2 So be done with every trace of wickedness (depravity, malignity) and all deceit and insincerity (pretense, hypocrisy) and grudges (envy, jealousy) and slander and evil speaking of every kind.
2 Like newborn babies you should crave (thirst for, earnestly desire) the pure (unadulterated) spiritual milk, that by it you may be nurtured and grow unto [completed] salvation,
3 Since you have [already] tasted the goodness and kindness of the Lord.(A)
4 Come to Him [then, to that] Living Stone which men [a]tried and threw away, but which is chosen [and] precious in God’s sight.(B)
5 [Come] and, like living stones, be yourselves built [into] a spiritual house, for a holy (dedicated, consecrated) priesthood, to offer up [those] spiritual sacrifices [that are] acceptable and pleasing to God through Jesus Christ.
6 For thus it stands in Scripture: Behold, I am laying in Zion a chosen ([b]honored), precious chief Cornerstone, and he who believes in Him [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him] shall never be [c]disappointed or put to shame.(C)
7 To you then who believe (who adhere to, trust in, and rely on Him) is the preciousness; but for those who disbelieve [it is true], The [very] Stone which the builders rejected has become the main Cornerstone,(D)
8 And, A Stone that will cause stumbling and a Rock that will give [men] offense; they stumble because they disobey and disbelieve [God’s] Word, as those [who reject Him] were destined (appointed) to do.
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own [d]purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.(E)
10 Once you were not a people [at all], but now you are God’s people; once you were unpitied, but now you are pitied and have received mercy.(F)
11 Beloved, I implore you as aliens and strangers and exiles [in this world] to abstain from the sensual urges (the evil desires, the passions of the flesh, your lower nature) that wage war against the soul.
12 Conduct yourselves properly (honorably, righteously) among the Gentiles, so that, although they may slander you as evildoers, [yet] they may by witnessing your good deeds [come to] glorify God in the day of inspection [[e]when God shall look upon you wanderers as a pastor or shepherd looks over his flock].
13 Be submissive to every human institution and authority for the sake of the Lord, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,
14 Or to governors as sent by him to bring vengeance (punishment, justice) to those who do wrong and to encourage those who do good service.
15 For it is God’s will and intention that by doing right [your good and honest lives] should silence (muzzle, gag) the ignorant charges and ill-informed criticisms of foolish persons.
16 [Live] as free people, [yet] without employing your freedom as a pretext for wickedness; but [live at all times] as servants of God.
17 Show respect for all men [treat them honorably]. Love the brotherhood (the Christian fraternity of which Christ is the Head). Reverence God. Honor the emperor.
18 [You who are] household servants, be submissive to your masters with all [proper] respect, not only to those who are kind and considerate and reasonable, but also to those who are surly (overbearing, unjust, and crooked).
19 For one is regarded favorably (is approved, acceptable, and thankworthy) if, as in the sight of God, he endures the pain of unjust suffering.
20 [After all] what [f]kind of glory [is there in it] if, when you do wrong and are punished for it, you take it patiently? But if you bear patiently with suffering [which results] when you do right and that is undeserved, it is acceptable and pleasing to God.
21 For even to this were you called [it is inseparable from your vocation]. For Christ also suffered for you, leaving you [His personal] example, so that you should follow in His footsteps.
22 He was guilty of no sin, neither was deceit (guile) ever found on His lips.(G)
23 When He was reviled and insulted, He did not revile or offer insult in return; [when] He was abused and suffered, He made no threats [of vengeance]; but he trusted [Himself and everything] to Him Who judges fairly.
24 He personally bore our sins in His [own] body on the tree [g][as on an altar and offered Himself on it], that we might die (cease to exist) to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.
25 For you were going astray like [so many] sheep, but now you have come back to the Shepherd and Guardian ([h]the Bishop) of your souls.(H)

Ang Batong Buháy at ang Bansang Banal
2 Kaya't iwaksi ninyo ang lahat ng kasamaan, pandaraya, pagkukunwari, inggitan, at lahat ng paninirang-puri.
2 Gaya ng mga sanggol na bagong silang ay mithiin ninyo ang malinis na espirituwal na gatas, upang sa pamamagitan nito'y lumago kayo tungo sa kaligtasan,
3 kung(A) natikman nga ninyo na ang Panginoon ay mabuti.
4 Lumapit kayo sa kanya, na isang batong buháy, bagaman itinakuwil ng mga tao gayunma'y pinili at mahalaga sa paningin ng Diyos, at
5 tulad ng mga batong buháy, hayaan ninyong kayo ay maitayo bilang espirituwal na bahay tungo sa banal na pagkapari, upang mag-alay ng mga espirituwal na handog na kasiya-siya sa Diyos sa pamamagitan ni Jesu-Cristo.
6 Sapagkat(B) ito ang isinasaad ng kasulatan:
“Tingnan ninyo, aking inilalagay sa Zion ang isang bato,
isang batong panulok na pinili at mahalaga;
at sinumang sumasampalataya sa kanya ay hindi mapapahiya.”
7 Kaya't(C) sa inyo na nananampalataya, siya'y mahalaga; subalit sa mga hindi nananampalataya,
“Ang batong itinakuwil ng mga tagapagtayo ng bahay
ay siyang naging puno ng panulok,”
8 at,(D)
“Isang batong nagpapatisod sa kanila,
at malaking bato na nagpabagsak sa kanila.”
Sila'y natitisod dahil sa pagsuway sa salita, na dito naman sila itinalaga.
9 Ngunit(E) kayo'y isang lahing pinili, isang maharlikang pagkapari, isang bansang banal, sambayanang pag-aari ng Diyos, upang inyong ipahayag ang mga makapangyarihang gawa niya na tumawag sa inyo mula sa kadiliman, tungo sa kanyang kagila-gilalas na liwanag.
10 Noon(F) ay hindi kayo bayan, ngunit ngayo'y bayan kayo ng Diyos; noon ay hindi kayo tumanggap ng habag, ngunit ngayo'y tumanggap kayo ng habag.
Mamuhay Bilang mga Lingkod ng Diyos
11 Mga minamahal, ipinapakiusap ko sa inyo bilang mga dayuhan at ipinatapon, na kayo'y umiwas sa mga pagnanasa ng laman na nakikipaglaban sa kaluluwa.
12 Maging marangal ang inyong pag-uugali sa gitna ng mga Hentil upang kung magsalita sila laban sa inyo na parang kayo'y gumagawa ng kasamaan, ay makita nila ang inyong mabubuting gawa at luwalhatiin nila ang Diyos sa araw ng pagdalaw.
13 Pasakop kayo sa bawat pamahalaan ng tao alang-alang sa Panginoon, maging sa hari, na kataas-taasan,
14 o sa mga gobernador na sinugo niya upang parusahan ang mga gumagawa ng masama at parangalan ang mga gumagawa ng mabuti.
15 Sapagkat gayon ang kalooban ng Diyos na dahil sa paggawa ng mabuti ay inyong mapatahimik ang kamangmangan ng mga taong hangal.
16 Mamuhay kayo nang tulad sa taong malalaya, ngunit huwag ninyong gamitin ang kalayaan bilang balabal ng kasamaan, kundi bilang mga alipin ng Diyos.
17 Igalang ninyo ang lahat ng mga tao. Ibigin ninyo ang kapatiran. Matakot kayo sa Diyos. Igalang ninyo ang hari.
Ang Halimbawa ng Paghihirap ni Cristo
18 Mga alipin, magpasakop kayo nang may buong paggalang sa inyong mga amo; hindi lamang sa mabubuti at mahihinahon, kundi gayundin sa mababagsik.
19 Sapagkat ito'y kapuri-puri, kung dahil sa pagkakilala sa Diyos ay nagtiis ang sinuman ng sakit habang nagdurusa nang hindi nararapat.
20 Sapagkat anong pakinabang nga, na kapag kayo'y nagkakasala at hinahampas dahil dito, ay inyong tinatanggap na may pagtitiis? Ngunit kung kayo'y gumagawa ng mabuti at kayo'y nagdurusa dahil dito at inyong tinatanggap na may pagtitiis, ito'y kalugud-lugod sa Diyos.
21 Sapagkat ukol dito kayo'y tinawag, sapagkat si Cristo man ay nagdusa alang-alang sa inyo, na kayo'y iniwanan ng halimbawa, upang sumunod kayo sa kanyang mga yapak.
22 “Siya'y(G) hindi nagkasala, at walang natagpuang pandaraya sa kanyang bibig.”
23 Nang(H) siya'y alipustain, hindi siya gumanti; nang siya'y magdusa, hindi siya nagbanta, kundi ipinagkatiwala ang kanyang sarili doon sa humahatol na may katarungan.
24 Siya(I) mismo ang nagdala ng ating mga kasalanan sa kanyang katawan sa punungkahoy, upang tayo'y mamatay sa mga kasalanan at mabuhay sa katuwiran; dahil sa kanyang mga sugat ay gumaling kayo.
25 Sapagkat kayo'y tulad sa mga tupang naliligaw, ngunit ngayon ay bumalik na kayo sa Pastol at Tagapag-alaga ng inyong mga kaluluwa.

4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

2 Therefore, rid yourselves(A) of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander(B) of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(C) so that by it you may grow up(D) in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(E)
The Living Stone and a Chosen People
4 As you come to him, the living Stone(F)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(G) and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built(H) into a spiritual house[a](I) to be a holy priesthood,(J) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(K) 6 For in Scripture it says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,(L)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[b](M)
7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(N)
8 and,
They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(R)
9 But you are a chosen people,(S) a royal priesthood,(T) a holy nation,(U) God’s special possession,(V) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(W) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(X) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society
11 Dear friends,(Y) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,(Z) to abstain from sinful desires,(AA) which wage war against your soul.(AB) 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds(AC) and glorify God(AD) on the day he visits us.
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority:(AE) whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong(AF) and to commend those who do right.(AG) 15 For it is God’s will(AH) that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.(AI) 16 Live as free people,(AJ) but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil;(AK) live as God’s slaves.(AL) 17 Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers,(AM) fear God, honor the emperor.(AN)
18 Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters,(AO) not only to those who are good and considerate,(AP) but also to those who are harsh. 19 For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.(AQ) 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.(AR) 21 To this(AS) you were called,(AT) because Christ suffered for you,(AU) leaving you an example,(AV) that you should follow in his steps.
23 When they hurled their insults at him,(AY) he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.(AZ) Instead, he entrusted himself(BA) to him who judges justly.(BB) 24 “He himself bore our sins”(BC) in his body on the cross,(BD) so that we might die to sins(BE) and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”(BF) 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,”[f](BG) but now you have returned to the Shepherd(BH) and Overseer of your souls.(BI)
