^49 (A)The sons of Saul were Jonathan, ^[a]Jishui, and Malchishua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger ^(B)Michal.

^33 (A)Ner^[a] begot Kish, Kish begot Saul, and Saul begot Jonathan, Malchishua, ^[b]Abinadab, and ^[c]Esh-Baal.

² Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed ^(A)Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

^39 (A)Ner begot Kish, Kish begot Saul, and Saul begot Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Esh-Baal.

^20 (A)Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, ^(B)uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the ^(C)base fellows ^[a]shamelessly uncovers himself!”

²¹ So David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, ^(D)who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the ^(E)people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. ²² And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.”

²³ Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children ^(F)to the day of her death.

¹³ And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: ^(A)you shall not see my face unless you first bring ^(B)Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.” ¹⁴ So David sent messengers to ^(C)Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, saying, “Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself ^(D)for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.” ¹⁵ And Ishbosheth sent and took her from her husband, from ^[a]Paltiel the son of Laish. ¹⁶ Then her husband went along with her to ^(E)Bahurim, ^[b]weeping behind her. So Abner said to him, “Go, return!” And he returned.

⁴⁴ But Saul had given ^(A)Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to ^[a]Palti the son of Laish, who was from ^(B)Gallim.

⁷ So the women ^(A)sang as they danced, and said:

⁸ Then Saul was very angry, and the saying ^(C)displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but ^(D)the kingdom?” ⁹ So Saul ^[a]eyed David from that day forward.

¹⁰ And it happened on the next day that ^(E)the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, ^(F)and he prophesied inside the house. So David ^(G)played music with his hand, as at other times; ^(H)but there was a spear in Saul’s hand. ¹¹ And Saul ^(I)cast the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” But David escaped his presence twice.

¹² Now Saul was ^(J)afraid of David, because ^(K)the Lord was with him, but had ^(L)departed from Saul. ¹³ Therefore Saul removed him from ^[b]his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and ^(M)he went out and came in before the people. ¹⁴ And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and ^(N)the Lord was with him. ¹⁵ Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him. ¹⁶ But ^(O)all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

David Marries Michal

¹⁷ Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab; ^(P)I will give her to you as a wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight ^(Q)the Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, ^(R)“Let my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”

¹⁸ So David said to Saul, ^(S)“Who am I, and what is my life or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” ¹⁹ But it happened at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to ^(T)Adriel the ^(U)Meholathite as a wife.

^20 (V)Now Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. ²¹ So Saul said, “I will give her to him, that she may ^[c]be a snare to him, and that ^(W)the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, ^(X)“You shall be my son-in-law today.”
