5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and carried it from the Stone of help into Azotus.
2 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the temple of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when the Azotians arose early the next day, behold Dagon lay upon his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord: and they took Dagon, and set him again in his place.
4 And the next day again, when they rose in the morning, they found Dagon lying upon his face on the earth before the ark of the Lord: and the head of Dagon, and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold:
5 And only the stump of Dagon remained in its place. For this cause neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that go into the temple tread on the threshold of Dagon in Azotus unto this day.
6 And the hand of the Lord was heavy upon the Azotians, and he destroyed them, and afflicted Azotus and the coasts thereof with emerods. And in the villages and fields in the midst of that country, there came forth a multitude of mice, and there was the confusion of a great mortality in the city.
7 And the men of Azotus seeing this kind of plague, said: The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us: for his hand is heavy upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 And sending, they gathered together all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said: What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And the Gethrites answered: Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about.
9 And while they were carrying it about, the band of the Lord came upon every city with an exceeding great slaughter: and he smote the men of every city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts. And the Gethrites consulted together, and made themselves seats of skins.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God into Accaron. And when the ark of God was come into Accaron, the Accaronites cried out, saying: They have brought the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people.
11 They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines: and they said: Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return into its own place, and not kill us and our people.
12 For there was the fear of death in every city, and the hand of God was exceeding heavy. The men also that did not die, were afflicted with the emerods: and the cry of every city went up to heaven.

5 Filistenii au luat chivotul lui Dumnezeu şi l-au dus din Eben-Ezer(A) la Asdod. 2 După ce au pus mâna pe chivotul lui Dumnezeu, filistenii l-au dus în casa lui Dagon(B) (Zeul peşte) şi l-au aşezat lângă Dagon. 3 A doua zi, asdodenii, care se sculaseră dis-de-dimineaţă, au găsit pe Dagon întins(C) cu faţa la pământ înaintea chivotului Domnului. Au luat pe Dagon şi l-au pus(D) înapoi la locul lui. 4 Şi a doua zi, sculându-se dis-de-dimineaţă, au găsit pe Dagon întins cu faţa la pământ înaintea chivotului Domnului; capul(E) lui Dagon şi cele două mâini ale lui erau tăiate pe prag şi nu-i rămăsese decât trunchiul. 5 De aceea, până în ziua de azi, preoţii lui Dagon şi toţi cei ce intră(F) în casa lui Dagon, la Asdod, nu calcă pe prag.

6 Mâna(G) Domnului a apăsat asupra celor din Asdod şi i-a pustiit(H); i-a lovit cu bube(I) la şezut, atât în Asdod, cât şi în ţinutul lui. 7 Când au văzut că aşa stau lucrurile, oamenii din Asdod au zis: „Chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel să nu rămână la noi, căci mâna Lui apasă asupra noastră şi asupra lui Dagon, dumnezeul nostru.” 8 Şi au trimis şi au adunat la ei pe toţi domnitorii filistenilor şi au zis: „Ce să facem cu chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel?” Domnitorii au răspuns: „Să se ducă la Gat chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel.” Şi au adus acolo chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel. 9 Dar, după ce a fost dus acolo, mâna(J) Domnului a apăsat asupra cetăţii şi a fost o mare(K) groază; a lovit(L) pe oamenii cetăţii de la mic până la mare şi au avut o spuzeală de bube la şezut. 10 Atunci au trimis chivotul lui Dumnezeu la Ecron. Când a intrat chivotul lui Dumnezeu în Ecron, ecroniţii au strigat: „Au adus la noi chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel ca să ne omoare, pe noi şi poporul nostru.” 11 Şi au trimis şi au strâns pe toţi domnitorii filistenilor, şi au zis: „Trimiteţi înapoi chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel; să se întoarcă la locul lui, ca să nu ne omoare, pe noi şi poporul nostru.” Căci în toată cetatea era o groază de moarte, şi mâna(M) lui Dumnezeu apăsa cu putere. 12 Oamenii care nu mureau erau loviţi cu bube la şezut, şi ţipetele cetăţii se înălţau până la cer.

El cofre en manos de los filisteos
5 Los filisteos llevaron el cofre de Dios de Ebenezer a Asdod. 2 Lo llevaron al templo de Dagón y lo colocaron al lado de la estatua de ese dios. 3 A la mañana siguiente, cuando los habitantes de Asdod se levantaron, vieron que la estatua de Dagón estaba tirada en el suelo, boca abajo, frente al cofre del SEÑOR. Entonces la levantaron y la colocaron en su lugar. 4 Pero cuando se levantaron a la mañana siguiente, ¡otra vez encontraron la estatua tirada en el suelo frente al cofre del SEÑOR! Esta vez la cabeza y las manos de la estatua estaban quebradas, tiradas en el umbral. Lo único que quedaba entero era el cuerpo de la estatua. 5 Por eso, aun hoy en día, ni los sacerdotes de Dagón ni ninguna otra persona que entra en el templo de Dagón en Asdod pisan el umbral.
6 El SEÑOR les hizo la vida difícil al pueblo de Asdod y a sus vecinos. Les envió muchos problemas e hizo que les salieran tumores. También les envió ratones que anduvieron por todos sus barcos y luego se pasaron a su tierra. La gente de la ciudad tenía mucho miedo.[a] 7 El pueblo de Asdod vio lo que pasaba y dijo: «¡El cofre del Dios de Israel no puede quedarse aquí! Dios nos está castigando a nosotros y a nuestro dios Dagón».
8 El pueblo de Asdod convocó a los cinco gobernantes filisteos y les preguntó:
—¿Qué debemos hacer con el cofre del Dios de Israel?
Los gobernantes respondieron:
—Llévenlo a la ciudad de Gat.
Y así lo hicieron. 9 Pero cuando los filisteos llevaron el cofre de Dios a Gat, el SEÑOR castigó a esa ciudad y la gente se atemorizó. Dios envió muchos problemas a todo el pueblo, jóvenes y ancianos, e hizo que les salieran tumores. 10 Así que los filisteos enviaron el cofre de Dios a la ciudad de Ecrón, pero cuando el cofre llegó a esa ciudad, el pueblo de Ecrón empezó a quejarse gritando: «¿Por qué traen el cofre del Dios de Israel a nuestra ciudad de Ecrón? ¿Quieren matarnos a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo?» 11 El pueblo de Ecrón convocó a todos los gobernantes filisteos y les dijo: «Devuelvan el cofre del Dios de Israel a su lugar antes de que nos mate a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo».
Los habitantes de Ecrón tenían mucho miedo. Dios les hizo la vida imposible en ese lugar, 12 y a los que no murieron les salieron tumores. Los gritos del pueblo de Ecrón llegaban hasta el cielo.
