Chapter 4

Christian Restraint.[a] Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same attitude (for whoever suffers in the flesh has broken with sin), so as not to spend what remains of one’s life in the flesh on human desires, but on the will of God. For the time that has passed is sufficient for doing what the Gentiles like to do: living in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and wanton idolatry.(A) They are surprised that you do not plunge into the same swamp of profligacy, and they vilify you; but they will give an account to him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.(B) For this is why the gospel was preached even to the dead[b] that, though condemned in the flesh in human estimation, they might live in the spirit in the estimation of God.

Christian Charity.[c] The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be serious and sober for prayers. (C)Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins.[d] Be hospitable to one another without complaining.(D) 10 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.(E) 11 Whoever preaches, let it be with the words of God; whoever serves, let it be with the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,(F) to whom belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.[e]

IV. Advice to the Persecuted

Trial of Persecution.[f] 12 Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as if something strange were happening to you.(G) 13 But rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly.(H) 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.(I) 15 But let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as an intriguer. 16 But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name. 17 For it is time for the judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, how will it end for those who fail to obey the gospel of God?(J)

18 “And if the righteous one is barely saved,
    where will the godless and the sinner appear?”(K)

19 As a result, those who suffer in accord with God’s will hand their souls over to a faithful creator as they do good.

  1. 4:1–6 Willingness to suffer with Christ equips the Christian with the power to conquer sin (1 Pt 4:1). Christ is here portrayed as the judge to whom those guilty of pagan vices must render an account (1 Pt 4:5; cf. Jn 5:22–27; Acts 10:42; 2 Tm 4:1).
  2. 4:6 The dead: these may be the sinners of the flood generation who are possibly referred to in 1 Pt 3:19. But many scholars think that there is no connection between these two verses, and that the dead here are Christians who have died since hearing the preaching of the gospel.
  3. 4:7–11 The inner life of the eschatological community is outlined as the end (the parousia of Christ) and the judgment draws near in terms of seriousness, sobriety, prayer, and love expressed through hospitality and the use of one’s gifts for the glory of God and of Christ.
  4. 4:8 Love covers a multitude of sins: a maxim based on Prv 10:12; see also Ps 32:1; Jas 5:20.
  5. 4:11 Some scholars feel that this doxology concludes the part of the homily addressed specifically to the newly baptized, begun in 1 Pt 1:3; others that it concludes a baptismal liturgy. Such doxologies do occur within a New Testament letter, e.g., Rom 9:5. Some propose that 1 Pt 4:11 was an alternate ending, with 1 Pt 4:12–5:14 being read in places where persecution was more pressing. But such doxologies usually do not occur at the end of letters (the only examples are 2 Pt 3:18, Jude 25, and Rom 16:27, the last probably a liturgical insertion).
  6. 4:12–19 The suffering to which the author has already frequently referred is presented in more severe terms. This has led some scholars to see these verses as referring to an actual persecution. Others see the heightening of the language as only a rhetorical device used at the end of the letter to emphasize the suffering motif.

Astfel dar, fiindcă Hristos(A) a pătimit în trup, înarmaţi-vă şi voi cu acelaşi fel de gândire. Căci Cel(B) ce a pătimit în trup a sfârşit-o cu păcatul; pentru ca(C), în vremea care-i mai rămâne de trăit în trup, să nu mai trăiască(D) după poftele oamenilor, ci(E) după voia lui Dumnezeu. Ajunge(F), în adevăr, că în trecut aţi(G) făcut voia neamurilor şi aţi trăit în desfrânări, în pofte, în beţii, în ospeţe, în chefuri şi în slujiri idoleşti neîngăduite. Căci tocmai în vederea aceasta a fost vestită(J) Evanghelia şi celor morţi, pentru ca să fie judecaţi ca oameni în trup, dar să trăiască după Dumnezeu în duh. Sfârşitul(K) tuturor lucrurilor este aproape. Fiţi(L) înţelepţi dar şi vegheaţi în vederea rugăciunii. Mai(M) presus de toate, să aveţi o dragoste fierbinte unii pentru alţii, căci(N) dragostea acoperă o sumedenie de păcate. Fiţi(O) primitori de oaspeţi între voi, fără(P) cârtire. 10 Ca nişte(Q) buni ispravnici ai harului felurit al lui Dumnezeu, fiecare din voi(R) să slujească altora după darul(S) pe care l-a primit. 11 Dacă(T) vorbeşte cineva, să vorbească cuvintele lui Dumnezeu. Dacă(U) slujeşte cineva, să slujească după puterea pe care i-o dă Dumnezeu, pentru ca în(V) toate lucrurile să fie slăvit Dumnezeu prin Isus Hristos, ale căruia(W) sunt slava şi puterea în vecii vecilor! Amin. 12 Preaiubiţilor, nu vă miraţi de încercarea(X) de foc din mijlocul vostru, care a venit peste voi ca să vă încerce, ca de ceva ciudat, care a dat peste voi, 13 dimpotrivă(Y), bucuraţi-vă întrucât aveţi parte(Z) de patimile lui Hristos, ca(AA) să vă bucuraţi şi să vă veseliţi şi la arătarea slavei Lui. 14 Dacă(AB) sunteţi batjocoriţi pentru Numele lui Hristos, ferice de voi! Fiindcă Duhul slavei, Duhul lui Dumnezeu, Se odihneşte peste voi(AC). 15 Nimeni(AD) din voi să nu sufere ca ucigaş sau ca hoţ, sau ca făcător de rele, sau(AE) ca unul care se amestecă în treburile altuia. 16 Dimpotrivă, dacă suferă pentru că este creştin, să nu-i fie ruşine, ci(AF) să proslăvească pe Dumnezeu pentru numele acesta. 17 Căci suntem în clipa când(AG) judecata stă să înceapă de la casa lui Dumnezeu. Şi, dacă(AH) începe cu noi, care(AI) va fi sfârşitul celor ce nu ascultă de Evanghelia lui Dumnezeu? 18 Şi(AJ), dacă cel neprihănit scapă cu greu, ce se vor face cel nelegiuit şi cel păcătos? 19 Aşa că cei ce suferă după voia lui Dumnezeu să-şi(AK) încredinţeze sufletele credinciosului Ziditor şi să facă ce este bine.

Living for God

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body,(A) arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.(B) As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires,(C) but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past(D) doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.(E) They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.(F) But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.(G) For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,(H) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near.(I) Therefore be alert and of sober mind(J) so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply,(K) because love covers over a multitude of sins.(L) Offer hospitality(M) to one another without grumbling.(N) 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,(O) as faithful(P) stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.(Q) If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,(R) so that in all things God may be praised(S) through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.(T)

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you(U) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice(V) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,(W) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.(X) 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,(Y) you are blessed,(Z) for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.(AA) 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;(AB) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?(AC) 18 And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
    what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[a](AD)

19 So then, those who suffer according to God’s will(AE) should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
