20 So David arose from the ground, (A)washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he came into the house of Yahweh and (B)worshiped. Then he came to his own house, and he asked, and they set food before him, and he ate.
21 Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? [a]While the child was alive, you fasted and wept; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” 22 Then he said, “While the child was still alive, (C)I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘(D)Who knows, Yahweh may be gracious to me, that the child may live.’

21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
