10 După aceea, regele amoniţilor a murit, iar în locul lui a domnit fiul său, Hanun. 2 David a zis: „Voi da dovadă de loialitate faţă de Hanun, fiul lui Nahaş, tot aşa cum şi tatăl său a dat dovadă de loialitate faţă de mine.“ David şi-a trimis slujitorii ca să-l mângâie sufleteşte pe Hanun pentru moartea tatălui său. Când slujitorii lui David au ajuns în ţara amoniţilor, 3 căpeteniile amonite i-au zis stăpânului lor, Hanun: „Chiar crezi că David doreşte să-l cinstească pe tatăl tău, trimiţându-ţi aceşti oameni ca să te mângâie sufleteşte? David i-a trimis la tine pe slujitorii lui mai degrabă ca să cerceteze cetatea, să o iscodească şi să o cucerească.“
4 Atunci Hanun i-a luat pe slujitorii lui David, le-a ras bărbile pe jumătate, le-a tăiat hainele pe jumătate, până la brâu, şi le-a dat drumul. 5 Când David a fost înştiinţat de acest lucru, a trimis să le spună bărbaţilor care fuseseră atât de mult umiliţi: „Rămâneţi în Ierihon până ce vă va creşte din nou barba şi apoi să vă întoarceţi!“ 6 Văzând că se făcuseră urâţi lui David, amoniţii au tocmit douăzeci de mii de pedestraşi aramei din Bet-Rehob şi din regatul arameu al Ţobei, pe regele din Maaca cu o mie de luptători şi încă douăsprezece mii de luptători dintre bărbaţii din Tob.
7 Când a auzit David acest lucru l-a trimis împotriva lor pe Ioab împreună cu toată oştirea, numai războinici viteji. 8 Amoniţii au ieşit din cetate şi şi-au ocupat poziţiile de luptă în faţa porţii, în timp ce arameii din Ţoba şi Rehob, luptătorii din Tob şi cei din Maaca s-au aşezat în câmp deschis. 9 Ioab a văzut că avea de luptat şi în faţă şi în spate. Prin urmare, a ales o parte dintre vitejii lui Israel şi i-a mobilizat împotriva arameilor, 10 iar restul oştirii a pus-o sub comanda fratelui său Abişai, mobilizând-o împotriva amoniţilor. 11 Ioab i-a zis lui Abişai: „Dacă arameii mă copleşesc, să-mi vii în ajutor, iar dacă amoniţii te copleşesc, voi veni eu în ajutorul tău. 12 Fii tare şi îmbărbătează-te pentru poporul nostru şi pentru cetăţile Dumnezeului nostru şi facă-se voia Domnului!“ 13 Când Ioab i-a atacat pe aramei cu oştirea lui, aceştia au fugit dinaintea lui. 14 Amoniţii, văzând că arameii dau bir cu fugiţii, au fugit şi ei dinaintea lui Abişai şi s-au retras în cetate. Atunci Ioab a oprit lupta şi s-a întors la Ierusalim.
15 Văzând că au fost învinşi de Israel, arameii şi-au adunat toate forţele. 16 Hadad-Ezer a trimis după arameii de dincolo de râu[a] şi aceştia au venit la Helam, avându-l în fruntea lor pe Şobac, conducătorul oştirii lui Hadad-Ezer. 17 Când a aflat David acest lucru, i-a adunat pe toţi israeliţii, a trecut Iordanul şi a sosit la Helam. Arameii s-au aşezat în poziţie de luptă împotriva lui David şi s-au încleştat în luptă. 18 Arameii au fugit dinaintea lui Israel. David le-a ucis arameilor şapte sute de oameni care conduceau carele şi patruzeci de mii de pedestraşi[b]. L-a rănit şi pe Şobac, conducătorul oştirii lor, care a şi murit acolo. 19 Văzând că au fost învinşi de Israel, regii vasali lui Hadad-Ezer au făcut pace cu Israel şi i s-au supus. Şi arameilor le-a fost frică să-i mai ajute pe amoniţi.

David Defeats Ammon and Syria
10 (A)After this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. 2 And David said, “I will deal loyally[a] with Hanun the son of (B)Nahash, as his father dealt loyally with me.” So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the Ammonites. 3 But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?” 4 So Hanun took David's servants and shaved off half the beard of each and cut off their garments in the middle, (C)at their hips, and sent them away. 5 When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.”
6 When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of (D)Beth-rehob, and (E)the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of (F)Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of (G)Tob, 12,000 men. 7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of (H)the mighty men. 8 And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate, and (I)the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and (J)the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country.
9 When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians. 10 The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites. 11 And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you. 12 (K)Be of good courage, and (L)let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and (M)may the Lord do what seems good to him.” 13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. 14 And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.
15 But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. 16 And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond (N)the Euphrates.[b] They came to Helam, with (O)Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam. The Syrians arrayed themselves against David and fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 700 chariots, and 40,000 horsemen, and wounded (P)Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. 19 And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel (Q)and became subject to them. So the Syrians were afraid to save the Ammonites anymore.
