything Elijah had done and how he had killed^(B) all the prophets with the sword.

²³ They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword^(A) and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.)^(B)
