Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. Nang magkagayo'y nakipagtipan si Jonathan kay David sapagkat kanyang minahal siya na gaya ng kanyang sariling kaluluwa.

Hinubad ni Jonathan ang balabal na nakasuot sa kanya at ibinigay kay David, pati ang kanyang baluti, tabak, busog, at pamigkis.

Lumabas si David at nagtagumpay saanman suguin ni Saul, kaya't inilagay siya ni Saul bilang pinuno ng mga lalaking mandirigma. Ito ay sinang-ayunan ng buong bayan, at gayundin ng mga lingkod ni Saul.
