4 Sve što je Samuel govorio pročulo se po cijelome Izraelu.
Filistejci otimaju Kovčeg saveza
Kad su Izraelci krenuli u rat protiv Filistejaca, utaborili su se kod Eben Ezera, a Filistejci kod Afeka. 2 Filistejci su se svrstali u bojne redove prema Izraelcima. Povela se žestoka bitka. Filistejci su tada porazili Izraelce i pobili četiri tisuće ljudi.
3 Kad se preostala izraelska vojska vratila u tabor, njihovi su ih starješine pitali: »Zašto je BOG dopustio da nas Filistejci danas poraze? Idemo vratiti Kovčeg saveza iz Šila, da bude uz nas i da nas spasi od neprijatelja.«
4 Vojska je poslala ljude u Šilo i oni su donijeli Kovčeg saveza BOGA Svevladara, koji sjedi na prijestolju među krilatim bićima, na poklopcu Kovčega. Dvojica su Elijevih sinova, Hofni i Pinhas, pratila Kovčeg saveza. 5 Kad je kovčeg BOŽJEGA saveza stigao u tabor, svi su se Izraelci počeli toliko glasno veseliti da se potreslo tlo.
6 Kako su i Filistejci čuli svu tu viku, zapitali su se: »Kakva je to vika u izraelskom taboru?«
A kad su doznali da je to kovčeg BOŽJEGA saveza stigao u tabor, 7 uplašili su se i pomislili: »Bogovi su stigli u njihov tabor! Jao, nama! Ovog dosad nije bilo! 8 Jao, nama! Tko će nas spasiti od tih moćnih bogova? To su bogovi koji su napali Egipćane svakakvim pošastima! 9 Budite hrabri, Filistejci! Budite pravi muškarci! Inače će vas Izraelci porobiti kao što ste vi njih! Budite muškarci i borite se!«
10 Filistejci su napali Izraelce i ponovo ih porazili. Izraelci su se razbježali svaki svojoj kući. Bio je to velik pokolj, trideset tisuća izraelskih pješaka palo je u tom boju. 11 Oteli su Božji kovčeg, a Hofni i Pinhas, dvojica Elijevih sinova, poginuli su.
Elijeva smrt
12 Jedan je Izraelac iz Benjaminovog plemena pobjegao s bojišta u Šilo, razderane odjeće i glave posute prašinom. 13 Baš kad je dolazio, svećenik Eli sjedio je kraj puta na svome stolcu i promatrao u iščekivanju. Strepio je zbog Božjeg kovčega. Kad je taj čovjek ušao u grad i ispričao što se sve dogodilo, cijeli je grad zakukao.
14 Eli je čuo viku pa je upitao: »Kakva je to graja?«
A taj čovjek dotrči do Elija i sve mu ispriča. 15 Eli je tada imao devedeset i osam godina. Vid mu je bio toliko slab da je jedva vidio. 16 Čovjek mu je rekao: »Stižem s bojišta. Danas sam pobjegao odande.«
Eli ga upita: »Kako je bilo, sinko?«
17 »Izrael se razbježao i pobjegao pred Filistejcima. Preostala je vojska pretrpjela težak poraz. Obojica su tvojih sinova mrtva, a Božji je kovčeg otet.«
18 Kad je ovaj spomenuo Božji kovčeg, Eli, star i težak, pao je unatrag sa stolca, pokraj vrata, slomio vrat i umro.
Eli je četrdeset godina bio sudac u Izraelu.
19 A Elijeva snaha, Pinhasova žena, bila je trudna i pred porođajem. Kad je čula da su oteli Božji kovčeg i da su joj svekar i muž mrtvi, zgrčila se od trudova i počela rađati. Izmučili su je jaki bolovi.
20 Dok je umirala, tješile su je žene koje su joj pomagale: »Ne boj se, rodila si sina!«
No ona nije odgovarala, niti je pokazala da joj je stalo.
21 Djetetu je dala ime Ikabod[a], što znači: »Slava je otišla iz Izraela«, a mislila je na oteti Božji kovčeg i smrt svog svekra i muža. 22 »Slava je otišla iz Izraela«, rekla je, »jer je otet Božji kovčeg.«
Božji kovčeg donosi nevolje Filistejcima
5 Kad su Filistejci oteli Božji kovčeg, prenijeli su ga iz Eben Ezera u Ašdod. 2 Postavili su ga u hram boga Dagona i stavili pored Dagonovog kipa. 3 Sutradan, kad su stanovnici Ašdoda ustali, a ono—Dagon leži licem na zemlji pred Božjim kovčegom! Podigli su ga i vratili na njegovo mjesto. 4 Kad su ustali sljedećeg jutra, vidjeli su da je Dagon opet pao licem na zemlju pred Božjim kovčegom. Glava i ruke kipa bile su odlomljene i ležale su na pragu hrama. Ostao mu je samo trup. 5 Zato do današnjeg dana Dagonovi svećenici ne staju nogom na prag kad ulaze u Dagonov hram u Ašdodu.
6 BOG je potom i žestoko kaznio stanovnike Ašdoda i okolice. Učinio je da im rastu tumori i da štakori prekriju njihova polja[b] pa se velik strah uvukao u narod.
7 Kad su stanovnici Ašdoda vidjeli što se sve događa, rekli su: »Kovčeg izraelskog Boga ne smije više ostati kod nas. On kažnjava i nas i našeg boga Dagona.«
8 Narod je sazvao filistejske vladare da ih pita: »Što da činimo s kovčegom izraelskog Boga?«
Odgovorili su: »Neka se kovčeg izraelskog boga premjesti u Gat.«
I tako su premjestili kovčeg izraelskog Boga. 9 No, čim su to učinili, BOG je kaznio i taj grad. To je i ondje izazvalo velik strah jer su i njihovim stanovnicima, od najmlađeg do najstarijeg, izrastali tumori. 10 Zatim su Božji kovčeg poslali u Ekron.
Ali, kad je Božji kovčeg stigao u Ekron, Ekronci su se pobunili i rekli: »Donijeli su nam kovčeg izraelskog Boga da unište i nas i naš narod!«
11 Ekronci su sazvali filistejske vladare i rekli im: »Nosite odavde kovčeg izraelskog Boga! Neka se vrati na svoje mjesto prije nego što uništi i nas i naš narod!«
Smrtni je strah obuzeo cijeli grad budući da ih je Bog žestoko kažnjavao. 12 Kod onih koji nisu umrli, izrasli su tumori, a zapomaganje iz grada čulo se do neba.
Filistejci vraćaju Kovčeg saveza
6 BOŽJI je kovčeg bio sedam mjeseci u filistejskoj zemlji, 2 a onda su Filistejci sazvali svećenike i vračare pa ih pitali: »Što da učinimo s BOŽJIM kovčegom? Recite nam kako da ga vratimo na njegovo mjesto?«
3 Odgovorili su im: »Kad vraćate kovčeg izraelskog Boga, ne vraćajte ga bez ičega. Uz njega pošaljite i žrtveni dar za oproštenje. Tek tada ćete ozdraviti i znati zašto vas je njihov Bog kažnjavao.«
4 Oni su nato pitali: »A kakav žrtveni dar da pošaljemo?«
Odgovorili su im: »Budući da postoji petorica filistejskih vladara, pošaljite pet zlatnih tumora i pet zlatnih štakora jer je ista pošast pogodila i vas i vaše vladare. 5 Napravite likove tumora i likove štakora, koji haraju zemljom, pa dajte čast izraelskom Bogu. Možda će tada prestati kažnjavati i vas, i vaše bogove i vašu zemlju. 6 Nemojte biti tvrdoglavi kao što su to bili Egipćani i faraon. Kad ih je kaznio, nisu li pustili Izraelce?
7 Napravite nova kola, upregnite dvije krave, koje su se otelile ali još nisu nosile jaram. Krave upregnite, a njihovu telad vratite u staju. 8 Stavite zatim BOŽJI kovčeg na kola, a uz njega sanduk sa zlatnim predmetima koje dajete kao žrtveni dar za oproštenje. Sve to pošaljite na put. 9 Ali, držite kola na oku. Ako krenu prema svojoj zemlji, putem Bet Šemeša, znači da nam je BOG prouzročio ovu veliku nevolju. Ako ne krenu onamo, znat ćemo da nas nije on kaznio, nego nam se ovo događa slučajno.«
10 Tako su i učinili. Uzeli su dvije krave, koje su se tek otelile, upregnuli ih u kola, a njihovu telad zatvorili u staju. 11 Na kola su stavili BOŽJI kovčeg i uz njega sanduk sa zlatnim likovima štakora i tumora. 12 Krave su krenule ravno putem Bet Šemeša. Držale su se tog puta, nimalo ne skrećući, i stalno su mukale. Filistejski su vladari išli za njima sve do granice Bet Šemeša.
13 Stanovnici su Bet Šemeša upravo tada bili u polju i želi pšenicu. Kad su ugledali Kovčeg, obradovali su se i krenuli mu ususret. 14 A kola su stigla u polje Jošue iz Bet Šemeša i stala pored velikog kamena. Stanovnici su tada rascijepali kola, a krave prinijeli BOGU kao žrtvu paljenicu. 15 Leviti su skinuli BOŽJI kovčeg s kola, kao i sanduk koji je bio pored njega. Sve su to stavili na onaj veliki kamen.
Toga su dana stanovnici Bet Šemeša prinosili BOGU žrtve paljenice. 16 Petorica filistejskih vladara promatrali su što se ondje događalo pa su se istog dana vratili u Ekron.

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)
The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(AB) to Ashdod.(AC) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(AD) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(AE) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(AF) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(AG)
6 The Lord’s hand(AH) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(AI) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[d](AJ) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(AK) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(AL)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(AM) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[e] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(AN)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(AO) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[f] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(AP) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
The Ark Returned to Israel
6 When the ark of the Lord had been in Philistine territory seven months, 2 the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners(AQ) and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it back to its place.”
3 They answered, “If you return the ark of the god of Israel, do not send it back to him without a gift;(AR) by all means send a guilt offering(AS) to him. Then you will be healed, and you will know why his hand(AT) has not been lifted from you.”
4 The Philistines asked, “What guilt offering should we send to him?”
They replied, “Five gold tumors and five gold rats, according to the number(AU) of the Philistine rulers, because the same plague(AV) has struck both you and your rulers. 5 Make models of the tumors(AW) and of the rats that are destroying the country, and give glory(AX) to Israel’s god. Perhaps he will lift his hand from you and your gods and your land. 6 Why do you harden(AY) your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh did? When Israel’s god dealt harshly with them,(AZ) did they(BA) not send the Israelites out so they could go on their way?
7 “Now then, get a new cart(BB) ready, with two cows that have calved and have never been yoked.(BC) Hitch the cows to the cart, but take their calves away and pen them up. 8 Take the ark of the Lord and put it on the cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending back to him as a guilt offering. Send it on its way, 9 but keep watching it. If it goes up to its own territory, toward Beth Shemesh,(BD) then the Lord has brought this great disaster on us. But if it does not, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us but that it happened to us by chance.”
10 So they did this. They took two such cows and hitched them to the cart and penned up their calves. 11 They placed the ark of the Lord on the cart and along with it the chest containing the gold rats and the models of the tumors. 12 Then the cows went straight up toward Beth Shemesh, keeping on the road and lowing all the way; they did not turn to the right or to the left. The rulers of the Philistines followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat(BE) in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight. 14 The cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and there it stopped beside a large rock. The people chopped up the wood of the cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering(BF) to the Lord. 15 The Levites(BG) took down the ark of the Lord, together with the chest containing the gold objects, and placed them on the large rock.(BH) On that day the people of Beth Shemesh(BI) offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five rulers of the Philistines saw all this and then returned that same day to Ekron.

4 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
9 Be strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.
16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
6 And the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.
2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the Lord? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.
3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?
7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:
8 And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.
10 And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:
11 And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.
12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.
13 And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the Lord.
15 And the Levites took down the ark of the Lord, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the Lord.
16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.
