Solomon Requests Wisdom
1 Solomon son of David established himself in his kingdom; the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.
2 Solomon summoned all Israel, the commanders of the thousands and of the hundreds, the judges, and all the leaders of all Israel, the heads of families. 3 Then Solomon, and the whole assembly with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for God’s tent of meeting, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness, was there. 4 (But David had brought the ark of God up from Kiriath-jearim to the place that David had prepared for it; for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.) 5 Moreover, the bronze altar that Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, had made was there in front of the tabernacle of the Lord. And Solomon and the assembly inquired at it. 6 Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before the Lord, which was at the tent of meeting, and offered a thousand burnt-offerings on it.
7 That night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, ‘Ask what I should give you.’ 8 Solomon said to God, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love to my father David, and have made me succeed him as king. 9 O Lord God, let your promise to my father David now be fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people, for who can rule this great people of yours?’ 11 God answered Solomon, ‘Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honour, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may rule my people over whom I have made you king, 12 wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honour, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.’ 13 So Solomon came from[a] the high place at Gibeon, from the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem. And he reigned over Israel.
Solomon’s Military and Commercial Activity
14 Solomon gathered together chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 15 The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stone, and he made cedar as plentiful as the sycomore of the Shephelah. 16 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and Kue; the king’s traders received them from Kue at the prevailing price. 17 They imported from Egypt, and then exported, a chariot for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for one hundred and fifty; so through them these were exported to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.

Salomón pide sabiduría(A)
1 Salomón hijo de David fue afirmado en su reino, y el Señor su Dios estaba con él y lo encumbró. 2 Salomón convocó a todo Israel y a los jefes de millares y de centenas, lo mismo que a los jueces y a todos los jefes de familia de Israel, 3 y él y toda la asamblea se dirigieron al lugar alto que había en Gabaón, pues allí estaba el tabernáculo de reunión de Dios que Moisés, el siervo del Señor, había hecho en el desierto. 4 David había traído el arca de Dios de Quiriat Yearín al lugar que le había preparado en Jerusalén,(B) donde él le había levantado una tienda 5 Delante del tabernáculo del Señor estaba el altar de bronce(C) que había hecho Besalel hijo de Uri, hijo de Jur, y allí fueron Salomón y la asamblea para consultar al Señor. 6 Una vez allí, y en presencia del Señor, Salomón subió al altar de bronce que estaba en el tabernáculo de reunión, y sobre él ofreció mil holocaustos.
7 Esa misma noche Dios se le apareció a Salomón y le dijo:
«Pídeme lo que quieras que yo te dé.»
8 Y Salomón le dijo a Dios:
«Tú has tenido gran misericordia de David, mi padre, y a mí me has puesto en su lugar como rey. 9 Señor y Dios, confirma ahora la promesa que le hiciste a David, mi padre, pues tú me has puesto como rey de un pueblo tan numeroso como el polvo de la tierra.(D) 10 Por favor, dame sabiduría y conocimiento para presentarme delante de este pueblo. A decir verdad, ¿quién podrá gobernar a tu pueblo? ¡Es tan grande!»
11 Y Dios le dijo a Salomón:
«Por haber pensado así, y por no haber pedido riquezas, ni bienes ni gloria, ni la vida de los que no te quieren, ni una larga vida, sino que has pedido tener sabiduría y conocimiento para gobernar a mi pueblo, sobre el cual te he puesto como rey, 12 recibirás sabiduría y conocimiento, y además te daré riquezas, bienes y gloria, como nunca antes tuvieron los reyes que te antecedieron, ni tendrán los reyes que te sucedan.»
13 Salomón se apartó entonces del tabernáculo de reunión, y desde el lugar alto que estaba en Gabaón volvió a Jerusalén para reinar sobre Israel.
Salomón comercia en caballos y en carros(E)
14 Salomón acumuló carros de guerra y gente de a caballo, y llegó a tener mil cuatrocientos carros de guerra y doce mil jinetes,(F) los cuales guardaba en las fortalezas construidas para tal efecto, y también con él en Jerusalén. 15 También acumuló en Jerusalén plata y oro, como quien amontona piedras,(G) y el cedro abundaba como los cabrahigos de la llanura. 16 Los mercaderes del reino compraban al mayoreo para Salomón(H) caballos y lienzos finos de Egipto. 17 Iban a Egipto y compraban un carro de guerra por seiscientas piezas de plata, y un caballo por ciento cincuenta, y todos los reyes hititas y sirios los compraban por medio de ellos.

1 Solomon son of David established(C) himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with(D) him and made him exceedingly great.(E)
2 Then Solomon spoke to all Israel(F)—to the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, to the judges and to all the leaders in Israel, the heads of families— 3 and Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon,(G) for God’s tent of meeting(H) was there, which Moses(I) the Lord’s servant had made in the wilderness. 4 Now David had brought up the ark(J) of God from Kiriath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent(K) for it in Jerusalem. 5 But the bronze altar(L) that Bezalel(M) son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; so Solomon and the assembly inquired(N) of him there. 6 Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.
7 That night God appeared(O) to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”
8 Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me(P) king in his place. 9 Now, Lord God, let your promise(Q) to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth.(R) 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead(S) this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth,(T) possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor,(U) such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.(V)”
13 Then Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting. And he reigned over Israel.
14 Solomon accumulated chariots(W) and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[a] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 15 The king made silver and gold(X) as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. 16 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[b]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 17 They imported a chariot(Y) from Egypt for six hundred shekels[c] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[d] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.
