Hannah’s Vow

1 There was a man from Ramathaim-zophim(A) in[a] the hill country of Ephraim.(B) His name was Elkanah(C) son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives,(D) the first named Hannah(E) and the second Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless. 3 This man would go up from his town every year(F) to worship and to sacrifice(G) to the Lord of Hosts at Shiloh,(H) where Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were the Lord’s priests.

4 Whenever Elkanah offered a sacrifice, he always gave portions of the meat(I) to his wife Peninnah and to each of her sons and daughters. 5 But he gave a double[b] portion(J) to Hannah, for he loved her even though the Lord had kept her from conceiving. 6 Her rival would taunt her severely just to provoke her, because the Lord had kept Hannah from conceiving. 7 Whenever she went up to the Lord’s house,(K) her rival taunted her in this way every year. Hannah wept and would not eat. 8 “Hannah, why are you crying?” her husband Elkanah asked. “Why won’t you eat? Why are you troubled? Am I not better to you than 10 sons?”(L)

9 Hannah got up after they ate and drank at Shiloh.[c] Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s tabernacle.(M) 10 Deeply hurt, Hannah prayed to the Lord and wept with many tears.(N) 11 Making a vow,(O) she pleaded, “Lord of Hosts, if You will take notice of Your servant’s affliction,(P) remember and not forget me, and give Your servant a son,[d] I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut.”[e](Q)

12 While she continued praying in the Lord’s presence, Eli watched her lips. 13 Hannah was praying silently,[f](R) and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and scolded her, “How long are you going to be drunk?(S) Get rid of your wine!”

15 “No, my lord,” Hannah replied. “I am a woman with a broken heart. I haven’t had any wine or beer; I’ve been pouring out my heart before the Lord.(T) 16 Don’t think of me as a wicked woman;(U) I’ve been praying from the depth of my anguish and resentment.”(V)

17 Eli responded, “Go in peace,(W) and may the God of Israel grant the petition you’ve requested from Him.”(X)

18 “May your servant find favor with you,”(Y) she replied. Then Hannah went on her way; she ate and no longer looked despondent.[g](Z)

Samuel’s Birth and Dedication

19 The next morning Elkanah and Hannah got up early to bow in worship before the Lord. Afterward, they returned home to Ramah.(AA) Then Elkanah was intimate with his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her.(AB) 20 After some time,[h] Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,[i] because she said, “I requested him from the Lord.”

21 When Elkanah and all his household went up to make the annual sacrifice(AC) and his vow offering to the Lord, 22 Hannah did not go and explained to her husband, “After the child is weaned, I’ll take him to appear in the Lord’s presence(AD) and to stay there permanently.”(AE)

23 Her husband Elkanah replied, “Do what you think is best,[j](AF) and stay here until you’ve weaned him. May the Lord confirm your[k] word.”(AG) So Hannah stayed there and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 When she had weaned him, she took him with her to Shiloh, as well as a three-year-old bull,[l] half a bushel[m] of flour, and a jar of wine.(AH) Though the boy was still young,[n] she took him to the Lord’s house at Shiloh.(AI) 25 Then they slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli.

26 “Please, my lord,” she said, “as sure as you live,(AJ) my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this boy,(AK) and since the Lord gave me what I asked Him for,(AL) 28 I now give the boy to the Lord. For as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.”(AM) Then he[o] bowed in worship to the Lord there.[p]

1 Había un hombre de Ramataim de Zofim(A), de la región montañosa de Efraín(B), que se llamaba Elcana, hijo de Jeroham(C), hijo de Eliú, hijo de Tohu, hijo de Zuf, efrateo. 2 Y tenía dos mujeres(D): el nombre de una era Ana(E) y el[a] de la otra Penina; y Penina tenía hijos, pero Ana no los tenía[b]. 3 Este hombre subía todos los años(F) de su ciudad para adorar y ofrecer sacrificio al Señor de los ejércitos(G) en Silo(H). Y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, eran sacerdotes del Señor allí. 4 Cuando llegaba el día en que Elcana ofrecía sacrificio, daba porciones a Penina su mujer y a todos sus hijos e hijas(I); 5 pero a Ana le daba una doble porción, pues él amaba a Ana, aunque el Señor no le había dado hijos[c](J). 6 Y su rival la provocaba amargamente para irritarla, porque el Señor no le había dado hijos[d](K). 7 Esto sucedía año tras año; siempre que ella subía a la casa del Señor, la otra[e] la provocaba. Y Ana lloraba y no comía. 8 Entonces Elcana su marido le dijo: Ana, ¿por qué lloras y no comes? ¿Por qué está triste tu corazón? ¿No soy yo para ti mejor que diez hijos(L)?

9 Pero Ana se levantó después de haber comido y bebido en Silo, y mientras el sacerdote Elí estaba sentado en la silla junto al poste de la puerta del templo del Señor(M), 10 ella, muy angustiada[f], oraba al Señor y lloraba amargamente. 11 E hizo voto(N) y dijo: Oh Señor de los ejércitos, si tú te dignas mirar la aflicción de tu sierva(O), te acuerdas de mí y no te olvidas de tu sierva, sino que das un hijo[g] a tu sierva, yo lo dedicaré al Señor por todos los días de su vida y nunca pasará navaja sobre su cabeza(P).

12 Y[h] mientras ella continuaba en[i] oración delante del Señor, Elí le estaba observando la boca. 13 Pero Ana hablaba en su corazón(Q), solo sus labios se movían y su voz no se oía. Elí, pues, pensó que estaba ebria. 14 Entonces Elí le dijo: ¿Hasta cuándo estarás embriagada(R)? Echa de ti tu vino. 15 Pero Ana respondió y dijo: No, señor mío, soy una mujer angustiada[j] en espíritu; no he bebido vino ni licor, sino que he derramado mi alma delante del Señor(S). 16 No tengas[k] a tu sierva por mujer indigna[l]; porque hasta ahora he orado[m] a causa de mi gran congoja y aflicción[n]. 17 Respondió Elí y dijo: Ve en paz(T); y que el Dios de Israel te conceda la petición que le has hecho[o](U). 18 Y ella dijo: Halle tu sierva gracia ante tus ojos(V). Y la mujer se puso en camino, comió y ya no estaba triste su semblante(W).

Nacimiento y dedicación de Samuel

19 Y se levantaron de mañana, adoraron delante del Señor y regresaron[p] de nuevo a su casa en Ramá(X). Y Elcana se llegó a[q] Ana su mujer, y el Señor se acordó de ella(Y). 20 Y[r] a su debido tiempo[s], después de haber concebido, Ana dio a luz un hijo, y le puso por nombre Samuel[t], diciendo: Porque se lo he pedido al Señor(Z).

21 Subió el varón Elcana con toda su casa a ofrecer al Señor el sacrificio anual y a pagar su voto(AA), 22 pero Ana no subió, pues dijo a su marido: No subiré hasta que el niño sea destetado; entonces lo llevaré para que se presente delante del Señor(AB) y se quede allí para siempre(AC). 23 Y Elcana su marido(AD) le dijo: Haz lo que mejor te parezca[u]. Quédate hasta que lo hayas destetado; solamente confirme el Señor su palabra(AE). La mujer se quedó y crió a su hijo hasta que lo destetó. 24 Después de haberlo destetado, lo llevó consigo, con un novillo de tres años[v], un efa[w] de harina y un odre de vino(AF), y lo trajo a la casa del Señor en Silo(AG), aunque el niño era pequeño. 25 Entonces sacrificaron el novillo(AH), y trajeron el niño a Elí(AI). 26 Y ella dijo: ¡Oh señor mío! Vive tu alma(AJ), señor mío, yo soy la mujer que estuvo aquí junto a ti orando al Señor. 27 Por este niño oraba, y el Señor me ha concedido la petición que le hice[x](AK). 28 Por lo cual yo también lo he dedicado[y] al Señor; todos los días de su vida estará dedicado[z](AL) al Señor. Y adoró[aa] allí al Señor(AM).

The Birth of Samuel

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)”

9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)”

18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

Hannah Dedicates Samuel

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]

23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
