Bài ai ca cho Ít-ra-en
5 Hỡi Ít-ra-en hãy nghe bài ai ca ta hát về ngươi.
2 “Trinh nữ [a] Ít-ra-en đã ngã xuống,
sẽ không ngồi dậy nữa.
Nó còn lại trong xứ một mình,
không ai đỡ dậy.”
3 CHÚA phán như sau:
“Một ngàn người rời khỏi thành,
nhưng chỉ có một trăm người trở về.”
Chúa khuyên dân Ít-ra-en trở về với Ngài
4 Sau đây là lời CHÚA phán về dân [b] Ít-ra-en:
“Hãy trở lại cùng ta để được sống,
5 Đừng nhìn về Bê-tên,
hay đi đến Ghinh-ganh,
cũng đừng xuống Bê-e-sê-ba [c].
Dân Ghinh-ganh sẽ bị bắt làm tù binh [d],
Bê-tên sẽ không còn gì.”
6 Hãy đến cùng CHÚA để được sống,
nếu không Ngài sẽ ra tay
như lửa ào đến nhà Giô-xép [e].
Lửa sẽ thiêu đốt Bê-tên [f],
không ai dập tắt.
7 Ngươi làm đảo lộn công lý,
và ném lẽ phải xuống đất.
8 Thượng-Đế là Đấng tạo nên các chòm sao,
Sao Cày và Sao Rua [g];
Ngài biến đêm tối ra bình minh tươi sáng,
và biến ngày ra đêm tối.
Ngài gọi nước biển đến xối trên đất.
Danh Ngài là CHÚA.
9 Ngài giữ gìn thành lớn nầy,
Ngài để cho thành lớn kia bị tiêu diệt.
Những điều ác mà dân Ít-ra-en làm
Ngươi đổi điều thiện ra thuốc độc [h].
Ngươi diệt công lý, ném nó xuống đất.
10 Ngươi ghét những kẻ làm chứng trước toà nghịch lại điều ác,
Ngươi không chịu nổi kẻ nói sự thật.
11 Ngươi chà đạp kẻ nghèo,
bắt họ trao thóc gạo cho ngươi.
Ngươi xây nhà sang trọng bằng đá đẽo,
nhưng sẽ không được ở trong đó.
Ngươi trồng nhiều vườn nho xinh tốt,
nhưng sẽ không được uống rượu từ chúng.
12 Ngươi biết những tội ác mình,
những tội lỗi ghê gớm của mình.
Ngươi làm hại người làm lành,
và nhận tiền hối lộ để làm bậy,
Ngươi ngăn không cho kẻ nghèo có được công lý.
13 Trong khi đó kẻ khôn ngoan im lặng,
vì không phải lúc để nói.
14 Hãy làm lành, tránh ác để được sống,
thì CHÚA Toàn Năng sẽ ở cùng ngươi, như ngươi nói.
15 Hãy ghét điều ác, mến điều thiện;
hãy tỏ ra công bằng trước toà án.
Nguyện CHÚA là Thượng-Đế Toàn-Năng
tỏ lòng nhân từ cùng dân cư
còn sống sót của Giô-xép.
Thời kỳ sầu thảm sắp đến
16 Sau đây là lời CHÚA,
Thượng-Đế Toàn Năng phán:
“Người ta sẽ kêu khóc trong đường phố;
họ sẽ kêu lên nơi công cộng,
‘Ôi, còn nữa sao!’
Họ sẽ gọi các nông gia đến mà than khóc,
và thuê những kẻ khóc mướn [i].
17 Dân chúng sẽ than khóc về vườn nho,
vì ta sẽ đi qua giữa các ngươi
để trừng phạt các ngươi,” CHÚA phán vậy.
Ngày xét xử của Chúa
18 Khốn cho các ngươi là kẻ
mong ngày phán xử của CHÚA đến.
Sao các ngươi mong ngày ấy đến làm gì?
Nó sẽ mang bóng tối đến,
không phải ánh sáng đâu.
19 Ngày đó sẽ giống như kẻ chạy trốn khỏi sư tử
nhưng lại đụng đầu với gấu,
hay kẻ đi vào nhà đặt tay lên vách
nhưng bị rắn cắn.
20 Nên ngày phán xử của CHÚA
sẽ mang bóng tối đến,
không phải ánh sáng;
bóng tối mịt, không có chút sáng nào.
Chúa không chấp nhận lối thờ phụng của Ít-ra-en
21 CHÚA phán, “Ta rất ghét ngày lễ của các ngươi;
ta không chịu nổi các buổi họp đạo của các ngươi.
22 Khi các ngươi dâng của lễ thiêu
hay của lễ chay cho ta,
ta không chấp nhận.
Ngươi mang đến của lễ thân hữu
bằng gia súc mập béo nhất
nhưng ta không đếm xỉa tới.
23 Hãy dẹp các bài hát ồn ào của các ngươi khỏi ta đi!
Ta không muốn nghe tiếng đờn cầm của ngươi nữa.
24 Hãy để công lý chảy cuồn cuộn như sông,
hãy làm cho lòng nhân từ
chảy như suối không ngưng.
25 Hỡi Ít-ra-en, các ngươi đâu có dâng sinh tế và của lễ cho ta
khi ngươi lang thang trong sa mạc
suốt bốn mươi năm [j].
26 Mà ngươi mang theo mình vua của các ngươi,
thần Xa-cúc, và thần Cai-quan [k],
cùng các thần tinh tú [l] mà ngươi đã làm.
27 Cho nên ta sẽ khiến các ngươi
bị bắt làm tù binh,
và bị lưu đày đến mãi tận Đa-mách,”
CHÚA phán vậy.
Danh Ngài là Thượng-Đế Toàn-Năng.

- A-mốt 5:2 Trinh nữ Trong tiếng Hê-bơ-rơ từ ngữ nầy có nghĩa là “một người đàn bà chưa hề giao tiếp thể xác với đàn ông,” nhưng ở đây có nghĩa là thành Xa-ma-ri.
- A-mốt 5:4 dân Nguyên văn, “nhà.” Đây có thể là hoàng gia của nước ấy.
- A-mốt 5:5 Bê-tên, Ghinh-ganh, Bê-e-sê-ba Những nơi thờ phụng xưa kia. Áp-ra-ham và Gia-cốp xây bàn thờ ở các nơi ấy nhưng Thượng Đế khuyên dân Ít-ra-en hãy xuống đền thờ ở Giê-ru-sa-lem để thờ phụng Ngài.

- A-mốt 5:6 Bê-tên Từ ngữ nầy nghĩa là “nhà của En” hay “nhà của Thượng Đế.” Ở đó có một đền thờ mà dân chúng thuộc mười chi tộc miền Bắc đến thờ phụng.
- A-mốt 5:8 Sao Cày và Sao Rua Hai chòm sao quen thuộc trên bầu trời.

A Lament for Israel
5 Hear this word which I (A)take up against you, a lamentation, O house of Israel:
2 The virgin of Israel has fallen;
She will rise no more.
She lies forsaken on her land;
There is no one to raise her up.
3 For thus says the Lord God:
“The city that goes out by a thousand
Shall have a hundred left,
And that which goes out by a hundred
Shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”
A Call to Repentance
4 For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:
(B)“Seek Me (C)and live;
5 But do not seek (D)Bethel,
Nor enter Gilgal,
Nor pass over to (E)Beersheba;
For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity,
And (F)Bethel shall come to nothing.
6 (G)Seek the Lord and live,
Lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph,
And devour it,
With no one to quench it in Bethel—
7 You who (H)turn justice to wormwood,
And lay righteousness to rest in the earth!”
8 He made the (I)Pleiades and Orion;
He turns the shadow of death into morning
(J)And makes the day dark as night;
He (K)calls for the waters of the sea
And pours them out on the face of the earth;
(L)The Lord is His name.
9 He [a]rains ruin upon the strong,
So that fury comes upon the fortress.
10 (M)They hate the one who rebukes in the gate,
And they (N)abhor the one who speaks uprightly.
11 (O)Therefore, because you [b]tread down the poor
And take grain [c]taxes from him,
Though (P)you have built houses of hewn stone,
Yet you shall not dwell in them;
You have planted [d]pleasant vineyards,
But you shall not drink wine from them.
12 For I (Q)know your manifold transgressions
And your mighty sins:
(R)Afflicting the just and taking bribes;
(S)Diverting the poor from justice at the gate.
13 Therefore (T)the prudent keep silent at that time,
For it is an evil time.
14 Seek good and not evil,
That you may live;
So the Lord God of hosts will be with you,
(U)As you have spoken.
15 (V)Hate evil, love good;
Establish justice in the gate.
(W)It may be that the Lord God of hosts
Will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.
The Day of the Lord
16 Therefore the Lord God of hosts, the Lord, says this:
“There shall be wailing in all streets,
And they shall say in all the highways,
‘Alas! Alas!’
They shall call the farmer to mourning,
(X)And skillful lamenters to wailing.
17 In all vineyards there shall be wailing,
For (Y)I will pass through you,”
Says the Lord.
18 (Z)Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!
For what good is (AA)the day of the Lord to you?
It will be darkness, and not light.
19 It will be (AB)as though a man fled from a lion,
And a bear met him!
Or as though he went into the house,
Leaned his hand on the wall,
And a serpent bit him!
20 Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light?
Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?
21 “I(AC) hate, I despise your feast days,
And (AD)I do not savor your sacred assemblies.
22 (AE)Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,
I will not accept them,
Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings.
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs,
For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.
24 (AF)But let justice run down like water,
And righteousness like a mighty stream.
25 “Did(AG) you offer Me sacrifices and offerings
In the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
26 You also carried [e]Sikkuth[f] (AH)your king
And Chiun, your idols,
The star of your gods,
Which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into captivity (AI)beyond Damascus,”
Says the Lord, (AJ)whose name is the God of hosts.

A Lament and Call to Repentance
5 Hear this word, Israel, this lament(A) I take up concerning you:
2 “Fallen is Virgin(B) Israel,
never to rise again,
deserted in her own land,
with no one to lift her up.(C)”
3 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Israel:
“Your city that marches out a thousand strong
will have only a hundred left;
your town that marches out a hundred strong
will have only ten left.(D)”
4 This is what the Lord says to Israel:
“Seek(E) me and live;(F)
5 do not seek Bethel,
do not go to Gilgal,(G)
do not journey to Beersheba.(H)
For Gilgal will surely go into exile,
and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.[a](I)”
6 Seek(J) the Lord and live,(K)
or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire;(L)
it will devour them,
and Bethel(M) will have no one to quench it.(N)
8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion,(R)
who turns midnight into dawn(S)
and darkens day into night,(T)
who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land—
the Lord is his name.(U)
9 With a blinding flash he destroys the stronghold
and brings the fortified city to ruin.(V)
10 There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court(W)
and detest the one who tells the truth.(X)
11 You levy a straw tax on the poor(Y)
and impose a tax on their grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,(Z)
you will not live in them;(AA)
though you have planted lush vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.(AB)
12 For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.(AC)
There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes(AD)
and deprive the poor(AE) of justice in the courts.(AF)
13 Therefore the prudent keep quiet(AG) in such times,
for the times are evil.(AH)
14 Seek good, not evil,
that you may live.(AI)
Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,
just as you say he is.
15 Hate evil,(AJ) love good;(AK)
maintain justice in the courts.(AL)
Perhaps(AM) the Lord God Almighty will have mercy(AN)
on the remnant(AO) of Joseph.
16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord God Almighty, says:
“There will be wailing(AP) in all the streets(AQ)
and cries of anguish in every public square.
The farmers(AR) will be summoned to weep
and the mourners to wail.
17 There will be wailing(AS) in all the vineyards,
for I will pass through(AT) your midst,”
says the Lord.(AU)
The Day of the Lord
18 Woe to you who long
for the day of the Lord!(AV)
Why do you long for the day of the Lord?(AW)
That day will be darkness,(AX) not light.(AY)
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,(AZ)
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him.(BA)
20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness,(BB) not light—
pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?(BC)
21 “I hate,(BD) I despise your religious festivals;(BE)
your assemblies(BF) are a stench to me.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings(BG) and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.(BH)
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.(BI)
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.(BJ)
24 But let justice(BK) roll on like a river,
righteousness(BL) like a never-failing stream!(BM)
25 “Did you bring me sacrifices(BN) and offerings
forty years(BO) in the wilderness, people of Israel?
26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king,
the pedestal of your idols,(BP)
the star of your god[b]—
which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into exile(BQ) beyond Damascus,”
says the Lord, whose name is God Almighty.(BR)
