²Mo te wa e toe nei o te noho ki te kikokiko kia kaua i runga i nga hiahia o te tangata, engari i ta te Atua i pai ai.

³Kati hoki ma tatou ko te wahi o to tatou ora kua pahemo nei, hei mahinga ma tatou i ta nga tauiwi i pai ai, i a tatou i haere i runga i te hiahia taikaha, i nga minamina, i te haurangi waina, i te kakai, i te inu, i te karakia whakarihariha ki ng a whakapakoko:

Living for God

4 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body,^(A) arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.^(B) ²As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires,^(C) but rather for the will of God. ³For you have spent enough time in the past^(D) doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.^(E) ⁴They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.^(F) ⁵But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.^(G) ⁶For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,^(H) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

⁷The end of all things is near.^(I) Therefore be alert and of sober mind^(J) so that you may pray. ⁸Above all, love each other deeply,^(K) because love covers over a multitude of sins.^(L) ⁹Offer hospitality^(M) to one another without grumbling.^(N) ¹⁰Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,^(O) as faithful^(P) stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. ¹¹If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.^(Q) If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,^(R) so that in all things God may be praised^(S) through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.^(T)

Suffering for Being a Christian

¹²Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you^(U) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. ¹³But rejoice^(V) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,^(W) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.^(X) ¹⁴If you are insulted because of the name of Christ,^(Y) you are blessed,^(Z) for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. ¹⁵If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. ¹⁶However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.^(AA) ¹⁷For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household;^(AB) and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?^(AC) ¹⁸And,

“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved,
what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”^[a]^(AD)

¹⁹So then, those who suffer according to God’s will^(AE) should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.

Christ’s Example to Be Followed

4 Therefore, since Christ suffered ^[a]for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, ²that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, ^(A)but for the will of God. ³For we have spent enough of our past ^[b]lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. ⁴In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. ⁵They will give an account to Him who is ready ^(B)to judge the living and the dead. ⁶For this reason ^(C)the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but ^(D)live according to God in the spirit.

Serving for God’s Glory

⁷But ^(E)the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. ⁸And above all things have fervent love for one another, for ^(F)“love will cover a multitude of sins.” ⁹^(G)Be hospitable to one another ^(H)without grumbling. ¹⁰^(I)As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, ^(J)as good stewards of ^(K)the manifold grace of God. ¹¹^(L)If anyone speaks, let him speak as the ^[c]oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that ^(M)in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the ^[d]dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Suffering for God’s Glory

¹²Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; ¹³but rejoice ^(N)to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that ^(O)when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. ¹⁴If you are ^[e]reproached for the name of Christ, ^(P)blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. ^[f]On their part He is blasphemed, ^(Q)but on your part He is glorified. ¹⁵But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a ^[g]busybody in other people’s matters. ¹⁶Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this ^[h]matter.

¹⁷For the time has come ^(R)for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, ^(S)what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? ¹⁸Now

^(T)“If the righteous one is scarcely saved,
Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”

¹⁹Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God ^(U)commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.

Stewards of God's Grace

4 Since therefore ^(A)Christ suffered in the flesh,^[a] ^(B)arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for ^(C)whoever has suffered in the flesh ^(D)has ceased from sin, ²^(E)so as to live for ^(F)the rest of the time in the flesh ^(G)no longer for human passions but ^(H)for the will of God. ³For the time that is past ^(I)suffices ^(J)for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. ⁴With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of ^(K)debauchery, and ^(L)they malign you; ⁵but they will give account to him who is ready ^(M)to judge the living and the dead. ⁶For this is why ^(N)the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
