Israel, bătut de filisteni
4 Chemarea lui Samuel a ajuns la cunoştinţa întregului Israel. Israel a ieşit înaintea filistenilor ca să lupte împotriva lor. Au tăbărât lângă Eben-Ezer(A), şi filistenii tăbărâseră la Afec. 2 Filistenii s-au aşezat în linie de bătaie împotriva lui Israel şi lupta a început. Israel a fost bătut de filisteni, care au omorât pe câmpul de bătaie aproape patru mii de oameni. 3 Poporul s-a întors în tabără şi bătrânii lui Israel au zis: „Pentru ce ne-a lăsat Domnul să fim bătuţi astăzi de filisteni? Haidem să luăm de la Silo chivotul legământului Domnului, ca să vină în mijlocul nostru şi să ne izbăvească din mâna vrăjmaşilor noştri.” 4 Poporul a trimis la Silo, de unde au adus chivotul legământului Domnului oştirilor, care(B) şade între heruvimi(C). Cei doi fii ai lui Eli, Hofni şi Fineas, erau acolo, împreună cu chivotul legământului lui Dumnezeu. 5 Când a intrat chivotul legământului Domnului în tabără, tot Israelul a scos strigăte de bucurie de s-a cutremurat pământul. 6 Răsunetul acestor strigăte a fost auzit de filisteni şi au zis: „Ce înseamnă strigătele acestea care răsună în tabăra evreilor?” Şi au auzit că sosise chivotul Domnului în tabără. 7 Filistenii s-au temut, pentru că au crezut că Dumnezeu venise în tabără. „Vai de noi, au zis ei, căci n-a fost aşa ceva până acum! 8 Vai de noi! Cine ne va izbăvi din mâna acestor dumnezei puternici? Dumnezeii aceştia au lovit pe egipteni cu tot felul de urgii în pustie. 9 Întăriţi-vă(D) şi fiţi oameni, filistenilor, ca nu cumva să fiţi robi evreilor, cum v-au fost ei robi(E) vouă: fiţi oameni şi luptaţi!” 10 Filistenii au început lupta, şi Israel a fost bătut(F). Fiecare a fugit în cortul lui. Înfrângerea a fost foarte mare, şi din Israel au căzut treizeci de mii de oameni pedeştri. 11 Chivotul(G) lui Dumnezeu a fost luat, şi cei doi(H) fii ai lui Eli, Hofni şi Fineas, au murit. 12 Un om din Beniamin a alergat din tabăra de bătaie şi a venit la Silo(I) în aceeaşi zi cu hainele sfâşiate şi cu capul acoperit(J) cu ţărână. 13 Când a ajuns, Eli aştepta stând pe un scaun(K) lângă drum, căci inima îi era neliniştită pentru chivotul lui Dumnezeu. La intrarea lui în cetate, omul acesta a dat de veste, şi toată cetatea a strigat. 14 Eli, auzind aceste strigăte, a zis: „Ce înseamnă zarva aceasta?” Şi îndată, omul a venit şi a adus lui Eli vestea aceasta. 15 Şi Eli era în vârstă de nouăzeci şi opt de ani, avea ochii(L) întunecaţi şi nu mai putea să vadă. 16 Omul a zis lui Eli: „Vin de pe câmpul de bătaie şi din câmpul de bătaie am fugit astăzi”. Eli a zis: „Ce s-a întâmplat(M), fiule?” 17 Cel ce aducea vestea aceasta, ca răspuns, a zis: „Israel a fugit dinaintea filistenilor şi poporul a suferit o mare înfrângere, şi chiar cei doi fii ai tăi, Hofni şi Fineas, au murit şi chivotul Domnului a fost luat.” 18 Abia a pomenit de chivotul lui Dumnezeu, şi Eli a căzut de pe scaun pe spate, lângă poartă; şi-a rupt ceafa şi a murit, căci era om bătrân şi greu. El fusese judecător în Israel patruzeci de ani. 19 Noră-sa, nevasta lui Fineas, era însărcinată şi sta să nască. Când a auzit vestea despre luarea chivotului lui Dumnezeu, despre moartea socrului ei şi despre moartea bărbatului ei, s-a încovoiat şi a născut, căci au apucat-o durerile naşterii. 20 Când trăgea să moară, femeile(N) care erau lângă ea i-au zis: „Nu te teme, căci ai născut un fiu!” Dar ea n-a răspuns şi n-a luat seama la ce i se spunea. 21 A pus copilului numele I-Cabod(O) (Nu mai e slavă), zicând: „S-a dus slava(P) din Israel!” Spunea lucrul acesta din pricina luării chivotului lui Dumnezeu şi din pricina socrului şi bărbatului ei. 22 Ea a zis: „S-a dus slava din Israel, căci chivotul lui Dumnezeu este luat.”

Los filisteos derrotan a los israelitas
4 Las noticias acerca de Samuel se esparcieron por todo Israel. Elí era muy anciano y sus hijos seguían haciendo maldades ante el SEÑOR.[a]
En esos tiempos, los israelitas salieron a pelear contra los filisteos. Acamparon en Ebenezer, mientras los filisteos acamparon en Afec. 2 Los filisteos se prepararon para atacar a Israel, y empezó el combate. Derrotaron a los israelitas matando en la batalla alrededor de 4000 soldados del ejército de Israel. 3 Los soldados israelitas regresaron a su campamento. Los ancianos líderes de Israel preguntaban: «¿Por qué nos derrotó el SEÑOR ante los filisteos? Traigamos el cofre del pacto del SEÑOR desde Siló y llevémoslo a la batalla con nosotros para que nos salve de nuestros enemigos».
4 Así que la gente envió hombres a Siló para que trajeran el cofre del pacto del SEÑOR Todopoderoso. En la parte superior del cofre están los querubines. Estos son como el trono en el que Dios se sienta. Los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finés llegaron con el cofre.
5 Cuando el cofre del SEÑOR llegó al campamento, todos los israelitas gritaron tan fuerte que hicieron que la tierra retumbara. 6 Los filisteos oyeron el griterío, y se preguntaban: «¿A qué viene tanto alboroto en el campamento hebreo?»
Entonces los filisteos se enteraron que habían traído el cofre del SEÑOR al campamento de Israel. 7 Se atemorizaron y dijeron: «¡Han llegado los dioses a su campamento! ¡Pobres de nosotros porque nunca antes había sucedido esto! 8 ¡Pobres de nosotros! ¿Quién puede salvarnos de estos dioses poderosos? Estos son los mismos dioses que les mandaron a los egipcios esas plagas y esas terribles enfermedades.[b] 9 ¡Sean valientes, filisteos! ¡Peleen como hombres! Antes, los hebreos fueron esclavos nuestros. ¡Así que peleen como hombres o ustedes se convertirán en sus esclavos!»
10 Así que los filisteos pelearon muy duro y derrotaron a los israelitas, que corrían huyendo hacia sus carpas. Fue una derrota terrible para Israel, con una matanza de 30 000 soldados. 11 Los filisteos se apoderaron del cofre de Dios y mataron a Ofni y a Finés, los dos hijos de Elí.
12 Un hombre de la tribu de Benjamín salió huyendo del combate, rasgó sus vestidos y se echó polvo en la cabeza mostrando así su profunda tristeza. 13 Cuando llegó a Siló, Elí estaba sentado en su silla, observando cerca de la entrada de la ciudad, porque estaba preocupado por el cofre de Dios. Entonces el hombre de la tribu de Benjamín entró en la ciudad y dio las malas noticias y toda la gente empezó a gritar. 14 Al oír el griterío, Elí preguntó:
—¿Por qué tanto alboroto?
El hombre se apresuró a darle la noticia a Elí. 15 Elí tenía 98 años de edad y ya estaba completamente ciego.
16 —¡Vengo del combate, acabo de huir de la batalla!
Elí le preguntó:
—¿Qué pasó, hijo mío?
17 El hombre le contestó:
—Los israelitas huyeron de los filisteos y el ejército ha perdido muchos hombres. Tus dos hijos han muerto y los filisteos se apoderaron del cofre de Dios.
18 Al oír mencionar el cofre de Dios, Elí se fue de espaldas, cayéndose de la silla cerca de la entrada. Como ya era viejo y pasado de kilos, se quebró el cuello al caer y murió. Elí había dirigido a Israel durante 20 años.[c]
19 La nuera de Elí, esposa de Finés, estaba embarazada, a punto de dar a luz. Al oír la noticia de que se habían apoderado del cofre de Dios y de que su suegro y su esposo habían muerto, le vinieron los dolores y empezó el trabajo de parto. 20 Estaba a punto de morir por el difícil alumbramiento cuando las parteras que la atendían le dijeron: «Tranquila, has dado a luz un niño». Pero la nuera de Elí no contestó ni puso atención, 21 y le puso por nombre Icabod, que significa «¡Le han quitado la gloria a Israel!» Le puso este nombre porque se habían apoderado del cofre de Dios y porque tanto su suegro como su esposo habían muerto. 22 Ella dijo: «Le han quitado la gloria a Israel» porque los filisteos se habían apoderado del cofre de Dios.

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)
