Absalom probeert koning te worden in plaats van zijn vader
15 Daarna kocht Absalom een wagen en paarden. Ook nam hij 50 mannen in dienst die voor hem uit moesten lopen. 2 Elke ochtend ging Absalom al vroeg bij de stadspoort langs de weg staan. Daar praatte hij met alle mensen die naar de stad kwamen omdat ze wilden dat de koning over hen zou rechtspreken. Dan vroeg Absalom: "Uit welke stad kom je?" Zo iemand antwoordde dan: "Uit die en die stad van die en die stam." 3 En Absalom zei dan tegen hem: "Je hebt wel gelijk in jouw zaak, maar de koning luistert toch niet naar je. 4 Was ík maar de hoogste rechter in het land. Dan zou iedereen die een rechtszaak had, naar míj toe komen. En ik zou wél eerlijk rechtspreken." 5 En als iemand zich voor hem wilde buigen, greep hij de man bij zijn hand en omhelsde hem. 6 Zo deed Absalom met alle Israëlieten die met hun rechtszaken naar de koning gingen. Zo zorgde Absalom ervoor dat iedereen hem heel graag mocht.
7 Na vier jaar vroeg Absalom aan de koning: "Mag ik alstublieft naar Hebron gaan? Ik wil daar offers brengen die ik aan de Heer heb beloofd. 8 Want toen ik nog in Gesur woonde, in Aram, heb ik de Heer beloofd: 'Als U mij naar Jeruzalem terugbrengt, zal ik U dank-offers brengen.' " 9 De koning antwoordde hem: "Ga in vrede." Zo vertrok Absalom naar Hebron. 10 Maar hij had van tevoren in het geheim boodschappers naar alle stammen van Israël gestuurd met de opdracht: "Zodra jullie op de ramshorens horen blazen, moeten jullie roepen: 'Absalom is koning in Hebron!' 11 Er gingen 200 mannen uit Jeruzalem met Absalom mee. Ze waren als gasten uitgenodigd voor het offerfeest. Ze wisten verder nergens van. 12 Ook liet Absalom Achitofel komen. Achitofel, uit Gilo, was Davids raadgever. Zo werd het een grote samenzwering. En er sloten zich steeds meer mensen bij Absalom aan.
David vlucht weg uit Jeruzalem
13 Toen kreeg David het bericht: "De Israëlieten hebben de kant van Absalom gekozen." 14 Toen zei hij tegen zijn dienaren in Jeruzalem: "We moeten snel voor Absalom vluchten. Want als hij zich haast, zullen we niet meer kunnen ontsnappen. Dan zal hij ons en de bewoners van de stad allemaal doden." 15 Ze antwoordden hem: "Zoals u wil. We zullen alles doen wat u zegt." 16 Toen vertrok de koning te voet uit het paleis, met al zijn mannen en dienaren. Maar hij liet tien van zijn bijvrouwen achter om op het paleis te passen. 17 Zo vertrok de koning uit de stad en al zijn mannen volgden hem. 18 Toen ze bij het Verre Huis kwamen, bleven ze staan. Al zijn mannen trokken langs hem heen. Ook zijn lijfwacht van Keretieten en Peletieten.
Itai uit Gat had zich met 600 mannen bij hem aangesloten. 19 De koning vroeg hem: "Waarom zou jij ook met ons meegaan? Ga terug en blijf bij de nieuwe koning, want je bent een vreemdeling, gevlucht uit je eigen stad. 20 Je woont hier nog maar pas. Als je met ons meegaat, moet je wéér zwerven. Want ik moet vluchten en ik weet niet waar ik een veilige plaats zal vinden. Maar ga jij maar terug met je landgenoten. Het ga jullie goed!" 21 Maar Itai antwoordde: "Ik zweer dat ik overal zal gaan waar u zal gaan, mijn heer de koning. Dat zweer ik bij de Heer en bij u. Ook als het mij mijn leven zal kosten, zal ik u volgen." 22 Toen zei David tegen Itai: "Ga dan maar verder!" Toen trok Itai met al zijn mannen, hun vrouwen en kinderen voorbij. 23 De mensen die stonden te kijken, huilden hevig toen iedereen voorbij kwam. Toen stak ook de koning de beek Kidron over en de hele groep trok in de richting van de woestijn.
24 Ook Zadok, Abjatar en alle Levieten gingen met David mee. De Levieten droegen de kist van het verbond van God mee. Ze hadden de kist neergezet totdat alle mensen uit de stad waren overgestoken. 25 Toen zei de koning tegen Zadok: "Breng de kist van God weer naar de stad terug. Als de Heer medelijden met me zal hebben, zal Hij ervoor zorgen dat ik de kist van het verbond en Jeruzalem weer zal terugzien. 26 Maar als Hij niet meer om me geeft, mag Hij met me doen wat Hij wil."
27 Toen zei de koning tegen de priester Zadok: "Jij bent toch profeet? Ga gerust terug naar de stad, met je zoon Ahimaäz, en Jonatan, de zoon van Abjatar. 28 Ik zal in de woestijn aan de overkant van de beek wachten op berichten van je." 29 Toen bracht Zadok samen met Abjatar de kist van God terug naar Jeruzalem. En ze bleven in de stad.
David ontmoet Husai
30 David beklom huilend de helling van de Olijfberg. Hij had een doek om zijn gezicht geslagen en liep op blote voeten als teken van verdriet. Ook alle mensen die bij hem waren, hadden een doek om hun gezicht geslagen en huilden. 31 Toen David hoorde dat zijn raadgever Achitofel was overgelopen naar Absalom, zei hij: "Heer, zorg er alstublieft voor dat Absalom niets doet met de raad die Achitofel hem geeft!"
32 David kwam op de top van de Olijfberg, bij de offerplaats voor God. Daar kwam de Archiet Husai naar hem toe. Hij had zijn kleren gescheurd en aarde op zijn hoofd als teken van verdriet. 33 David zei tegen hem: "Als je met mij meegaat, is dat alleen maar lastig voor ons. 34 Maar als je teruggaat naar de stad, kun je me helpen. Ga naar Absalom. Zeg tegen hem: 'Ik ben uw dienaar, mijn heer de koning. Vroeger diende ik uw vader, maar nu zal ik ú dienen.' Dan kun jij ervoor zorgen dat Absalom niet zal luisteren naar de raad die Achitofel hem zal geven. 35 De priesters Zadok en Abjatar zijn daar ook. Vertel alles wat je in het paleis hoort aan Zadok en Abjatar. 36 Hun twee zonen, Ahimaäz en Jonatan, zullen het dan aan mij komen vertellen." 37 Zo ging Davids vriend Husai terug naar Jeruzalem. Hij kwam in de stad aan toen Absalom er juist binnen trok.

Absalom’s Treason
15 After this (A)it happened that Absalom (B)provided himself with chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2 Now Absalom would rise early and stand beside the way to the gate. So it was, whenever anyone who had a (C)lawsuit[a] came to the king for a decision, that Absalom would call to him and say, “What city are you from?” And he would say, “Your servant is from such and such a tribe of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your [b]case is good and right; but there is no [c]deputy of the king to hear you.” 4 Moreover Absalom would say, (D)“Oh, that I were made judge in the land, and everyone who has any suit or cause would come to me; then I would give him justice.” 5 And so it was, whenever anyone came near to bow down to him, that he would put out his hand and take him and (E)kiss him. 6 In this manner Absalom acted toward all Israel who came to the king for judgment. (F)So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 Now it came to pass (G)after [d]forty years that Absalom said to the king, “Please, let me go to (H)Hebron and pay the vow which I made to the Lord. 8 (I)For your servant (J)took a vow (K)while I dwelt at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If the Lord indeed brings me back to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.’ ”
9 And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom (L)reigns in Hebron!’ ” 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men (M)invited from Jerusalem, and they (N)went along innocently and did not know anything. 12 Then Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, (O)David’s counselor, from his city—from (P)Giloh—while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom (Q)continually increased in number.
David Escapes from Jerusalem
13 Now a messenger came to David, saying, (R)“The hearts of the men of Israel are [e]with Absalom.”
14 So David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us (S)flee, or we shall not escape from Absalom. Make haste to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly and bring disaster upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”
15 And the king’s servants said to the king, “We are your servants, ready to do whatever my lord the king commands.” 16 Then (T)the king went out with all his household after him. But the king left (U)ten women, concubines, to keep the house. 17 And the king went out with all the people after him, and stopped at the outskirts. 18 Then all his servants passed [f]before him; (V)and all the Cherethites, all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, (W)six hundred men who had followed him from Gath, passed before the king.
19 Then the king said to (X)Ittai the Gittite, “Why are you also going with us? Return and remain with the king. For you are a foreigner and also an exile from your own place. 20 In fact, you came only yesterday. Should I make you wander up and down with us today, since I go (Y)I know not where? Return, and take your brethren back. Mercy and truth be with you.”
21 But Ittai answered the king and said, (Z)“As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in whatever place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also your servant will be.”
22 So David said to Ittai, “Go, and cross over.” Then Ittai the Gittite and all his men and all the little ones who were with him crossed over. 23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people crossed over. The king himself also crossed over the Brook Kidron, and all the people crossed over toward the way of the (AA)wilderness.
24 There was (AB)Zadok also, and all the Levites with him, bearing the (AC)ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and (AD)Abiathar went up until all the people had finished crossing over from the city. 25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, He (AE)will bring me back and show me both it and (AF)His dwelling place. 26 But if He says thus: ‘I have no (AG)delight in you,’ here I am, (AH)let Him do to me as seems good to Him.” 27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a (AI)seer?[g] Return to the city in peace, and (AJ)your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28 See, (AK)I will wait in the plains of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.” 29 Therefore Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God back to Jerusalem. And they remained there.
30 So David went up by the Ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he (AL)had his head covered and went (AM)barefoot. And all the people who were with him (AN)covered their heads and went up, (AO)weeping as they went up. 31 Then someone told David, saying, (AP)“Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray, (AQ)turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”
32 Now it happened when David had come to the top of the mountain, where he worshiped God—there was Hushai the (AR)Archite coming to meet him (AS)with his robe torn and dust on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go on with me, then you will become (AT)a burden to me. 34 But if you return to the city, and say to Absalom, (AU)‘I will be your servant, O king; as I was your father’s servant previously, so I will now also be your servant,’ then you may defeat the counsel of Ahithophel for me. 35 And do you not have Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? Therefore it will be that whatever you hear from the king’s house, you shall tell to (AV)Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36 Indeed they have there (AW)with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send me everything you hear.”
37 So Hushai, (AX)David’s friend, went into the city. (AY)And Absalom came into Jerusalem.

2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.
3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.
4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!
5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.
6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.

12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.
13 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.
14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.
15 And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.
16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.
17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.
18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
19 Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.
20 Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
21 And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.
22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.
23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
24 And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
25 And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the Lord, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:
26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
27 The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
28 See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.
29 Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.
30 And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.
31 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.
32 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
33 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
34 But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.
35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.
36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.
37 So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Absalom's Conspiracy
15 After this Absalom (A)got himself a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2 And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside (B)the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And when he said, “Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,” 3 Absalom would say to him, “See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man designated by the king to hear you.” 4 Then Absalom would say, (C)“Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice.” 5 And whenever a man came near to pay homage to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Thus Absalom did to all of Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7 And at the end of four[a] years Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the Lord, in Hebron. 8 For your servant (D)vowed a vow (E)while I lived at Geshur in Aram, saying, ‘If the Lord will indeed bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will offer worship to[b] the Lord.’” 9 The king said to him, (F)“Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron. 10 But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron!’” 11 With Absalom went two hundred men from Jerusalem (G)who were invited guests, and they went in their innocence and knew nothing. 12 And while Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for[c] (H)Ahithophel the Gilonite, (I)David's counselor, from his city (J)Giloh. And the conspiracy grew strong, and the people with Absalom (K)kept increasing.
David Flees Jerusalem
13 And a messenger came to David, saying, (L)“The hearts of the men of Israel have gone after Absalom.” 14 Then David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us (M)flee, or else there will be no escape for us from Absalom. Go quickly, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down ruin on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.” 15 And the king's servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides.” 16 So the king went out, and all his household after him. And the king left (N)ten concubines to keep the house. 17 And the king went out, and all the people after him. And they halted at the last house.
18 And (O)all his servants passed by him, and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the six hundred Gittites who had followed him from (P)Gath, passed on before the king. 19 Then the king said to (Q)Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Go back and stay with the king, for you are a foreigner and also an exile from your home. 20 You came only yesterday, and shall I today make you wander about with us, since I go (R)I know not where? Go back and take your brothers with you, and may the Lord show[d] steadfast love and faithfulness to you.” 21 But Ittai answered the king, (S)“As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, (T)wherever my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, there also will your servant be.” 22 And David said to Ittai, “Go then, pass on.” So Ittai the Gittite passed on with all his men and all the little ones who were with him. 23 And all the land wept aloud as all the people passed by, and the king crossed (U)the brook (V)Kidron, and all the people passed on toward (W)the wilderness.
24 And (X)Abiathar came up, and behold, (Y)Zadok came also with all the Levites, (Z)bearing the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God until the people had all passed out of the city. 25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Carry the ark of God back into the city.
