Josia, koning van Juda

34 Josia was acht jaar toen hij koning werd. Hij regeerde 31 jaar in Jeruzalem. 2 Hij leefde zoals de Heer het wil, net zoals zijn voorvader David. Hij diende God heel nauwkeurig. 3 Toen hij acht jaar koning was, hij was dus nog jong, begon hij de God van zijn vader David te aanbidden. En toen hij twaalf jaar koning was, begon hij Juda en Jeruzalem schoon te maken voor de Heer: hij haalde alle altaren, heilige palen en godenbeelden weg. 4 Hij hield toezicht toen de altaren voor Baäl werden afgebroken. Hij hakte de afbeeldingen van de zon boven die altaren weg. Hij hakte de heilige palen en de godenbeelden om en verpulverde ze helemaal. Het stof daarvan strooide hij op de graven van de priesters die op die altaren de offers hadden gebracht. 5 De botten van die priesters verbrandde hij op de altaren.[a] Zo maakte hij Juda en Jeruzalem weer schoon voor de Heer. 6 Ook de steden in het gebied van Manasse, van Efraïm en van Simeon, en zelfs de steden in Naftali en in de velden rond die steden maakte hij schoon voor de Heer. 7 Hij brak er alle altaren af, hakte de heilige palen om en sloeg de godenbeelden tot gruis. In het hele land hakte hij alle afbeeldingen van de zon om. Daarna ging hij terug naar Jeruzalem.

8 Toen hij 18 jaar koning was gaf hij ook aan Safan, de zoon van Azalia, en de stadsoverste Maäseja en de minister-president Joha, de zoon van Joahaz, de opdracht om de tempel van zijn Heer God te repareren. 9 Ze gingen naar de hogepriester Hilkia en gaven hem het geld dat de deurwachters hadden ontvangen van de stammen van Manasse en Efraïm. Ook het geld van de mensen die nog over waren van het koninkrijk Israël,[b] en van heel Juda en Benjamin en van de bewoners van Jeruzalem. 10 Het was voor de opzichters die toezicht hielden op het werk van de mannen die de tempel van de Heer repareerden. 11 Van het geld moesten stenen gekocht worden, en hout voor de dakbalken van de gebouwen. Want de koningen van Juda hadden nooit iets aan de tempel gedaan. 12 Het waren betrouwbare mannen die daar werkten. De Levieten Jahat en Obadja uit de familie van Merari, en Zacharia en Mesullam uit de familie van Kehat hielden toezicht op het werk.

13 Alle Levieten die muziekinstrumenten konden bespelen, stonden aan het hoofd van de dragers. Ook hadden ze de leiding over alle andere arbeiders. Verder waren de Levieten schrijvers, opzieners en poortwachters.

Het wetboek van de Heer wordt gevonden

14 Toen ze het geld dat in de tempel van de Heer gebracht was, tevoorschijn haalden, vond de priester Hilkia een boek. Het was het boek van de wet van de Heer dat door Mozes was geschreven. 15 Toen zei Hilkia tegen de schrijver Safan: "Ik heb in de tempel van de Heer het wetboek gevonden." En hij gaf het aan Safan. 16 Safan ging ermee naar de koning. Bovendien bracht hij de koning verslag uit van het werk. Hij zei: "Alles wat u bevolen heeft, wordt gedaan. 17 Het geld dat in de tempel van de Heer was, is geteld en aan de opzichters en arbeiders gegeven. 18 En de priester Hilkia heeft mij een boek gegeven." Safan las de koning eruit voor.

19 Toen de koning had gehoord wat er in het wetboek stond, scheurde hij zijn kleren als teken van verdriet. 20 Hij liet Hilkia, Ahikam de zoon van Safan, Abdon de zoon van Micha, de schrijver Safan en zijn dienaar Asaja komen. 21 Hij zei tegen hen: "Ga voor mij en voor de mensen die nog in Israël en Juda zijn overgebleven aan de Heer vragen wat we moeten doen. Want de Heer zal woedend zijn dat wij en onze voorouders niet hebben gedaan wat er in dit wetboek staat."

22 Toen ging Hilkia met de anderen naar de profetes Hulda. (Zij was de vrouw van Sallum, de zoon van Tokat, die een zoon was van Hasra. Sallum was de bewaarder van de priesterkleren.) Hulda woonde in het nieuwe gedeelte van Jeruzalem. Ze vertelden haar wat er was gebeurd. 23 Ze antwoordde: "Dit zegt de Heer, de God van Israël: Zeg tegen de man die jullie naar Mij toe gestuurd heeft: 24 Ik zal een ramp laten komen over de bewoners van deze stad. Ze zullen getroffen worden door alle vervloekingen die in het boek staan dat aan de koning van Juda is voorgelezen. 25 Want ze hebben Mij verlaten. Ze hebben offers gebracht aan andere goden. Ze hebben Mij heel erg kwaad gemaakt met hun zelfgemaakte goden. Daarom zal Ik deze stad straffen. Niets zal Mij nog kunnen tegenhouden. 26 Maar zeg tegen de koning van Juda, die jullie heeft gestuurd om Mij om raad te vragen: Dit zegt de Heer, de God van Israël: u heeft gehoord wat er in het wetboek staat. 27 U bent er heel erg van geschrokken en wilde Mij gehoorzaam zijn. U heeft Mij laten zien dat u heel erg spijt heeft van alles wat er is gebeurd. U vond het vreselijk wat er met deze stad en haar bewoners gaat gebeuren. U heeft uw kleren gescheurd en voor Mij gehuild van spijt en verdriet. Ik heb u gehoord. 28 Daarom zal dit pas gebeuren als u gestorven bent. U zal het niet zelf meemaken en het niet zien gebeuren." Ze brachten het antwoord over aan de koning.

Koning Josia wil dat de mensen weer volgens de wet gaan leven

29 Toen liet de koning alle leiders van Juda en Jeruzalem bij zich komen. 30 De koning ging naar de tempel van de Heer. Iedereen ging met hem mee: alle mannen van Juda, alle bewoners van Jeruzalem, de priesters, de Levieten, en het hele volk, van hoog tot laag, jong en oud. De koning las hun het hele boek van het verbond voor dat in de tempel van de Heer was gevonden.

31 Toen ging hij staan en sloot een verbond met het volk en de Heer. Ze beloofden dat ze voortaan met hun hele hart en hun hele ziel de Heer zouden dienen. Voortaan zouden ze gehoorzaam zijn aan de wetten en leefregels die in het boek van het verbond waren opgeschreven. 32 Hij liet iedereen die daar was en iedereen uit het gebied van de stam van Benjamin meedoen met dit verbond. En alle Jeruzalemmers hielden zich aan alles wat er in het boek van het verbond stond. 33 Josia haalde alle godenbeelden in het land weg. Alle mensen van het land gingen hun Heer God weer dienen. Zolang de koning leefde, dienden ze de God van hun voorouders.

Josiah’s Reforms(A)(B)(C)

34 Josiah(D) was eight years old when he became king,(E) and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed the ways of his father David,(F) not turning aside to the right or to the left.

3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God(G) of his father David. In his twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of high places, Asherah poles and idols. 4 Under his direction the altars of the Baals were torn down; he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them, and smashed the Asherah poles(H) and the idols. These he broke to pieces and scattered over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.(I) 5 He burned(J) the bones of the priests on their altars, and so he purged Judah and Jerusalem. 6 In the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins around them, 7 he tore down the altars and the Asherah poles and crushed the idols to powder(K) and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

8 In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, to purify the land and the temple, he sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the ruler of the city, with Joah son of Joahaz, the recorder, to repair the temple of the Lord his God.

9 They went to Hilkiah(L) the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the temple of God, which the Levites who were the gatekeepers had collected from the people of Manasseh, Ephraim and the entire remnant of Israel and from all the people of Judah and Benjamin and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 Then they entrusted it to the men appointed to supervise the work on the Lord’s temple. These men paid the workers who repaired and restored the temple. 11 They also gave money(M) to the carpenters and builders to purchase dressed stone, and timber for joists and beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had allowed to fall into ruin.(N)

12 The workers labored faithfully.(O) Over them to direct them were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites descended from Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, descended from Kohath. The Levites—all who were skilled in playing musical instruments—(P) 13 had charge of the laborers(Q) and supervised all the workers from job to job. Some of the Levites were secretaries, scribes and gatekeepers.

The Book of the Law Found(R)(S)

14 While they were bringing out the money that had been taken into the temple of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord that had been given through Moses. 15 Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law(T) in the temple of the Lord.” He gave it to Shaphan.

16 Then Shaphan took the book to the king and reported to him: “Your officials are doing everything that has been committed to them. 17 They have paid out the money that was in the temple of the Lord and have entrusted it to the supervisors and workers.” 18 Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.

19 When the king heard the words of the Law,(U) he tore(V) his robes. 20 He gave these orders to Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan(W), Abdon son of Micah,[a] Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king’s attendant: 21 “Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the remnant in Israel and Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord’s anger that is poured out(X) on us because those who have gone before us have not kept the word of the Lord; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written in this book.”

22 Hilkiah and those the king had sent with him[b] went to speak to the prophet(Y) Huldah, who was the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath,[c] the son of Hasrah,[d] keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the New Quarter.

23 She said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: I am going to bring disaster(Z) on this place and its people(AA)—all the curses(AB) written in the book that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah. 25 Because they have forsaken me(AC) and burned incense to other gods and aroused my anger by all that their hands have made,[e] my anger will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched.’ 26 Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: 27 Because your heart was responsive(AD) and you humbled(AE) yourself before God when you heard what he spoke against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before me and tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the Lord. 28 Now I will gather you to your ancestors,(AF) and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place and on those who live here.’”(AG)

So they took her answer back to the king.

29 Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 He went up to the temple of the Lord(AH) with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. 31 The king stood by his pillar(AI) and renewed the covenant(AJ) in the presence of the Lord—to follow(AK) the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, and to obey the words of the covenant written in this book.

32 Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge themselves to it; the people of Jerusalem did this in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors.

33 Josiah removed all the detestable(AL) idols from all the territory belonging to the Israelites, and he had all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. As long as he lived, they did not fail to follow the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

Josiah Reigns in Judah

34 (A)Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father; and he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet a boy, he began to seek the God of David his father, and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the (B)Asherim, and the carved and the metal images. 4 And they chopped down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and he cut down the (C)incense altars that stood above them. And he broke in pieces the (D)Asherim and the carved and the metal images, and he made dust of them and (E)scattered it over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 (F)He also burned the bones of the priests on their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. 6 And in the (G)cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in their ruins[a] all around, 7 he broke down the altars and beat the (H)Asherim and the images (I)into powder and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

The Book of the Law Found

8 (J)Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had cleansed the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the (K)governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz, (L)the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God. 9 They came to (M)Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had collected from (N)Manasseh and Ephraim and from all the remnant of Israel and from all Judah and Benjamin and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 And they gave it to the workmen who were working in the house of the Lord. And the workmen who were working in the house of the Lord gave it for repairing and restoring the house. 11 They gave it to the carpenters and the builders to buy quarried stone, and timber for binders and (O)beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had let go to ruin. 12 And the men did the work faithfully. Over them were set Jahath and Obadiah the Levites, of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to have oversight. (P)The Levites, all who were skillful with instruments of music, 13 were over (Q)the burden-bearers and directed all who did work in every kind of service, and some of the Levites were scribes and officials and gatekeepers.

14 While they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the house of the Lord, (R)Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord given through[b] Moses. 15 Then Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan. 16 Shaphan brought the book to the king, and further reported to the king, “All that was committed to your servants they are doing. 17 They have emptied out the money that was found in the house of the Lord and have given it into the hand of the overseers and the workmen.” 18 Then Shaphan the secretary told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read from it before the king.

19 And when the king heard the words of the Law, (S)he tore his clothes. 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying, 21 “Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that has been found. For great is (T)the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

Huldah Prophesies Disaster

22 So Hilkiah and those whom the king had sent[c] went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter) and spoke to her to that effect. 23 And she said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the curses that are written in the book that was read before the king of Judah. 25 Because they have forsaken me and (U)have made offerings to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands, therefore (V)my wrath will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched. 26 But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, 27 because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and its inhabitants, and you have humbled yourself before me and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the Lord. 28 Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place and its inhabitants.’” And they brought back word to the king.

29 (W)Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 And the king went up to the house of the Lord, with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites, all the people both great and small. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord. 31 And the king (X)stood in his place (Y)and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. 32 Then he made all who were present in Jerusalem and in Benjamin join in it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33 And Josiah took away (Z)all the abominations from all the territory that belonged to the people of Israel and made all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. All his days they did not turn away from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.
