Joash (Jehoash) Reigns over Judah

12 In the seventh year of Jehu, ^(A)Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. ² Jehoash did right in the sight of the Lord all his days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. ³ Only ^(B)the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

The Temple to Be Repaired

⁴ Then Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the sacred things ^(C)which is brought into the house of the Lord, in current money, both ^(D)the money of each man’s assessment and all the money ^[a]which any man’s heart prompts him to bring into the house of the Lord, ⁵ let the priests take it for themselves, each from his acquaintance; and they shall repair the ^[b]damages of the house wherever any damage may be found.”

⁶ But it came about that in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash ^(E)the priests had not repaired the damages of the house. ⁷ Then King Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and for the other priests and said to them, “Why do you not repair the damages of the house? Now therefore take no more money from your acquaintances, but pay it for the damages of the house.” ⁸ So the priests agreed that they would take no more money from the people, nor repair the damages of the house.

⁹ But ^(F)Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in its lid and put it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the Lord; and the priests who guarded the threshold put in it all the money which was brought into the house of the Lord. ¹⁰ When they saw that there was much money in the chest, ^(G)the king’s scribe and the high priest came up and tied it in bags and counted the money which was found in the house of the Lord. ¹¹ They gave the money which was weighed out into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the Lord; and they ^[c]paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the Lord; ¹² and ^(H)to the masons and the stonecutters, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the damages to the house of the Lord, and for all that was ^[d]laid out for the house to repair it. ¹³ But ^(I)there were not made for the house of the Lord ^(J)silver cups, snuffers, bowls, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver from the money which was brought into the house of the Lord; ¹⁴ for they gave that to those who did the work, and with it they repaired the house of the Lord. ¹⁵ Moreover, ^(K)they did not require an accounting from the men into whose hand they gave the money to pay to those who did the work, for they dealt faithfully. ¹⁶ The ^(L)money from the guilt offerings and ^(M)the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the Lord; ^(N)it was for the priests.

¹⁷ Then ^(O)Hazael king of Aram went up and fought against Gath and captured it, and ^(P)Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem. ^18 (Q)Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and ^(R)his own sacred things and all the gold that was found among the treasuries of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house, and sent them to Hazael king of Aram. Then he went away from Jerusalem.

Joash (Jehoash) Succeeded by Amaziah in Judah

¹⁹ Now the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? ^20 (S)His servants arose and made a conspiracy and ^(T)struck down Joash at ^(U)the house of Millo as he was going down to Silla. ²¹ For Jozacar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of ^(V)Shomer, his servants, struck him and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and ^(W)Amaziah his son became king in his place.

Kings of Israel: Jehoahaz and Jehoash

13 In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu became king over Israel at Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. ² He did evil in the sight of the Lord, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, ^(X)with which he made Israel sin; he did not turn from them. ^3 (Y)So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He gave them continually into the hand of ^(Z)Hazael king of Aram, and into the hand of ^(AA)Ben-hadad the son of Hazael. ⁴ Then ^(AB)Jehoahaz entreated the favor of the Lord, and the Lord listened to him; for ^(AC)He saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Aram oppressed them. ⁵ The Lord gave Israel a ^[e](AD)deliverer, so that they ^[f]escaped from under the hand of the Arameans; and the sons of Israel lived in their tents as formerly. ⁶ Nevertheless they did not turn away from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, ^(AE)with which he made Israel sin, but walked in ^[g]them; and ^(AF)the Asherah also remained standing in Samaria. ⁷ For he left to Jehoahaz of the ^[h]army not more than fifty horsemen and ten chariots and 10,000 footmen, for the king of Aram had destroyed them and ^(AG)made them like the dust at threshing. ⁸ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? ⁹ And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son became king in his place.

¹⁰ In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years. ¹¹ He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not turn away from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel sin, but he walked in ^[i]them. ^12 (AH)Now the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did and his might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? ¹³ So Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam sat on his throne; and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

Death of Elisha

¹⁴ When Elisha ^[j]became sick with the illness of which he was to die, Joash the king of Israel came down to him and wept over ^[k]him and said, “^(AI)My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” ¹⁵ Elisha said to him, “Take a bow and arrows.” So he ^[l]took a bow and arrows. ¹⁶ Then he said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” And he put his hand on it, then Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands. ¹⁷ He said, “Open the window toward the east,” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” And he shot. And he said, “The Lord’s arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Aram; for you will ^[m]defeat the Arameans at ^(AJ)Aphek until you have ^[n]destroyed them.” ¹⁸ Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground,” and he struck it three times and ^[o]stopped. ¹⁹ So ^(AK)the man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck five or six times, then you would have struck Aram until you would have ^[p]destroyed it. But now you shall strike Aram ^(AL)only three times.”

²⁰ Elisha died, and they buried him. Now ^(AM)the bands of the Moabites would invade the land in the spring of the year. ²¹ As they were burying a man, behold, they saw a marauding band; and they cast the man into the grave of Elisha. And when the man ^[q]touched the bones of Elisha he ^(AN)revived and stood up on his feet.

²² Now ^(AO)Hazael king of Aram had oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. ²³ But the ^(AP)Lord was gracious to them and ^(AQ)had compassion on them and turned to them because of ^(AR)His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them or cast them from His presence until now.

²⁴ When Hazael king of Aram died, Ben-hadad his son became king in his place. ²⁵ Then ^(AS)Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again from the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken in war from the hand of Jehoahaz his father. ^(AT)Three times Joash ^[r]defeated him and recovered the cities of Israel.

Amaziah Reigns over Judah

14 ^(AU)In the second year of Joash son of Joahaz king of Israel, ^(AV)Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah became king. ² He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddin of Jerusalem. ³ He did right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father; he did according to all that Joash his father had done. ⁴ Only ^(AW)the high places were not taken away; ^(AX)the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. ⁵ Now it came about, as soon as the kingdom was firmly in his hand, that he ^[s](AY)killed his servants who had slain the king his father. ⁶ But the sons of the ^[t]slayers he did not put to death, according to what is written in the book of the Law of Moses, as the Lord commanded, saying, “^(AZ)The fathers shall not be put to death for the sons, nor the sons be put to death for the fathers; but ^(BA)each shall be put to death for his own sin.”

⁷ He ^[u]killed of Edom in ^(BB)the Valley of Salt 10,000 and took ^(BC)Sela by war, and named it ^(BD)Joktheel to this day.

^8 (BE)Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “^(BF)Come, let us face each other.” ⁹ Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “^(BG)The thorn bush which was in Lebanon sent to the cedar which was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ But there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trampled the thorn bush. ^10 (BH)You have indeed ^[v]defeated Edom, and ^(BI)your heart has ^[w]become proud. Enjoy your glory and stay at home; for why should you provoke trouble so that you, even you, would fall, and Judah with you?”

¹¹ But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at ^(BJ)Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. ¹² Judah was defeated ^[x]by Israel, and ^(BK)they fled each to his tent. ¹³ Then Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem and tore down the wall of Jerusalem from ^(BL)the Gate of Ephraim to ^(BM)the Corner Gate, 400 ^[y]cubits. ^14 (BN)He took all the gold and silver and all the utensils which were found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasuries of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.

Jeroboam II Succeeds Jehoash in Israel

^15 (BO)Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? ¹⁶ So Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son became king in his place.

Azariah (Uzziah) Succeeds Amaziah in Judah

^17 (BP)Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. ¹⁸ Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? ¹⁹ They conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to ^(BQ)Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there. ²⁰ Then they brought him on horses and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David. ²¹ All the people of Judah took ^[z]Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the place of his father Amaziah. ^22 (BR)He built Elath and restored it to Judah after the king slept with his fathers.

²³ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and reigned forty-one years. ²⁴ He did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel sin. ^25 (BS)He restored the border of Israel from ^(BT)the entrance of Hamath as far as ^(BU)the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which He spoke ^[aa]through His servant ^(BV)Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of ^(BW)Gath-hepher. ²⁶ For the ^(BX)Lord saw the affliction of Israel, which was very bitter; for ^(BY)there was neither bond nor free, nor was there any helper for Israel. ²⁷ The ^(BZ)Lord did not say that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.

Zechariah Reigns over Israel

²⁸ Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might, how he fought and how he recovered for Israel, ^(CA)Damascus and ^(CB)Hamath, which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? ²⁹ And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel, and Zechariah his son became king in his place.

Paul in Macedonia and Greece

20 After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for ^(A)the disciples, and when he had exhorted them and taken his leave of them, he left ^(B)to go to ^(C)Macedonia. ² When he had gone through those districts and had given them much exhortation, he came to Greece. ³ And there he spent three months, and when ^(D)a plot was formed against him by the Jews as he was about to set sail for ^(E)Syria, he decided to return through ^(F)Macedonia. ⁴ And ^[a]he was accompanied by Sopater of ^(G)Berea, the son of Pyrrhus, and by ^(H)Aristarchus and Secundus of the ^(I)Thessalonians, and ^(J)Gaius of ^(K)Derbe, and ^(L)Timothy, and ^(M)Tychicus and ^(N)Trophimus of ^[b](O)Asia. ⁵ But these had gone on ahead and were waiting for ^(P)us at ^(Q)Troas. ^6 (R)We sailed from ^(S)Philippi after ^(T)the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at ^(U)Troas within five days; and there we stayed seven days.

⁷ On ^(V)the first day of the week, when ^(W)we were gathered together to ^(X)break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his ^[c]message until midnight. ⁸ There were many ^(Y)lamps in the ^(Z)upper room where we were gathered together. ⁹ And there was a young man named ^[d]Eutychus sitting ^[e]on the window sill, sinking into a deep sleep; and as Paul kept on talking, he was overcome by sleep and fell down from the third floor and was picked up dead. ¹⁰ But Paul went down and ^(AA)fell upon him, and after embracing him, he ^(AB)said, “^[f]Do not be troubled, for his life is in him.” ¹¹ When he had gone back up and had ^(AC)broken the bread and ^[g]eaten, he talked with them a long while until daybreak, and then left. ¹² They took away the boy alive, and were ^[h]greatly comforted.

Troas to Miletus

¹³ But ^(AD)we, going ahead to the ship, set sail for Assos, intending from there to take Paul on board; for so he had arranged it, intending himself to go ^[i]by land. ¹⁴ And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene. ¹⁵ Sailing from there, we arrived the following day opposite Chios; and the next day we crossed over to Samos; and the day following we came to ^(AE)Miletus. ¹⁶ For Paul had decided to sail past ^(AF)Ephesus so that he would not have to spend time in ^[j](AG)Asia; for he was hurrying ^(AH)to be in Jerusalem, if possible, ^(AI)on the day of Pentecost.

Farewell to Ephesus

¹⁷ From Miletus he sent to ^(AJ)Ephesus and called to him ^(AK)the elders of the church. ¹⁸ And when they had come to him, he said to them,

“You yourselves know, ^(AL)from the first day that I set foot in ^[k]Asia, how I was with you the whole time, ¹⁹ serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me ^[l]through ^(AM)the plots of the Jews; ²⁰ how I ^(AN)did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and ^[m]from house to house, ²¹ solemnly ^(AO)testifying to both Jews and Greeks of ^(AP)repentance toward God and ^(AQ)faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. ²² And now, behold, bound by the ^[n]Spirit, ^(AR)I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, ²³ except that ^(AS)the Holy Spirit solemnly ^(AT)testifies to me in every city, saying that ^(AU)bonds and afflictions await me. ²⁴ But ^(AV)I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may ^(AW)finish my course and ^(AX)the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to ^(AY)testify solemnly of the gospel of ^(AZ)the grace of God.

²⁵ “And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about ^(BA)preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face. ²⁶ Therefore, I ^[o]testify to you this day that ^(BB)I am ^[p]innocent of the blood of all men. ²⁷ For I ^(BC)did not shrink from declaring to you the whole ^(BD)purpose of God. ²⁸ Be on guard for yourselves and for all ^(BE)the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you ^[q]overseers, to shepherd ^(BF)the church of God which ^(BG)He ^[r]purchased ^[s]with His own blood. ²⁹ I know that after my departure ^(BH)savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing ^(BI)the flock; ³⁰ and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away ^(BJ)the disciples after them. ³¹ Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of ^(BK)three years I did not cease to admonish each one ^(BL)with tears. ³² And now I ^(BM)commend you to God and to ^(BN)the word of His grace, which is able to ^(BO)build you up and to give you ^(BP)the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. ^33 (BQ)I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothes. ³⁴ You yourselves know that ^(BR)these hands ministered to my own needs and to the ^(BS)men who were with me. ³⁵ In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

³⁶ When he had said these things, he ^(BT)knelt down and prayed with them all. ³⁷ And ^[t]they began to weep aloud and ^[u](BU)embraced Paul, and repeatedly kissed him, ^38 [v]grieving especially over ^(BV)the word which he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they were ^(BW)accompanying him to the ship.
