New International Version

God’s Promise to David^(A)

17 After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.^(B)”

²Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind,^(C) do it, for God is with you.”

³But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

⁴“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: You^(D) are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. ⁵I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. ⁶Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders^[a] whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?^(E)”’

⁷“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler^(F) over my people Israel. ⁸I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. ⁹And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning ¹⁰and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders^(G) over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.

“‘I declare to you that the Lord will build a house for you: ¹¹When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹²He is the one who will build^(H) a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.^(I) ¹³I will be his father,^(J) and he will be my son.^(K) I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. ¹⁴I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne^(L) will be established forever.^(M)’”

¹⁵Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

David’s Prayer^(N)

¹⁶Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? ¹⁷And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.

¹⁸“What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, ¹⁹Lord. For the sake^(O) of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.^(P)

²⁰“There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you,^(Q) as we have heard with our own ears. ²¹And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem^(R) a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? ²²You made your people Israel your very own forever,^(S) and you, Lord, have become their God.

²³“And now, Lord, let the promise^(T) you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, ²⁴so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you.

²⁵“You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. ²⁶You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. ²⁷Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight;^(U) for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”

The Lord Will Care for Judah

10 Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime;
    it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms.
He gives showers of rain^(A) to all people,
    and plants of the field^(B) to everyone.
²The idols^(C) speak deceitfully,
    diviners^(D) see visions that lie;
they tell dreams^(E) that are false,
    they give comfort in vain.^(F)
Therefore the people wander like sheep
    oppressed for lack of a shepherd.^(G)

³“My anger burns against the shepherds,
    and I will punish the leaders;^(H)
for the Lord Almighty will care
    for his flock, the people of Judah,
    and make them like a proud horse in battle.^(I)
⁴From Judah will come the cornerstone,^(J)
    from him the tent peg,^(K)
from him the battle bow,^(L)
    from him every ruler.
⁵Together they^[a] will be like warriors in battle
    trampling their enemy into the mud of the streets.^(M)
They will fight because the Lord is with them,
    and they will put the enemy horsemen to shame.^(N)

⁶“I will strengthen^(O) Judah
    and save the tribes of Joseph.
I will restore them
    because I have compassion^(P) on them.^(Q)
They will be as though
    I had not rejected them,
for I am the Lord their God
    and I will answer^(R) them.
⁷The Ephraimites will become like warriors,
    and their hearts will be glad as with wine.^(S)
Their children will see it and be joyful;
    their hearts will rejoice^(T) in the Lord.
⁸I will signal^(U) for them
    and gather them in.
Surely I will redeem them;
    they will be as numerous^(V) as before.
⁹Though I scatter them among the peoples,
    yet in distant lands they will remember me.^(W)
They and their children will survive,
    and they will return.
¹⁰I will bring them back from Egypt
    and gather them from Assyria.^(X)
I will bring them to Gilead^(Y) and Lebanon,
    and there will not be room^(Z) enough for them.
¹¹They will pass through the sea of trouble;
    the surging sea will be subdued
    and all the depths of the Nile will dry up.^(AA)
Assyria’s pride^(AB) will be brought down
    and Egypt’s scepter^(AC) will pass away.^(AD)
¹²I will strengthen^(AE) them in the Lord
    and in his name they will live securely,^(AF)”
declares the Lord.

2 My dear children,^(A) I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate^(B) with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. ²He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,^(C) and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.^(D)

Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers

³We know^(E) that we have come to know him^(F) if we keep his commands.^(G) ⁴Whoever says, “I know him,”^(H) but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.^(I) ⁵But if anyone obeys his word,^(J) love for God^[a] is truly made complete in them.^(K) This is how we know^(L) we are in him: ⁶Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.^(M)

⁷Dear friends,^(N) I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.^(O) This old command is the message you have heard. ⁸Yet I am writing you a new command;^(P) its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing^(Q) and the true light^(R) is already shining.^(S)

⁹Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister^[b]^(T) is still in the darkness.^(U) ¹⁰Anyone who loves their brother and sister^[c] lives in the light,^(V) and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.^(W) ¹¹But anyone who hates a brother or sister^(X) is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness.^(Y) They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.^(Z)

Reasons for Writing

¹²I am writing to you, dear children,^(AA)
    because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.^(AB)
¹³I am writing to you, fathers,
    because you know him who is from the beginning.^(AC)
I am writing to you, young men,
    because you have overcome^(AD) the evil one.^(AE)

¹⁴I write to you, dear children,^(AF)
    because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
    because you know him who is from the beginning.^(AG)
I write to you, young men,
    because you are strong,^(AH)
    and the word of God^(AI) lives in you,^(AJ)
    and you have overcome the evil one.^(AK)

On Not Loving the World

¹⁵Do not love the world or anything in the world.^(AL) If anyone loves the world, love for the Father^[d] is not in them.^(AM) ¹⁶For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh,^(AN) the lust of the eyes,^(AO) and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. ¹⁷The world and its desires pass away,^(AP) but whoever does the will of God^(AQ) lives forever.

Warnings Against Denying the Son

¹⁸Dear children, this is the last hour;^(AR) and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,^(AS) even now many antichrists have come.^(AT) This is how we know it is the last hour. ¹⁹They went out from us,^(AU) but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.^(AV)

²⁰But you have an anointing^(AW) from the Holy One,^(AX) and all of you know the truth.^[e]^(AY) ²¹I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it^(AZ) and because no lie comes from the truth. ²²Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.^(BA) ²³No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.^(BB)

²⁴As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning^(BC) remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.^(BD) ²⁵And this is what he promised us—eternal life.^(BE)

²⁶I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.^(BF) ²⁷As for you, the anointing^(BG) you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things^(BH) and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.^(BI)

God’s Children and Sin

²⁸And now, dear children,^(BJ) continue in him, so that when he appears^(BK) we may be confident^(BL) and unashamed before him at his coming.^(BM)

²⁹If you know that he is righteous,^(BN) you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.^(BO)
