13-14 Entonces Roboán les respondió duramente, ignorando el consejo de los ancianos y siguiendo el de los jóvenes. Les dijo: «Si mi padre fue recio, yo seré aún más recio. Si mi padre los azotó con látigos, yo usaré escorpiones». 15 De modo que Roboán no tuvo en cuenta las peticiones del pueblo. Esto estaba de acuerdo con la voluntad del Señor, y de esta forma se cumplió lo que él le había prometido a Jeroboán por medio de Ahías, el profeta de Siló.

13 Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, dejando el consejo que los ancianos le habían dado; 14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones. 15 Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era designio de Jehová para confirmar la palabra que Jehová había hablado por medio de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.

13 The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged(A) you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord,(B) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah(C) the Shilonite.

13 The king responded to the people harshly. He rejected the advice of the older men 14 and followed[a] the advice of the younger ones. He said, “My father imposed heavy demands on you; I will make them even heavier.[b] My father punished you with ordinary whips; I will punish you with whips that really sting your flesh.”[c] 15 The king refused to listen to the people, because the Lord was instigating this turn of events[d] so that he might bring to pass the prophetic announcement he had made[e] through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
