Censo del pueblo y castigo de Dios
24 (A)De nuevo la ira del Señor se encendió contra Israel, y provocó a David contra ellos y dijo: «Ve, haz un censo de Israel y de Judá(B)». 2 Y el rey dijo a Joab, comandante del ejército, que estaba con él: «Recorre todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, y haz un censo del pueblo para que yo sepa el número de la gente(C)». 3 Pero Joab respondió al rey: «Que el Señor su Dios añada al pueblo cien veces más de lo que son(D), mientras todavía vean los ojos de mi señor el rey; pero, ¿por qué se complace mi señor el rey en esto?». 4 Sin embargo, la palabra del rey prevaleció contra Joab y contra los jefes del ejército. Salieron, pues, Joab y los jefes del ejército de la presencia del rey para hacer el censo del pueblo de Israel.
5 Pasaron el Jordán y acamparon en Aroer, a la derecha de la ciudad que está en medio del valle de Gad(E), y en dirección a Jazer(F). 6 Luego fueron a Galaad y a la tierra de Tahtim Hodsi[a]; fueron a Dan Jaán y doblaron para Sidón(G). 7 Fueron a la fortaleza de Tiro(H) y a todas las ciudades de los heveos y de los cananeos(I), saliendo finalmente hacia el sur de Judá, a Beerseba(J). 8 Habiendo recorrido todo el país, volvieron a Jerusalén después de nueve meses y veinte días. 9 Joab dio al rey la cifra del censo del pueblo(K): había en Israel 800,000 hombres valientes que sacaban espada(L), y los de Judá eran 500,000 hombres.
10 Después que David contó el pueblo le pesó en[b] su corazón(M). Y David dijo al Señor: «He pecado en gran manera por lo que he hecho(N). Pero ahora, oh Señor, te ruego que quites[c] la iniquidad de Tu siervo, porque he obrado muy neciamente(O)». 11 Cuando David se levantó por la mañana, la palabra del Señor vino al profeta Gad, vidente(P) de David, diciendo: 12 «Ve y dile a David: “Así dice el Señor: ‘Te ofrezco tres cosas; escoge para ti una de ellas, para que Yo la haga’”». 13 Así que Gad fue a David y se lo hizo saber, diciéndole: «¿Quieres que te vengan siete años de hambre en tu tierra, o que huyas por tres meses delante de tus enemigos mientras te persiguen, o que haya tres días de pestilencia en tu tierra? Considera ahora, y mira qué respuesta he de dar al que me envió(Q)». 14 David respondió a Gad: «Estoy muy angustiado. Te ruego que nos dejes caer en manos del Señor porque grandes son Sus misericordias(R), pero no caiga yo en manos de hombre».
15 Y el Señor envió[d] pestilencia sobre Israel desde la mañana hasta el tiempo señalado; y desde Dan hasta Beerseba murieron 70,000 hombres(S) del pueblo(T). 16 Cuando el ángel extendió su mano hacia Jerusalén para destruirla(U), el Señor se arrepintió del mal(V), y dijo al ángel que destruía al pueblo: «¡Basta! ¡Detén ahora tu mano!». Y el ángel del Señor estaba junto a la era de Arauna[e] el jebuseo. 17 Entonces David habló al Señor, cuando vio al ángel que hería al pueblo, y dijo: «Yo soy el que ha pecado, y yo soy el que ha hecho mal(W); pero estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho(X)? Te ruego que Tu mano caiga sobre mí y sobre la casa de mi padre».
18 Y Gad vino a David aquel día y le dijo: «Sube, edifica un altar al Señor en la era de Arauna el jebuseo(Y)». 19 David subió conforme a la palabra de Gad, tal como el Señor había ordenado. 20 Y Arauna miró y vio al rey y a sus siervos que venían hacia él; y saliendo Arauna, se postró rostro en tierra delante del rey. 21 Entonces Arauna dijo: «¿Por qué ha venido mi señor el rey a su siervo?». Y David respondió: «A comprarte la era para edificar un altar al Señor a fin de detener la plaga del pueblo(Z)». 22 Y Arauna dijo a David: «Tome y ofrezca mi señor el rey lo que parezca bien a sus ojos. Mire, los bueyes para el holocausto, y los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para la leña(AA). 23 Todo, oh rey, Arauna lo da al rey». Y Arauna dijo al rey: «Que el Señor su Dios le sea propicio(AB)». 24 Pero el rey dijo a Arauna: «No, sino que ciertamente por precio te lo compraré, pues no ofreceré al Señor mi Dios holocausto que no me cueste nada[f](AC)». Y David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos (570 gramos) de plata(AD). 25 Y allí edificó David un altar al Señor, y ofreció holocaustos y ofrendas de paz. El Señor escuchó la súplica por la tierra(AE) y la plaga fue detenida en Israel.

24 Volvió a encenderse la ira de Jehová contra Israel, e incitó a David contra ellos a que dijese: Ve, haz un censo de Israel y de Judá. 2 Y dijo el rey a Joab, general del ejército que estaba con él: Recorre ahora todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, y haz un censo del pueblo, para que yo sepa el número de la gente. 3 Joab respondió al rey: Añada Jehová tu Dios al pueblo cien veces tanto como son, y que lo vea mi señor el rey; mas ¿por qué se complace en esto mi señor el rey? 4 Pero la palabra del rey prevaleció sobre Joab y sobre los capitanes del ejército. Salió, pues, Joab, con los capitanes del ejército, de delante del rey, para hacer el censo del pueblo de Israel. 5 Y pasando el Jordán acamparon en Aroer, al sur de la ciudad que está en medio del valle de Gad y junto a Jazer. 6 Después fueron a Galaad y a la tierra baja de Hodsi; y de allí a Danjaán y a los alrededores de Sidón. 7 Fueron luego a la fortaleza de Tiro, y a todas las ciudades de los heveos y de los cananeos, y salieron al Neguev de Judá en Beerseba. 8 Después que hubieron recorrido toda la tierra, volvieron a Jerusalén al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días. 9 Y Joab dio el censo del pueblo al rey; y fueron los de Israel ochocientos mil hombres fuertes que sacaban espada, y los de Judá quinientos mil hombres.
10 Después que David hubo censado al pueblo, le pesó en su corazón; y dijo David a Jehová: Yo he pecado gravemente por haber hecho esto; mas ahora, oh Jehová, te ruego que quites el pecado de tu siervo, porque yo he hecho muy neciamente. 11 Y por la mañana, cuando David se hubo levantado, vino palabra de Jehová al profeta Gad, vidente de David, diciendo: 12 Ve y di a David: Así ha dicho Jehová: Tres cosas te ofrezco; tú escogerás una de ellas, para que yo la haga. 13 Vino, pues, Gad a David, y se lo hizo saber, y le dijo: ¿Quieres que te vengan siete años de hambre en tu tierra? ¿o que huyas tres meses delante de tus enemigos y que ellos te persigan? ¿o que tres días haya peste en tu tierra? Piensa ahora, y mira qué responderé al que me ha enviado. 14 Entonces David dijo a Gad: En grande angustia estoy; caigamos ahora en mano de Jehová, porque sus misericordias son muchas, mas no caiga yo en manos de hombres.
15 Y Jehová envió la peste sobre Israel desde la mañana hasta el tiempo señalado; y murieron del pueblo, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, setenta mil hombres. 16 Y cuando el ángel extendió su mano sobre Jerusalén para destruirla, Jehová se arrepintió de aquel mal, y dijo al ángel que destruía al pueblo: Basta ahora; detén tu mano. Y el ángel de Jehová estaba junto a la era de Arauna jebuseo. 17 Y David dijo a Jehová, cuando vio al ángel que destruía al pueblo: Yo pequé, yo hice la maldad; ¿qué hicieron estas ovejas? Te ruego que tu mano se vuelva contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre.
18 Y Gad vino a David aquel día, y le dijo: Sube, y levanta un altar a Jehová en la era de Arauna jebuseo. 19 Subió David, conforme al dicho de Gad, según había mandado Jehová; 20 y Arauna miró, y vio al rey y a sus siervos que venían hacia él. Saliendo entonces Arauna, se inclinó delante del rey, rostro a tierra. 21 Y Arauna dijo: ¿Por qué viene mi señor el rey a su siervo? Y David respondió: Para comprar de ti la era, a fin de edificar un altar a Jehová, para que cese la mortandad del pueblo. 22 Y Arauna dijo a David: Tome y ofrezca mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere; he aquí bueyes para el holocausto, y los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para leña. 23 Todo esto, oh rey, Arauna lo da al rey. Luego dijo Arauna al rey: Jehová tu Dios te sea propicio. 24 Y el rey dijo a Arauna: No, sino por precio te lo compraré; porque no ofreceré a Jehová mi Dios holocaustos que no me cuesten nada. Entonces David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata. 25 Y edificó allí David un altar a Jehová, y sacrificó holocaustos y ofrendas de paz; y Jehová oyó las súplicas de la tierra, y cesó la plaga en Israel.

24 And again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the Lord thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?
4 Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.
5 And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:
6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtimhodshi; and they came to Danjaan, and about to Zidon,
7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beersheba.
8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.
9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
10 And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the Lord, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O Lord, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.
11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of the Lord came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,
12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the Lord; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.
15 So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.
16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 And David spake unto the Lord when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.
18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the Lord in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.
19 And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded.
20 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.
21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
22 And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
23 All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The Lord thy God accept thee.
24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
25 And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
