I desire then that (A)in every place the men should pray, (B)lifting (C)holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also (D)that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 (E)but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly (F)with all submissiveness. 12 (G)I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 (H)For Adam was formed first, (I)then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but (J)the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through (K)childbearing—if they continue in (L)faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Qualifications for Overseers

The saying is (M)trustworthy: If anyone aspires to (N)the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore (O)an overseer[a] must be above reproach, (P)the husband of one wife,[b] (Q)sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, (R)hospitable, (S)able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but (T)gentle, not quarrelsome, (U)not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity (V)keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for (W)God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may (X)become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by (Y)outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into (Z)a snare of the devil.

Qualifications for Deacons

(AA)Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[c] (AB)not addicted to much wine, (AC)not greedy for dishonest gain. They must (AD)hold the mystery of the faith with (AE)a clear conscience. 10 And (AF)let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 (AG)Their wives likewise[d] must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, (AH)faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be (AI)the husband of one wife, (AJ)managing their children and their own households well. 13 For (AK)those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
