Guerra contro i Filistei; primo peccato di Saul
13 (B)Saul aveva trent’anni[a] quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò quarantadue anni sopra Israele.
2 Saul si scelse tremila uomini d’Israele: duemila stavano con lui a Micmas e sul monte di Betel e mille con Gionatan a Ghibea di Beniamino; rimandò invece il resto del popolo ognuno alla sua tenda. 3 Gionatan batté la guarnigione dei Filistei che stava a Gheba; e i Filistei lo seppero. Allora Saul suonò la tromba per tutto il paese e disse: «Lo sappiano gli Ebrei!» 4 E tutto Israele sentì dire: «Saul ha battuto la guarnigione dei Filistei e Israele si è reso odioso ai Filistei». Così il popolo fu convocato a Ghilgal per seguire Saul. 5 I Filistei si radunarono per combattere contro Israele; avevano trentamila carri, seimila cavalieri e gente numerosa come la sabbia che è sulla riva del mare. Salirono dunque e si accamparono a Micmas, a oriente di Bet-Aven. 6 Gli Israeliti, vedendosi ridotti a mal partito perché il popolo era messo alle strette, si nascosero nelle caverne, nelle macchie, tra le rocce, nelle buche e nelle cisterne. 7 Ci furono degli Ebrei che passarono il Giordano per andare nel paese di Gad e di Galaad. Quanto a Saul, egli era ancora a Ghilgal, e tutto il popolo che lo seguiva tremava.
8 Egli aspettò sette giorni, secondo il termine fissato da Samuele; ma Samuele non giungeva a Ghilgal e il popolo cominciò a disperdersi e ad abbandonarlo. 9 Allora Saul disse: «Portatemi l’olocausto e i sacrifici di riconoscenza»; e offrì l’olocausto. 10 Aveva appena finito di offrire l’olocausto, che arrivò Samuele; Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo. 11 Ma Samuele gli disse: «Che hai fatto?» Saul rispose: «Siccome vedevo che il popolo si disperdeva e mi abbandonava, che tu non giungevi nel giorno stabilito e che i Filistei erano radunati a Micmas, mi sono detto: 12 “Ora i Filistei mi piomberanno addosso a Ghilgal e io non ho ancora implorato il Signore!” Così mi sono fatto forza e ho offerto l’olocausto». 13 Allora Samuele disse a Saul: «Tu hai agito stoltamente; non hai osservato il comandamento che il Signore, il tuo Dio, ti aveva dato. Il Signore avrebbe stabilito il tuo regno sopra Israele per sempre. 14 Ora invece il tuo regno non durerà. Il Signore si è cercato un uomo secondo il suo cuore, e il Signore l’ha destinato a essere principe del suo popolo[b], poiché tu non hai osservato quello che il Signore t’aveva ordinato».
15 Poi Samuele partì da Ghilgal e andò a Ghibea di Beniamino, e Saul passò in rivista il popolo che si trovava con lui; erano circa seicento uomini.
16 Ora Saul, Gionatan suo figlio e la gente che si trovava con essi occupavano Ghibea di Beniamino, mentre i Filistei erano accampati a Micmas. 17 Dall’accampamento dei Filistei uscirono dei guastatori divisi in tre schiere: una prese la via di Ofra, verso il paese di Sual; 18 l’altra prese la via di Bet-Oron; la terza prese la via della frontiera che guarda la valle di Seboim, verso il deserto.
19 Allora in tutto il paese d’Israele non si trovava un fabbro; poiché i Filistei avevano detto: «Impediamo agli Ebrei di fabbricarsi spade o lance». 20 E tutti gli Israeliti scendevano dai Filistei per farsi affilare chi il suo vomere, chi la sua zappa, chi la sua scure, chi la sua vanga. 21 Il prezzo dell’arrotatura era di un pim per le vanghe, per le zappe, per i tridenti, per le scuri e per aggiustare i pungoli. 22 Così nel giorno della battaglia avvenne che in mano a tutta la gente che era con Saul e con Gionatan non si trovava né una spada né una lancia; se ne trovava soltanto in mano di Saul e di Gionatan suo figlio.
23 Intanto una guarnigione dei Filistei uscì a occupare il passo di Micmas.

Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice
13 Saul [a]reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, 2 Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in (A)Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a thousand were with (B)Jonathan in (C)Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent away, every man to his tent.
3 And Jonathan attacked (D)the garrison of the Philistines that was in (E)Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!” 4 Now all Israel heard it said that Saul had attacked a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel had also become [b]an abomination to the Philistines. And the people were called together to Saul at Gilgal.
5 Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, [c]thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people (F)as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of (G)Beth Aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people (H)hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits. 7 And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the (I)land of Gad and Gilead.
As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 8 (J)Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9 So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering. 10 Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might [d]greet him.
11 And Samuel said, “What have you done?”
Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, 12 then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”
13 And Samuel said to Saul, (K)“You have done foolishly. (L)You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 (M)But now your kingdom shall not continue. (N)The Lord has sought for Himself a man (O)after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have (P)not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
15 Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of [e]Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people present with him, (Q)about six hundred men.
No Weapons for the Army
16 Saul, Jonathan his son, and the people present with them remained in [f]Gibeah of Benjamin. But the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 Then raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned onto the road to (R)Ophrah, to the land of Shual, 18 another company turned to the road to (S)Beth Horon, and another company turned to the road of the border that overlooks the Valley of (T)Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19 Now (U)there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make swords or spears.” 20 But all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen each man’s plowshare, his mattock, his ax, and his sickle; 21 and the charge for a sharpening was a [g]pim for the plowshares, the mattocks, the forks, and the axes, and to set the points of the goads. 22 So it came about, on the day of battle, that (V)there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But they were found with Saul and Jonathan his son.
23 (W)And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.

2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.
5 And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.
6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
7 And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9 And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.
10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
12 Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.
13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.
15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.
16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:
18 And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
20 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.
21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

13 Saul lived for one year and then became king, and when he had reigned for two years over Israel,[a] 2 Saul chose three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in (A)Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in (B)Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent. 3 Jonathan defeated (C)the garrison of the Philistines that was (D)at Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul (E)blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.” 4 And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.
5 And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and troops (F)like the sand on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of (G)Beth-aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves (H)in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns, 7 and some Hebrews crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8 (I)He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. 9 So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering. 10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. 11 Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, 12 I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.” 13 And Samuel said to Saul, (J)“You have done foolishly. (K)You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now (L)your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man (M)after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince[b] over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” 15 And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal.
