David Learns of Saul’s Death

1 Now it came about after ^(A)the death of Saul, when David had returned from ^(B)the slaughter of the Amalekites, that David stayed two days in Ziklag. ²And on the third day, behold, ^(C)a man came from ^[a]Saul’s camp ^(D)with his clothes torn and ^[b]dust on his head. And it happened when he came to David, ^(E)he fell to the ground and prostrated himself. ³Then David said to him, “From where do you come?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” ⁴David said to him, “^(F)How did things go? Please tell me.” And he said, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead; and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.” ⁵Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” ⁶The young man who told him said, “By chance I happened to be on ^(G)Mount Gilboa, and behold, ^(H)Saul was leaning on his spear. And behold, the chariots and the horsemen had overtaken him. ⁷When he looked behind himself, he saw me, and called to me. And I said, ‘Here I am.’ ⁸Then he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I ^[c]answered him, ‘^(I)I am an Amalekite.’ ⁹And he said to me, ‘Please stand next to me and finish me off, for ^[d]agony has seized me because my ^[e]life still lingers in me.’ ¹⁰So I stood next to him ^(J)and finished him off, because I knew that he could not live after he had fallen. And ^(K)I took the crown which was on his head and the band which was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”

¹¹Then ^(L)David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so also did all the men who were with him. ¹²And they mourned and wept and ^(M)fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the people of the Lord and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. ¹³Then David said to the young man who informed him, “Where are you from?” And he ^[f]answered, “^(N)I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.” ¹⁴And David said to him, “How is it you were not afraid ^(O)to reach out with your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” ¹⁵Then David called one of the young men and said, “Come forward, ^[g]put him to death.” ^(P)So he struck him and he died. ¹⁶And David said to him, “^[h]^(Q)Your blood is on your head, because ^(R)your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have finished off the Lord’s anointed.’”

David’s Song of Mourning for Saul and Jonathan

¹⁷Then David ^(S)sang this song of mourning over Saul and his son Jonathan, ¹⁸and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the mourning song of the bow; behold, it is written in ^(T)the Book of Jashar.

¹⁹“^[i]Your beauty, Israel, is ^[j]slaughtered on your high places!
^(U)How the mighty have fallen!
²⁰^(V)Tell it not in Gath,
Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
Or ^(W)the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,
The daughters of ^(X)the uncircumcised will celebrate.
²¹^(Y)Mountains of Gilboa,
^(Z)May there be no dew nor rain on you, or fields of offerings!
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
The shield of Saul, not ^(AA)anointed with oil.
²²^(AB)From the blood of those ^[k]slaughtered, from the fat of the mighty,
^(AC)The bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
And the sword of Saul did not return ^[l]unstained.
²³Saul and Jonathan, beloved and delightful in ^[m]life,
And in their deaths they were not separated;
^(AD)They were swifter than eagles,
^(AE)They were mightier than lions.
²⁴Daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet, with jewelry,
Who put gold jewelry on your apparel.
²⁵^(AF)How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan is ^[n]slaughtered on your high places.
²⁶I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
You have been ^[o]a close friend to me.
^(AG)Your love for me was more wonderful
Than the love of women.
²⁷^(AH)How the mighty have fallen,
And ^(AI)the weapons of war have perished!”

David Made King over Judah

2 Then it came about afterward that ^(AJ)David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up to one of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” So David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “^(AK)To Hebron.” ²So David went up there, and ^(AL)his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess and Abigail the ^[p]widow of Nabal the Carmelite. ³And ^(AM)David brought up his men who were with him, each with his household; and they settled in the cities of Hebron. ⁴Then the men of Judah came, and there they ^(AN)anointed David king over the house of Judah.

And they told David, saying, “It was ^(AO)the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.” ⁵So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, “^(AP)May you be blessed of the Lord because you have ^[q]shown this kindness to Saul your lord, and have buried him. ⁶And now ^(AQ)may the Lord ^[r]show kindness and truth to you; and I also will ^[s]show this goodness to you, because you have done this thing. ⁷Now then, let your hands be strong and be ^[t]valiant, since Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Ish-bosheth Made King over Israel

⁸But ^(AR)Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken ^[u]Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to ^(AS)Mahanaim. ⁹And he made him king over ^(AT)Gilead, over the ^(AU)Ashurites, over ^(AV)Jezreel, over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, even over all Israel. ¹⁰Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he became king over Israel, and he was king for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David. ¹¹And ^(AW)the ^[v]time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

Civil War

¹²Now Abner the son of Ner, went from Mahanaim to ^(AX)Gibeon with the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul. ¹³And ^(AY)Joab the son of Zeruiah and the servants of David went out and met ^[w]them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, ^[x]Abner’s men on the one side of the pool and ^[y]Joab’s men on the other side of the pool. ¹⁴Then Abner said to Joab, “Now have the young men arise and ^(AZ)hold a martial skills match in our presence.” And Joab said, “Have them arise!” ¹⁵So they got up and went over by count, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve from the servants of David. ¹⁶And each one of them seized his ^[z]opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his ^[aa]opponent’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called ^[ab]Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. ¹⁷That day the battle was very severe, and ^(BA)Abner and the men of Israel were defeated ^[ac]by the servants of David.

¹⁸Now ^(BB)the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel; and Asahel was ^(BC)as ^[ad]swift-footed as one of the gazelles that is in the field. ¹⁹Asahel pursued Abner and did not turn ^[ae]to the right or to the left from following Abner. ²⁰Then Abner looked behind himself and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” And he said, “It is I!” ²¹So Abner said to him, “Turn aside for your own good to your right or to your left, and take hold of one of the young men for yourself, and take for yourself his equipment.” But Asahel was unwilling to turn aside from following him. ²²Then Abner repeated again to Asahel, “Turn aside for your own good from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? ^(BD)How then could I ^[af]show my face to your brother Joab?” ²³However, he refused to turn aside; so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt end of the spear, so that the spear came out at his back. And he fell there and died on the spot. And it happened that all who came thereafter to the place where ^(BE)Asahel had fallen and died, stood still.

²⁴But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and when the sun was going down, they came to the hill of Ammah, which is opposite Giah by way of the wilderness of Gibeon. ²⁵And the sons of Benjamin gathered together behind Abner and became one troop, and they stood on the top of a hill. ²⁶Then Abner called to Joab and said, “Should the sword devour forever? Do you not realize that it will be bitter in the end? So how long will you ^[ag]refrain from telling the people to turn back from pursuing their kinsmen?” ²⁷Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, then the people of Judah certainly would have withdrawn in the morning, each from pursuing his brother.” ²⁸So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the people halted and no longer pursued Israel, ^(BF)nor did they continue to fight anymore. ²⁹Abner and his men then went through the Arabah all that night; so they crossed the Jordan, walked all morning, and came to ^(BG)Mahanaim.

³⁰Then Joab returned from pursuing Abner; but he gathered all the people together, and ^[ah]nineteen of David’s servants were missing, besides Asahel. ³¹However, the servants of David had struck and killed many of Benjamin and Abner’s men; 360 men were dead. ³²And they carried Asahel away and buried him ^(BH)in his father’s tomb, which was in Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men traveled all night until the day ^[ai]dawned at Hebron.

David Made King over All Israel

11 ^(A)Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron ^[a]and said, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. ²In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the Lord your God said to you, ‘^(B)You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be leader over My people Israel.’” ³So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord; and ^(C)they anointed David king over Israel, ^(D)in accordance with the word of the Lord through Samuel.

Jerusalem Is the Capital City

⁴Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (^(E)that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. ⁵The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You shall not enter here.” Nevertheless David took the mountain stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David). ⁶Now David had said, “Whoever is first to ^[b]kill a Jebusite shall be chief and commander.” ^(F)Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. ⁷Then David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. ⁸He ^[c]built the city all around, from the ^[d]Millo to the surrounding area; and Joab ^[e]repaired the rest of the city. ⁹^(G)And David became greater and greater, for the Lord of armies was with him.

David’s Mighty Men

¹⁰^(H)Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who remained faithful to him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, ^(I)in accordance with the word of the Lord concerning Israel. ¹¹These constitute the list of David’s mighty men: ^(J)Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, ^(K)the chief of the thirty; he wielded his spear against three hundred ^[f]whom he killed at one time.

¹²After him was Eleazar the son of ^(L)Dodo, the Ahohite, who was ^[g]one of the three mighty men. ¹³He was with David at ^[h]Pas-dammim ^(M)when the Philistines were gathered together there to battle, and there was a plot of land full of barley; and the people fled from the Philistines. ¹⁴But they took their stand in the midst of the plot and defended it, and defeated the Philistines; and the Lord saved them with a great ^[i]victory.

¹⁵Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, while ^(N)the army of the Philistines was camping in the Valley of Rephaim. ¹⁶David was then in the stronghold, while ^(O)the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. ¹⁷And David had a craving and said, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!” ¹⁸So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; however, David would not drink it, but poured it out to the Lord; ¹⁹and he said, “Far be it from me before my God that I would do this. Shall I drink the blood of these men who went ^[j]at the risk of their lives? For they brought it at the risk of their lives.” Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

²⁰As for ^[k]Abshai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the ^[l]thirty, and he wielded his spear against three hundred ^[m]and killed them; and he had a name ^[n]as well as the ^[o]thirty. ²¹Of the three in the second rank he was the most honored, and he became their commander; however, he did not attain the reputation of the first three.

²²^(P)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a warrior of Kabzeel, mighty in deeds, struck and killed the ^[p]two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and struck and killed a lion inside a pit on a snowy day. ²³And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature ^[q]five cubits tall. Now in the Egyptian’s hand was ^(Q)a spear like a weaver’s beam, but he went down to him with a club and snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. ²⁴Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things, and had a name ^[r]as well as the three mighty men. ²⁵Behold, he was honored among the thirty, but he did not attain the reputation of the first three; and David appointed him over his bodyguard.

²⁶Now the mighty men of the armies were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, ²⁷^[s]Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the ^[t]Pelonite, ²⁸Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite, ²⁹^[u]Sibbecai the Hushathite, ^[v]Ilai the Ahohite, ³⁰Maharai the Netophathite, ^[w]Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite, ³¹Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite, ³²^[x]Hurai of the brooks of Gaash, ^[y]Abiel the Arbathite, ³³Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, ³⁴the sons of ^[z]Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shagee the Hararite, ³⁵Ahiam the son of ^[aa]Sacar the Hararite, ^[ab]Eliphal the son of Ur, ³⁶Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite, ³⁷Hezro the Carmelite, ^[ac]Naarai the son of Ezbai, ³⁸Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri, ³⁹Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armor bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah, ⁴⁰Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, ⁴¹Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai, ⁴²Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a chief of the Reubenites, and thirty with him, ⁴³Hanan the son of Maacah and Joshaphat the Mithnite, ⁴⁴Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite, ⁴⁵Jediael the son of Shimri and his brother Joha the Tizite, ⁴⁶Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, Ithmah the Moabite, ⁴⁷Eliel, Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

96 ^(A)Sing to the Lord a ^(B)new song;
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
²Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
^(C)Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
³Tell of ^(D)His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
⁴For ^(E)great is the Lord, and ^(F)greatly to be praised;
He is to be ^(G)feared ^(H)above all gods.

Israel’s Rebelliousness and the Lord’s Help.

106 ^[a]Praise ^[b]the Lord!
Oh ^(A)give thanks to the Lord, for He ^(B)is good;
For ^(C)His mercy is everlasting.
²Who can speak of the ^(D)mighty deeds of the Lord,
Or can proclaim all His praise?
³How blessed are those who maintain ^[c]justice,
^[d]Who ^(E)practice righteousness at all times!

⁴Remember me, Lord, in Your ^(F)favor ^[e]toward Your people.
Visit me with Your salvation,
⁵So that I may see the ^(G)prosperity of Your chosen ones,

And of Aaron, the holy one of the Lord,
¹⁷The ^(AE)earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
And engulfed the ^[o]company of Abiram.
¹⁸And a ^(AF)fire blazed up in their ^[p]company;
The flame consumed the wicked.

¹⁹They ^(AG)made a calf in Horeb,
And worshiped a cast metal image.
²⁰So they ^(AH)exchanged their glory
For the image of an ox that eats grass.
²¹They ^(AI)forgot God their Savior,
Who had done ^(AJ)great things in Egypt,
²²^[q]^(AK)Wonders in the land of Ham,
And awesome things by the ^[r]Red Sea.
²³Therefore ^(AL)He said that He would destroy them,
If ^(AM)Moses, His chosen one, had not stood in the gap before Him,
To turn away His wrath from destroying them.
²⁴Then they ^(AN)rejected the ^(AO)pleasant land;
They ^(AP)did not believe His word,
²⁵But ^(AQ)grumbled in their tents;
They did not listen to the voice of the Lord.
²⁶Therefore He ^[s]^(AR)swore to them
That He would have them fall in the wilderness,
²⁷And that He would ^(AS)bring down their ^[t]descendants among the nations,
And ^(AT)scatter them in the lands.

²⁸They also ^(AU)followed ^[u]Baal-peor,
And ate ^(AV)sacrifices offered to the dead.
²⁹So they ^(AW)provoked Him to anger with their deeds,
And a plague broke out among them.
³⁰Then Phinehas ^(AX)stood up and ^[v]intervened,
And so the ^(AY)plague was brought to a halt.
³¹And it was ^(AZ)credited to him as righteousness,
To all generations forever.

³²They also ^(BA)provoked Him to wrath at the waters of ^[w]Meribah,
So that it ^(BB)went badly for Moses on their account.
³³Because they ^(BC)were rebellious against ^[x]His Spirit,
He spoke rashly with his lips.

³⁴They ^(BD)did not destroy the peoples,
As ^(BE)the Lord had commanded them,
³⁵But ^(BF)they got involved with the nations
And learned their ^[y]practices,
³⁶And ^(BG)served their idols,
^(BH)Which became a snare to them.
³⁷They even ^(BI)sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the ^(BJ)demons,
³⁸And shed ^(BK)innocent blood,
The blood of their ^(BL)sons and their daughters
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And the land was ^(BM)defiled with the blood.
³⁹So they became ^(BN)unclean in their ^[z]practices,
And ^[aa]^(BO)were unfaithful in their deeds.

⁴⁰Therefore the ^(BP)anger of the Lord was kindled against His people,
And He ^(BQ)loathed His ^[ab]^(BR)inheritance.
⁴¹So ^(BS)He handed them over to the ^[ac]nations,
And those who hated them ruled over them.
⁴²Their enemies also ^(BT)oppressed them,
And they were subdued under their ^[ad]power.
⁴³Many times He would ^(BU)rescue them;
They, however, were rebellious in their ^(BV)plan,
And they ^(BW)sank down into their guilt.

⁴⁴Nevertheless He looked at their distress
When He ^(BX)heard their cry;
⁴⁵And He ^(BY)remembered His covenant for their sake,
And ^[ae]^(BZ)relented ^(CA)according to the greatness of His mercy.
⁴⁶He also made them ^(CB)objects of compassion
In the presence of all their captors.

⁴⁷^(CC)Save us, Lord our God,
And ^(CD)gather us from the nations,
To give thanks to Your holy name
And ^(CE)glory in Your praise.
⁴⁸^(CF)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
From everlasting to everlasting.
And all the people shall say, “Amen.”

Paul Sails from Miletus

21 Now when ^(A)we had parted from them and had set sail, we ran ^(B)a straight course to Cos, and on the next day to Rhodes, and from there to Patara; ²and having found a ship crossing over to ^(C)Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail. ³When we came in sight of ^(D)Cyprus, leaving it on the left, we kept sailing to ^(E)Syria and landed at ^(F)Tyre; for the ship was to unload its cargo there. ⁴After looking up ^(G)the disciples, we stayed there for seven days; and they kept telling Paul, ^[a]^(H)through the Spirit, not to set foot in Jerusalem. ⁵When ^[b]our days there were ended, we left and started on our journey, while they all, with wives and children, ^(I)escorted us until we were out of the city. After ^(J)kneeling down on the beach and praying, we said farewell to one another. ⁶Then we boarded the ship, and they returned ^(K)home.

⁷When we had finished the voyage from ^(L)Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais, and after greeting ^(M)the brothers and sisters, we stayed with them for a day. ⁸On the next day we left and came to ^(N)Caesarea, and we entered the house of ^(O)Philip the ^(P)evangelist, who was ^(Q)one of the seven, and stayed with him. ⁹Now this man had four virgin daughters who were ^(R)prophetesses. ¹⁰As we were staying there for some days, a prophet named ^(S)Agabus came down from Judea. ¹¹And he came to us and ^(T)took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, “This ^(U)is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will ^(V)bind the man who owns this belt and ^(W)hand him over to the Gentiles.’” ¹²When we had heard this, we as well as the local residents began begging him ^(X)not to go up to Jerusalem. ¹³Then Paul replied, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For ^(Y)I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die in Jerusalem for ^(Z)the name of the Lord Jesus.” ¹⁴And since he would not be persuaded, we became quiet, remarking, “^(AA)The will of the Lord be done!”

¹⁵After these days we got ready and ^(AB)started on our way up to Jerusalem. ¹⁶Some of ^(AC)the disciples from ^(AD)Caesarea also came with us, taking us to Mnason of ^(AE)Cyprus, a ^(AF)disciple of long standing with whom we were to stay.

¹⁷After we arrived in Jerusalem, ^(AG)the brothers and sisters received us gladly. ¹⁸And the following day Paul went in with us to ^[c]^(AH)James, and all ^(AI)the elders were present. ¹⁹After he had greeted them, he ^(AJ)began to relate one by one the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ^(AK)ministry. ²⁰And when they heard about them, they began ^(AL)glorifying God; and they said to him, “You see, brother, how many ^[d]thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all ^(AM)zealous for the Law; ²¹and they have been told about you, that you are ^(AN)teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, telling them ^(AO)not to circumcise their children nor to ^[e]walk according to ^(AP)the customs. ²²So what is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. ²³Therefore, do ^[f]as we tell you: we have four men who ^(AQ)have a ^[g]vow upon themselves; ²⁴take them along and ^(AR)purify yourself together with them, and ^[h]pay their expenses so that they may ^(AS)shave their ^[i]heads; and then everyone will know that there is nothing to what they have been told about you, but that you yourself also conform, keeping the Law. ²⁵But regarding the Gentiles who have believed, we sent a letter, ^(AT)having decided that they should abstain from ^[j]meat sacrificed to idols and from blood and what is ^[k]strangled, and from sexual immorality.” ²⁶Then Paul ^[l]took along the men, and the next day, after ^(AU)purifying himself together with them, he ^(AV)went into the temple giving notice of the completion of the days of purification, until the sacrifice was offered for each one of them.

Paul Seized in the Temple

²⁷When ^(AW)the seven days were almost over, ^(AX)the Jews from ^[m]^(AY)Asia, upon seeing him in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd and laid hands on him, ²⁸crying out, “Men of Israel, help! ^(AZ)This is the man who instructs everyone everywhere against our people and the Law and this place; and besides, he has even brought Greeks into the temple and has ^(BA)defiled this holy place!” ²⁹For they had previously seen ^(BB)Trophimus the ^(BC)Ephesian in the city with him, and they thought that Paul had brought him into the temple. ³⁰Then the whole city was provoked and ^[n]the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they ^(BD)dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. ³¹While they were intent on killing him, a report came up to the commander of the ^(BE)Roman ^[o]cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. ³²He immediately ^(BF)took along some soldiers and centurions and ran down to ^[p]the crowd; and when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. ³³Then the commander came up and took hold of him, and ordered that he be ^(BG)bound with ^(BH)two chains; and he began asking who he was and what he had done. ³⁴But among the crowd, ^(BI)some were shouting one thing and some another, and when he could not find out the ^[q]facts because of the uproar, he ordered that ^[r]Paul be brought into ^(BJ)the barracks. ³⁵When Paul got to ^(BK)the stairs, it came about that he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the ^[s]mob; ³⁶for the multitude of people kept following them, shouting, “^(BL)Away with him!”

³⁷As Paul was about to be brought into ^(BM)the barracks, he *said to the commander, “May I say something to you?” And he said, “Do you know Greek? ³⁸Then you are not ^(BN)the Egyptian who some ^[t]time ago stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand men of the Assassins out ^(BO)into the wilderness?” ³⁹But Paul said, “^(BP)I am a Jew of Tarsus in ^(BQ)Cilicia, a citizen of no insignificant city; and I beg you, allow me to speak to the people.” ⁴⁰When he had given him permission, Paul, standing on ^(BR)the stairs, ^(BS)motioned to the people with his hand; and when there ^[u]was a great silence, he spoke to them in the ^[v]^(BT)Hebrew dialect, saying,
