⁷ And now the whole clan has risen against your servant, and they say, ‘Give up the man who struck his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed.’ And so they would ^(A)destroy the heir also. Thus they would quench my coal that is left and leave to my husband neither name nor ^(B)remnant on the face of the earth.”

^19 (A)The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.

³⁸ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ^(A)‘This is the heir. Come, ^(B)let us kill him and have his inheritance.’

¹⁷ And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them.

⁶ And the first son whom she bears shall succeed to the name of his dead brother, that ^(A)his name may not be blotted out of Israel.

¹² then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there, and hand him over to the avenger of blood, so that he may die. ^13 (A)Your eye shall not pity him, ^(B)but you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood^[a] from Israel, so that it may be well with you.

⁴⁵ until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?”

¹⁴ Behold, ^(A)you have driven me today away from the ground, and ^(B)from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, ^(C)and whoever finds me will kill me.”
