12 요나단이 다윗에게 말하였다. “내가 주 이스라엘의 하나님 앞에서 맹세하네. 내가 모레 이맘때까지는 아버님께서 자네를 어떻게 생각하시는지 아버님의 마음을 떠보겠네. 아버님께서 자네를 좋게 생각하신다면 내가 자네에게 알려 주겠네. 13 그러나 만일 내 아버님의 마음이 자네를 해치려는 쪽으로 기울어 있으면, 내가 자네에게 알려 주어서, 자네가 안전하게 피할 수 있도록 하겠네. 만일 내가 그 약속을 지키지 않는다면 주께서 나에게 심한 벌을 내리시기 바라네. 주께서 내 아버님과 함께 하셨던 것처럼 자네와 함께 하시기를 빌겠네. 14 내가 살아 있는 동안에는 주의 사랑과 같은 사랑을 내게 보여 주게나. 그러나 내가 죽거든, 15 주께서 자네 원수들을 한 사람도 남기지 않고 모조리 땅 위에서 끊어버리시더라도, 자네는 내 집안과 맺은 사랑의 인연을 끊어버리지 말아 주게.”
16 그리하여 요나단은 다윗 집안과 언약을 맺으며 이렇게 말하였다. “주께서 다윗의 원수를 멸하여 주시기를 바라네.” 17 그리고 요나단은 다윗에게 자기에 대한 사랑의 맹세를 다시 확인하게 하였다. 그는 다윗을 자신 만큼이나 사랑하였기 때문이었다.
18 그런 다음 요나단이 다윗에게 말하였다. “내일은 초하루 축제일이네. 아버님께서는 자네의 자리가 비어 있는 것을 보시면 자네가 어디에 있는지 궁금히 여기실 걸세. 19 자네는 모레 저녁때쯤 이 문제가 처음 발생했을 때 숨었던 곳으로 가서, 거기에 있는 에셀 바위 곁에서 기다리게. 20 그러면 내가 과녁을 향해 쏘는 것처럼 하면서 그 바위 옆으로 활을 세 번 쏘겠네. 21 그런 다음 ‘가서 화살을 찾아오너라.’ 하며 아이를 보내겠네. 내가 아이에게 ‘보라. 화살들이 네 안쪽에 있으니 주워서 이리로 가져 오너라.’ 하면 자네는 숨어 있던 곳에서 나오게. 주께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하지만 자네는 아무 일 없이 안전한 것이네. 22 그러나 내가 아이에게 ‘보라. 화살들이 네 너머에 있다.’ 하면 자네는 가야 하네. 주께서 자네를 멀리 보내시는 것이기 때문이네. 23 자네와 나 사이의 언약을 기억하게. 주께서 영원토록 자네와 나 사이의 증인이 되실 걸세.”

12 And Jonathan said unto David, O Lord God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee;
13 The Lord do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the Lord be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, that I die not:
15 But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the Lord hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David's enemies.
17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
18 Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.
19 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.
21 And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the Lord liveth.
22 But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the Lord hath sent thee away.
23 And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me for ever.
