Apoi ei l-au uns pe David ca rege peste Israel. 4 David era în vârstă de treizeci de ani când a devenit rege şi a domnit timp de patruzeci de ani: 5 la Hebron a domnit, peste Iuda, timp de şapte ani şi şase luni, iar la Ierusalim a domnit timp de treizeci şi trei de ani peste întreg Israelul şi peste Iuda.

6 Regele şi oamenii săi au înaintat spre Ierusalim împotriva iebusiţilor care locuiau acolo. Aceştia i-au zis lui David: „Nu vei intra aici, căci până şi orbii şi ologii te vor respinge.“ Credeau că David nu va reuşi să intre în cetate. 7 David a capturat însă fortăreaţa Sionului, care a devenit Cetatea lui David. 8 David zisese în acea zi: „Oricine vrea să îi învingă pe iebusiţi să folosească canalul de apă[a] pentru a ajunge la acei «ologi» şi «orbi»[b], care sunt duşmanii lui David[c].“ De aceea se zice: „Orbii şi ologii n-au voie să intre în palat[d].“ 9 David s-a stabilit în fortăreaţă şi a numit-o „Cetatea lui David“. David a rezidit cetatea de jur împrejur, dinspre Milo[e] înspre interior.

10 David a devenit tot mai puternic pentru că Domnul, Dumnezeul Oştirilor[f], era cu el. 11 Hiram, regele Tirului, i-a trimis soli lui David, iar aceştia i-au adus lemn de cedru, precum şi tâmplari şi zidari care i-au zidit un palat. 12 David a înţeles că Domnul l-a pus drept rege peste Israel şi i-a întărit domnia de dragul poporului Său, Israel. 13 După ce a părăsit Hebronul, David şi-a luat mai multe ţiitoare şi soţii din Ierusalim şi i s-au mai născut astfel mulţi fii şi multe fiice. 14 Acestea sunt numele celor care i s-au născut la Ierusalim: Şamua, Şobab, Natan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elişua, Nefeg, Iafia, 16 Elişama, Eliada şi Elifelet.

Războiul cu filistenii

17 Când au auzit filistenii că David a fost uns drept rege peste Israel, toţi filistenii au pornit în căutarea lui. David a aflat însă acest lucru şi s-a adăpostit în fortăreaţă[g]. 18 Filistenii au venit şi s-au răspândit în valea Refaim. 19 David L-a întrebat pe Domnul:

– Să pornesc împotriva filistenilor? Îi vei da în mâna mea?

Domnul i-a răspuns lui David:

– Du-te, căci negreşit îi voi da pe filisteni în mâna ta.

20 David s-a dus la Baal-Peraţim[h] şi i-a învins acolo. El a zis: „Domnul i-a zdrobit pe duşmanii mei dinaintea mea precum apele care dau năvală rupând totul în cale.“ De aceea locului aceluia i-au pus numele Baal-Peraţim. 21 Filistenii şi-au lăsat idolii acolo, iar David şi oamenii săi i-au luat. 22 Filistenii au venit din nou şi s-au răspândit în valea Refaim. 23 David L-a întrebat pe Domnul, iar El i-a răspuns: „Să nu-i ataci din faţă, ci ia-i pe la spate şi atacă-i în dreptul arbuştilor de balsam. 24 Când vei auzi vuietul de marş în vârful arbuştilor de balsam, să porneşti la atac, căci atunci Domnul va ieşi înaintea ta ca să zdrobească oştirea filistenilor.“ 25 David a făcut aşa cum i-a poruncit Domnul. El i-a lovit pe filisteni de la Ghivon[i] până la Ghezer.

De aceea se zice: „Orbul şi şchiopul să nu intre în Casa Domnului.” 9 David s-a aşezat în cetăţuie, pe care a numit-o cetatea(N) lui David. A făcut întărituri de jur împrejur, în afară şi înăuntrul lui Milo (Cetăţuie). 10 David ajungea tot mai mare şi Domnul, Dumnezeul oştirilor, era cu el.

Casa lui David

11 Hiram(O), împăratul Tirului, a trimis soli lui David şi lemn de cedru, şi tâmplari, şi cioplitori de piatră, care au zidit o casă lui David. 12 David a cunoscut că Domnul îl întărea ca împărat al lui Israel şi că-i ridica împărăţia din pricina poporului Său, Israel. 13 David(P) şi-a mai luat ţiitoare şi neveste din Ierusalim după ce a venit din Hebron şi i s-au născut iarăşi fii şi fiice. 14 Iată(Q) numele celor ce i s-au născut la Ierusalim: Şamua, Şobab, Natan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elişua, Nefeg, Iafia, 16 Elişama, Eliada şi Elifelet.

Biruinţele asupra filistenilor

David, căruia i s-a dat de ştire, s-a pogorât(S) în cetăţuie. 18 Filistenii au venit şi s-au răspândit în valea(T) Refaim. 19 David a(U) întrebat pe Domnul: „Să mă sui împotriva filistenilor? Îi vei da în mâinile mele?” Şi Domnul a zis lui David: „Suie-te, căci voi da pe filisteni în mâinile tale.” 20 David a venit la Baal-Peraţim(V), unde i-a bătut. Apoi a zis: „Domnul a risipit pe vrăjmaşii mei dinaintea mea, ca nişte ape care se rup.” De aceea s-a dat locului aceluia numele Baal-Peraţim (Şesul rupturii). 21 Ei şi-au lăsat idolii acolo şi David şi oamenii lui i-au luat(W). 22 Filistenii(X) s-au suit din nou şi s-au răspândit în valea Refaim. 23 David a întrebat(Y) pe Domnul. Şi Domnul a zis: „Să nu te sui, ci ia-i pe la spate şi mergi asupra lor în dreptul duzilor. 24 Când vei auzi un vuiet(Z) de paşi în vârfurile duzilor, atunci să te grăbeşti, căci Domnul(AA) merge înaintea ta, ca să bată oştirea filistenilor.” 25 David a făcut cum îi poruncise Domnul şi a bătut pe filisteni de la Gheba(AB) până la Ghezer(AC).

David Becomes King Over Israel(A)

5 All the tribes of Israel(B) came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood.(C) 2 In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns.(D) And the Lord said(E) to you, ‘You will shepherd(F) my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.(G)’”

3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant(H) with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed(I) David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old(J) when he became king, and he reigned(K) forty(L) years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months,(M) and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

David Conquers Jerusalem(N)(O)

6 The king and his men marched to Jerusalem(P) to attack the Jebusites,(Q) who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” 7 Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion(R)—which is the City of David.(S)

8 On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft(T) to reach those ‘lame and blind’(U) who are David’s enemies.[a]” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.”

9 David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces[b](V) inward. 10 And he became more and more powerful,(W) because the Lord God Almighty(X) was with him.(Y)

11 Now Hiram(Z) king of Tyre sent envoys to David, along with cedar logs and carpenters and stonemasons, and they built a palace for David. 12 Then David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom(AA) for the sake of his people Israel.

13 After he left Hebron, David took more concubines and wives(AB) in Jerusalem, and more sons and daughters were born to him. 14 These are the names of the children born to him there:(AC) Shammua, Shobab, Nathan,(AD) Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines(AE)

17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold.(AF) 18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim;(AG) 19 so David inquired(AH) of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into your hands.”

20 So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[c](AI) 21 The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off.(AJ)

22 Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; 23 so David inquired of the Lord, and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 24 As soon as you hear the sound(AK) of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front(AL) of you to strike the Philistine army.” 25 So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines(AM) all the way from Gibeon[d](AN) to Gezer.(AO)

5 Then all the tribes of Israel (B)came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Indeed (C)we are your bone and your flesh. 2 Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, (D)you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the Lord said to you, (E)‘You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel.’ ” 3 (F)Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, (G)and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron (H)before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was (I)thirty years old when he began to reign, and (J)he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah (K)seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.

The Conquest of Jerusalem(L)

6 (M)And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against (N)the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,” thinking, “David cannot come in here.” 7 Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (O)(that is, the City of David).

8 Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, who are hated by David’s soul), (P)he shall be chief and captain.” Therefore they say, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”

9 Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it (Q)the City of David. And David built all around from [a]the Millo and inward. 10 So David went on and became great, and (R)the Lord God of hosts was with (S)him.

11 Then (T)Hiram (U)king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters and masons. And they built David a house. 12 So David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that He had (V)exalted His kingdom (W)for the sake of His people Israel.

13 And (X)David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron. The Philistines Defeated(AA)

Will You deliver them into my hand?”

And the Lord said to David, “Go up, for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

20 So David went to (AF)Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place [d]Baal Perazim. 21 And they left their [e]images there, and David and his men (AG)carried them away.

22 (AH)Then the Philistines went up once again and deployed themselves in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 Therefore (AI)David inquired of the Lord, and He said, “You shall not go up; circle around behind them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees. 24 And it shall be, when you (AJ)hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you shall advance quickly. For then (AK)the Lord will go out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 25 And David did so, as the Lord commanded him; and he drove back the Philistines from (AL)Geba[f] as far as (AM)Gezer.
