Samuel Anoints David

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul,^(A) since I have rejected him as king over Israel?^(B) Fill your horn with oil^(C) and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem^(D) because I have selected for myself a king from his sons.”

¹² Now David was the son of the Ephrathite^(A) from Bethlehem of Judah named Jesse. Jesse had eight sons^(B) and during Saul’s reign was already an old man.

²⁷ When the time of mourning ended, David had her brought to his house. She became his wife and bore him a son. However, the Lord considered what David had done to be evil.^(A)

The Birth of Solomon

²⁴ Then David comforted^(A) his wife Bathsheba; he went to her and slept with her. She gave birth to a son and named^[a] him Solomon.^[b](B) The Lord loved him,
