17 Poi Ahithofel disse ad Absalom: «Lasciami scegliere dodicimila uomini, perché possa andare a inseguire Davide questa notte stessa;
2 piombando su di lui mentre è stanco e debole, lo spaventerò e tutta la gente che è con lui si darà alla fuga; cosí potrò colpire solamente il re,
3 ma ricondurrò a te tutto il popolo. La morte dell'uomo che cerchi favorirà il ritorno di tutti; cosí tutto il popolo sarà in pace».
4 La proposta piacque ad Absalom e a tutti gli anziani d'Israele.
5 Tuttavia Absalom disse: «Chiamate anche Hushai, l'Arkita, e sentiamo ciò che anch'egli ha da dire».
6 Quando Hushai venne da Absalom, Absalom gli disse: «Ahithofel ha parlato in questo modo; dobbiamo fare come ha detto lui? Se no, fa' tu una proposta!».
7 Hushai rispose ad Absalom: «Questa volta il consiglio dato da Ahithofel non è buono».
8 Hushai soggiunse: «Tu conosci tuo padre e i suoi uomini e sai che sono uomini valorosi e che sono esacerbati come un'orsa privata dei figli nella campagna; inoltre tuo padre è un uomo di guerra e non passerà la notte col popolo.
9 Certamente a quest'ora egli è nascosto in qualche buca o in qualche altro luogo; se all'inizio dovesse piombare addosso ad alcuni dei tuoi, chiunque lo verrà a sapere: dirà: "Tra la gente che seguiva Absalom c'è stata una strage".
10 Allora il piú valoroso, anche se avesse un cuore di leone, si scoraggerà grandemente, perché tutto Israele sa che tuo padre è un prode e che gli uomini con lui sono valorosi.
11 Perciò io consiglio che tutto Israele da Dan fino a Beer-Sceba si raduni intorno a te, numeroso come la sabbia che è sul lido del mare, e che tu in persona vada alla battaglia.
12 Cosí lo raggiungeremo in qualunque luogo si troverà e gli piomberemo addosso come la rugiada cade sul suolo; e di tutti gli uomini che sono con lui non ne scamperà uno solo.
13 Se invece si ritira in qualche città, tutto Israele porterà funi a quella città e noi la trascineremo nel torrente finché non rimanga là una sola pietra».
14 Absalom e tutti gli uomini d'Israele dissero: «Il consiglio di Hushai, l'Arkita è migliore di quello di Ahithofel». L'Eterno infatti aveva stabilito di rendere inefficace il buon consiglio di Ahithofel, per far cadere la rovina sopra Absalom.
15 Allora Hushai disse ai sacerdoti Tsadok e Abiathar: «Ahithofel ha consigliato Absalom e gli anziani d'Israele cosí e cosí, mentre io ho consigliato in questo e questo modo.
16 Ora perciò mandate in fretta ad informarne Davide e ditegli: "Non passare la notte nelle pianure del deserto, ma senz'altro va' oltre, affinché il re e tutta la gente che è con lui non vengano sterminati"».
17 Or Gionathan e Ahimaats rimasero a En-Roghel, perché non potevano farsi vedere a entrare in città; cosí una serva sarebbe andata ad informarli, ed essi sarebbero andati ad informare il re Davide.
18 Ma un ragazzo li vide ed avvertí Absalom. I due allora partirono di corsa e giunsero a Bahurim a casa di un uomo che aveva nel suo cortile una cisterna, e vi si calarono.
19 La donna quindi prese una coperta, la distese sulla bocca della cisterna e vi sparse sopra del grano macinato, senza che alcuno se ne accorgesse.
20 Quando i servi di Absalom andarono in casa della donna e chiesero: «Dove sono Ahimaats e Gionathan?», la donna rispose loro: «Hanno passato il ruscello». Essi allora si misero a cercarli ma non riuscendo a trovarli, tornarono a Gerusalemme.
21 Dopo che questi se ne furono andati i due uscirono dalla cisterna e andarono ad informare il re Davide. E dissero a Davide: «Affrettatevi e passate subito il fiume, perché questo è ciò che Ahithofel ha consigliato contro di voi».
22 Allora Davide si levò con tutta la gente che era con lui e passò il Giordano. Allo spuntar del giorno, non era rimasto neppure uno, che non avesse passato il Giordano.
23 Quando Ahithofel vide che il suo consiglio non era stato seguito, sellò il suo asino e partí per andare a casa sua nella sua città. Mise in ordine le faccende di casa sua e s'impiccò. Cosí morí e fu sepolto nel sepolcro di suo padre.
24 Poi Davide giunse a Mahanaim; e Absalom passò il Giordano, con tutta la gente d'Israele.
25 Absalom aveva posto a capo dell'esercito Amasa, invece di Joab Or Amasa era figlio di un uomo chiamato Jithra, l'Israelita, il quale aveva avuto rapporti sessuali con Abigail figlia di Nahash, sorella di Tseruiah, madre di Joab.
26 Cosí Israele e Absalom si accamparono nel paese di Galaad.
27 Quando Davide giunse a Mahanaim Shobi, figlio di Nahash da Rabbah dei figli di Ammon, Makir, figlio di Ammiel da Lodebar, e Barzillai, il Galaadita da Roghelim,
28 portarono letti, bacinelle, vasi di terra, grano, orzo, farina, grano arrostito, fave, lenticchie, legumi arrostiti,
29 miele, burro, pecore e formaggi di vacca per Davide e per la gente che era con lui, affinché mangiassero, poiché dicevano: «Questa gente ha patito fame, stanchezza e sete nel deserto».

The Advice of Ahithophel and Hushai
17 Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Now let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight. 2 I will come upon him while he is (A)weary and weak, and make him [a]afraid. And all the people who are with him will flee, and I will (B)strike only the king. 3 Then I will bring back all the people to you. When all return except the man whom you seek, all the people will be at peace.” 4 And the saying pleased Absalom and all the (C)elders of Israel.
The Advice of Hushai
5 Then Absalom said, “Now call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he (D)says too.” 6 And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, “Ahithophel has spoken in this manner. Shall we do as he says? If not, speak up.”
7 So Hushai said to Absalom: “The advice that Ahithophel has given is not good at this time. 8 For,” said Hushai, “you know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are enraged in their minds, like (E)a bear robbed of her cubs in the field; and your father is a man of war, and will not camp with the people. 9 Surely by now he is hidden in some pit, or in some other place. And it will be, when some of them are overthrown at the first, that whoever hears it will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’ 10 And even he who is valiant, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will (F)melt completely. For all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and those who are with him are valiant men. 11 Therefore I advise that all Israel be fully gathered to you, (G)from Dan to Beersheba, (H)like the sand that is by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person. 12 So we will come upon him in some place where he may be found, and we will fall on him as the dew falls on the ground. And of him and all the men who are with him there shall not be left so much as one. 13 Moreover, if he has withdrawn into a city, then all Israel shall bring ropes to that city; and we will (I)pull it into the river, until there is not one small stone found there.”
14 So Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than the advice of Ahithophel.” For (J)the Lord had purposed to defeat the good advice of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord might bring disaster on Absalom.
Hushai Warns David to Escape
15 (K)Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, “Thus and so Ahithophel advised Absalom and the elders of Israel, and thus and so I have advised. 16 Now therefore, send quickly and tell David, saying, ‘Do not spend this night (L)in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily cross over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be swallowed up.’ ” 17 (M)Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz (N)stayed at (O)En Rogel, for they dared not be seen coming into the city; so a female servant would come and tell them, and they would go and tell King David. 18 Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom. But both of them went away quickly and came to a man’s house (P)in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down into it. 19 (Q)Then the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground grain on it; and the thing was not known. 20 And when Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
So (R)the woman said to them, “They have gone over the water brook.”
And when they had searched and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. 21 Now it came to pass, after they had departed, that they came up out of the well and went and told King David, and said to David, (S)“Arise and cross over the water quickly. For thus has Ahithophel advised against you.” 22 So David and all the people who were with him arose and crossed over the Jordan. By morning light not one of them was left who had not gone over the Jordan.
23 Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to (T)his house, to his city. Then he [b]put his (U)household in order, and (V)hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father’s tomb.
24 Then David went to (W)Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. 25 And Absalom made (X)Amasa captain of the army instead of Joab. This Amasa was the son of a man whose name was [c]Jithra, an [d]Israelite, who had gone in to (Y)Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother. 26 So Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.
27 Now it happened, when David had come to Mahanaim, that (Z)Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the people of Ammon, (AA)Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and (AB)Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim, 28 brought beds and basins, earthen vessels and wheat, barley and flour, parched grain and beans, lentils and parched seeds, 29 honey and curds, sheep and cheese of the herd, for David and the people who were with him to eat. For they said, “The people are hungry and weary and thirsty (AC)in the wilderness.”

Consejos de Ajitofel y de Jusay
17 Entonces Ajitofel habló con Absalón, y le dijo:
«Voy a escoger a doce mil soldados, y esta misma noche iré en persecusión de David. 2 Caeré sobre él ahora que está cansado y sin fuerzas. Lo atemorizaré, y cuando huyan los soldados que lo siguen, y el rey se quede solo, lo mataré. 3 Así haré que todo el pueblo se vuelva a ti, y cuando lo hagan, vivirán en paz, pues comprenderán que tú sólo quieres la vida del rey.»
4 Este consejo le pareció bien a Absalón y a todos los ancianos de Israel, 5 aunque Absalón le sugirió llamar a Jusay el arquita para conocer su opinión. 6 Y cuando Jusay se presentó ante Absalón, éste le dijo:
«Ajitofel me ha dado un consejo. ¿Tú qué opinas? ¿Debemos seguir su consejo, o no?»
7 Y Jusay le respondió:
«No te conviene seguir el consejo de Ajitofel. 8 Tú conoces a tu padre, y sabes que sus soldados son los más valientes y que su estado de ánimo está herido y busca la venganza. Es como una osa que ha perdido a sus cachorros. Sabes también que tu padre es un guerrero, y que no pasará la noche con el ejército. 9 Tal vez esté escondido en alguna cueva, o en algún otro lugar. Si comienza venciendo a algunos de ellos, quienes lo sepan dirán: “¡Los soldados de Absalón fueron derrotados!” 10 Entonces hasta el soldado más valiente y bravo como león se llenará de temor, pues todo el pueblo sabe que tu padre es un valiente, y sabe también que sus hombres son gente aguerrida. 11 Yo te sugiero que reúnas a todo el ejército de Israel, desde Dan hasta Berseba, y que formen una multitud incontable como la arena del mar, y que tú mismo dirijas la batalla. 12 Entonces lo atacaremos dondequiera que se encuentre, y caeremos como el rocío sobre él y sus seguidores, y ninguno de ellos escapará. 13 Si acaso busca refugio en alguna ciudad, todo el ejército de Israel llevará sogas, y destruiremos la ciudad y arrastraremos las piedras hasta el río para que no quede una sola en su lugar.»
14 Absalón y todo su ejército consideraron que el consejo de Jusay el arquita era más atinado que el de Ajitofel. Y es que el Señor había decidido frustrar el acertado consejo de Ajitofel para preparar la caída de Absalón.
15 Después, Jusay fue con los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar y les dio los pormenores del consejo de Ajitofel y lo que él mismo había aconsejado a Absalón. 16 Les recomendó salir cuanto antes y decirle a David que no pasara la noche en los vados del desierto, sino que cruzara el Jordán para que ni él ni sus seguidores corrieran peligro. 17 Mientras tanto, Jonatán y Ajimaz estaban escondidos cerca de la fuente de Roguel, y como no podían mostrarse entrando en la ciudad; una criada fue y les avisó lo que pasaba; entonces ellos salieron para poner sobre aviso al rey David. 18 Pero al salir ellos, un criado los vio y fue a decírselo a Absalón, así que ellos se dieron prisa y llegaron a la casa de un hombre en Bajurín, la cual tenía un pozo en el patio, y allí se escondieron. 19 La esposa de ese hombre sacó una manta, la extendió sobre la boca del pozo, y sin que nadie lo supiera colocó encima el trigo que habían trillado. 20 Cuando llegaron los hombres de Absalón, preguntaron:
«¿Dónde están Ajimaz y Jonatán?»
La mujer les dijo:
«Ya han cruzado los vados del Jordán.»
Ellos de todos modos los buscaron, y como no los hallaron se regresaron a Jerusalén.
21 En cuanto aquellos hombres se fueron, Ajimaz y Jonatán salieron del pozo y corrieron a decirle al rey David:
«¡Vamos, dense prisa para cruzar el Jordán! ¡Ajitofel ha dado a Absalón un consejo contra ustedes!»
22 Entonces David y todos sus hombres fieles se apresuraron a cruzar el Jordán antes de que amaneciera, y no hubo uno solo que no cruzara el río. 23 Y cuando Ajitofel se dio cuenta de que no se había seguido su consejo, preparó su asno y salió de Jerusalén para irse a su ciudad, y cuando llegó a su casa la puso en orden, y luego fue y se ahorcó. Así fue como murió, y lo enterraron en el sepulcro de su padre.
24 David llegó a Majanayin, mientras Absalón cruzaba el Jordán con todos sus seguidores israelitas. 25 En lugar de Joab, Absalón puso como jefe de su ejército a Amasa hijo de Itra, de Israel. Itra había tenido relaciones con Abigaíl, que era hija de Najás, hermana de Seruyá y madre de Joab. 26 Después de cruzar el Jordán, Absalón acampó en las tierras de Galaad, con los israelitas que lo acompañaban.
27 Cuando David llegó a Majanayin, lo recibieron Sobi hijo de Najás, que era de Rabá de Amón; Maquir hijo de Amiel, de Lodebar; y Barzilay, el galaadita de Roguelín. 28 Éstos llevaron, para David y sus hombres, camas, tazas, vasijas de barro, trigo, cebada, harina, grano tostado, habas, lentejas, garbanzos tostados, 29 miel, manteca, ovejas, y quesos de vaca, para que comieran, pues sabían que estaban cansados, hambrientos y sedientos por haber cruzado el desierto.

17 Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would[a] choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. 2 I would attack him while he is weary and weak.(A) I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king(B) 3 and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.” 4 This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
5 But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai(C) the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.” 6 When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”
7 Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time. 8 You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs.(D) Besides, your father is an experienced fighter;(E) he will not spend the night with the troops. 9 Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place.(F) If he should attack your troops first,[b] whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ 10 Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion,(G) will melt(H) with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.(I)
11 “So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba(J)—as numerous as the sand(K) on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle. 12 Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive. 13 If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley(L) until not so much as a pebble is left.”
14 Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice(M) of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.”(N) For the Lord had determined to frustrate(O) the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster(P) on Absalom.(Q)
15 Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so. 16 Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness;(R) cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.(S)’”
17 Jonathan(T) and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel.(U) A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city. 18 But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim.(V) He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it. 19 His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.(W)
20 When Absalom’s men came to the woman(X) at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”[c] The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.
21 After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.” 22 So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his advice(Y) had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order(Z) and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.
Absalom’s Death
24 David went to Mahanaim,(AA) and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. 25 Absalom had appointed Amasa(AB) over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether,[d](AC) an Ishmaelite[e] who had married Abigail,[f] the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab. 26 The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.
27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash(AD) from Rabbah(AE) of the Ammonites, and Makir(AF) son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai(AG) the Gileadite(AH) from Rogelim 28 brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,[g] 29 honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat.(AI) For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.(AJ)”
