A luat o pereche de boi, i-a tăiat în bucăţi şi a trimis bucăţile, prin mesageri, în toate teritoriile lui Israel, spunând: „Aşa se va face cu boii oricui nu îl urmează pe Saul şi pe Samuel.“ Groaza Domnului a intrat în popor, astfel că ei au ieşit la luptă ca un singur om. Când Saul i-a numărat la Bezek, din Israel erau trei sute de mii de bărbaţi, iar din Iuda erau treizeci de mii de bărbaţi. Atunci le-a zis mesagerilor care au venit: „Aşa să spuneţi bărbaţilor din Iabeş-Ghilad: «Mâine, când va dogori soarele, veţi fi izbăviţi!»“ Când au sosit mesagerii şi le-au spus aceste lucruri bărbaţilor din Iabeş, aceştia s-au bucurat.

So he took a yoke of oxen and (A)cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, (B)“Whoever does not go out with Saul and Samuel to battle, so it shall be done to his oxen.”

And the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out [a]with one consent. When he numbered them in (C)Bezek, the children (D)of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. And they said to the messengers who came, “Thus you shall say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have help.’ ” Then the messengers came and reported it to the men of Jabesh, and they were glad.
