Adonia försöker ta makten
1-2 När kung David var gammal var han frusen av sig och blev inte varm hur många filtar man än bredde över honom.
3-4 Man sökte över hela landet för att få tag i en ung, vacker och lämplig flicka, och slutligen fann man Abisag från Sunem, som fördes till kungen. Hon var mycket vacker, och hon tog hand om kungen och passade upp på honom, men kungen hade inget intimt umgänge med henne.
5 Samtidigt lät Davids son Adonia, vars mor hette Haggit, att utropa sig till kung i stället för sin åldrige far. Han skaffade sig vagnar och ryttare och femtio män att springa före vagnen.
6 Hans far hade aldrig velat gå till rätta med honom och fråga vad han menade med detta. Adonia såg mycket bra ut, och han var Absaloms yngre bror.
7 Han fick med sig Joab, överbefälhavaren, och prästen Ebjatar, och de lovade att hjälpa honom till makten.
8 Men bland dem som fortsatte att vara trogna mot kung David och vägrade acceptera Adonia fanns prästen Sadok och Benaja, Jojadas son, profeten Natan, Simei, Rei och Davids hjältar.
9 Adonia begav sig till Rogelskällan, där han offrade får, tjurar och gödkalvar vid Soheletstenen. Därefter kallade han samman alla sina bröder, kungens söner och alla de män i Juda som var i kungens tjänst.
10 Men han inbjöd inte profeten Natan, Benaja, Davids hjältar och sin bror Salomo.
11 Då gick profeten Natan till Salomos mor, Bat-Seba, och frågade henne: Känner du till att Haggits son Adonia nu är kung och att vår herre David inte ens vet om det?
12 Om du vill rädda ditt eget och din son Salomos liv, så ska du göra det jag säger till dig!
13 Du ska genast gå till kung David och fråga honom: 'Min herre, har du inte lovat mig att min son Salomo ska bli kung efter dig och sitta på din tron? Hur kan det då komma sig att Adonia regerar nu?'
14 Medan du talar med honom ska jag komma in och bekräfta allt du säger.
15 Bat-Seba gick till den gamle kungen i hans rum där Abisag skötte om honom.
16 Bat-Seba bugade sig djupt för honom och böjde knä. David frågade henne: Vad har du på hjärtat?
17 Min herre och kung, svarade hon. Du svor inför Herren, din Gud, och lovade mig att min son Salomo skulle efterträda dig på tronen,
18 men nu har Adonia blivit kung i stället utan att du ens vet om det!
19 Han har firat sin kröning genom att offra oxar, gödkalvar och en mängd får, och han har inbjudit alla dina söner och prästen Ebjatar och Joab, överbefälhavaren, men inte Salomo.
20 Nu vill hela Israel veta om du verkligen har utsett Adonia till din efterträdare.
21 Om du inte gör någonting åt detta så kommer min son Salomo och jag att avrättas som brottslingar så snart du är borta.
22-23 Medan hon fortfarande talade med kungen kom profeten Natan. Man meddelade kungen detta och han lät honom komma in i rummet. Natan bugade sig djupt för kungen
24 och frågade: Herre, har du utsett Adonia att bli kung efter dig?
25 I dag firar han sin kröning genom att offra tjurar, gödkalvar och får, och han har inbjudit dina söner till festligheterna, prästen Ebjatar och dina bästa män. De äter och dricker tillsammans med honom och ropar: 'Länge leve kung Adonia!'
26 Men prästen Sadok och Benaja och Salomo och mig har han inte bjudit.
27 Har detta skett med din vetskap? Man kan ju tro det, eftersom du inte har sagt ett ord om vilken av dina söner som du har valt att bli kung efter dig.
David väljer Salomo till tronföljare
28 Kalla tillbaka Bat-Seba! sa David.Bat-Seba kom omedelbart och gick fram till kungen igen.
29 Kung David gav då ett löfte under ed: Så sant Herren lever, han som har räddat mig från alla faror,
30 lovar jag att din son Salomo ska bli kung och sitta på min tron, precis som jag tidigare sagt under ed inför Herren, Israels Gud.
31 Då bugade sig Bat-Seba djupt inför honom och utropade: Tack, min herre och kung. Må du leva i evighet!
32 Kalla hit prästen Sadok, profeten Natan och Benaja, Jojadas son, befallde kungen.När de kom,
33 sa han till dem: Ta med er mina män och för Salomo till Gihon. Han ska rida på min egen mulåsna.
34 I Gihon ska du Sadok och du Natan smörja honom till kung över Israel. Sedan ska ni blåsa i trumpeterna och ropa: 'Länge leve kung Salomo!'
35 För honom sedan tillbaka hit och sätt honom på min tron som den nye kungen, för jag har utsett honom att härska över Israel och Juda.
36 Amen! Må det bli så! svarade Benaja och tillade:
37 Herren ska vara med Salomo, på samma sätt som han har varit med dig, och hans rike ska bli ännu mäktigare än ditt!
38 Prästen Sadok, profeten Natan och Benaja med kung Davids livvakt tog alltså med sig Salomo till Gihon, och han red på kung Davids egen mulåsna.
39 Sadok tog hornet med helig olja från tabernaklet och hällde över Salomo. Man blåste i trumpet, och allt folket ropade: Länge leve kung Salomo!
40 Sedan återvände de alla till Jerusalem under musik och jubelrop så att marken skakade.
41 Adonia och hans gäster hörde också all uppståndelse, just som de skulle avsluta sin fest.Vad är det som pågår? Varför är hela staden i uppror? frågade Joab när han hörde trumpetsignalerna.
42 Innan han hunnit säga mer kom prästen Ebjatars son Jonatan inrusande.Kom hit, sa Adonia. En man som du kommer säkert med goda nyheter.
43 Nej, tyvärr inte, ropade Jonatan. David har utropat Salomo till kung!
44-45 Han har sänt honom till Gihon tillsammans med prästen Sadok och profeten Natan och Benaja, under beskydd av kungens egen livvakt, och Salomo red på kungens egen mulåsna. Sadok och Natan har smort honom till kung där! Nu har de just kommit tillbaka, och hela staden firar det. Det är därför det är ett sådant oväsen.
46-47 Salomo sitter redan på tronen, och de styrande gratulerar David och säger: 'Gud ska välsigna dig mer genom Salomo än han har välsignat dig personligen! Ja, han ska till och med göra Salomos rike ännu större än vad ditt har varit!' Och kungen har sagt, där han ligger i sin säng:
48 'Välsignad vare Herren, Israels Gud, som har utsett en av mina söner att sitta på min tron, medan jag ännu lever och får se det med egna ögon!'
49-50 Då flydde Adonia och hans gäster i panik från festen. För att skydda sig från Salomo rusade Adonia in i Herrens tält och grep tag i hornen på altaret för att be om nåd.
51 När Salomo fick höra detta,
52 sa han: Om han uppför sig som det förväntas av honom kommer inget att hända, men annars måste han dö.
53 Kung Salomo lät kalla Adonia till sig, och man hämtade honom från altaret. När han kom bugade han sig djupt för kungen, men Salomo avfärdade honom helt kort med orden: Ge dig iväg hem!

1 Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4 And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6 And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
7 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
10 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11 Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
13 Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14 Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
15 And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
16 And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
17 And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18 And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
19 And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
20 And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21 Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
22 And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
23 And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24 And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25 For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
26 But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
27 Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
28 Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.
29 And the king sware, and said, As the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
30 Even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
32 And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
33 The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
35 Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the Lord God of my lord the king say so too.
37 As the Lord hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
38 So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
40 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
41 And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
42 And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
44 And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule:
45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
46 And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
47 And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
48 And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
49 And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50 And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51 And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me today that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
52 And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
53 So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.

David in His Old Age
1 Now King David was old and advanced in years. And although they covered him with clothes, he could not get warm. 2 Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young woman be sought for my lord the king, and let her wait on the king and be in his service. Let her lie in your arms,[a] that my lord the king may be warm.” 3 So they sought for a beautiful young woman throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the (A)Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4 The young woman was very beautiful, and she was of service to the king and attended to him, but the king knew her not.
Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King
5 Now (B)Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” (C)And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 6 His father had never at any time displeased him by asking, “Why have you done thus and so?” He was also a very handsome man, (D)and he was born next after Absalom. 7 He conferred with (E)Joab the son of Zeruiah and with (F)Abiathar the priest. And they followed Adonijah and helped him. 8 But (G)Zadok the priest and (H)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and (I)Nathan the prophet and (J)Shimei and Rei and (K)David's mighty men were not with Adonijah.
9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened cattle by the Serpent's Stone, which is beside (L)En-rogel, and he invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the royal officials of Judah, 10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the mighty men or (M)Solomon his brother.
Nathan and Bathsheba Before David
11 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that (N)Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king and David our lord does not know it? 12 Now therefore come, let me give you advice, that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go in at once to King David, and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, (O)“Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then is Adonijah king?’ 14 Then while you are still speaking with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm[b] your words.”
15 So Bathsheba went to the king in his chamber (now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to the king). 16 Bathsheba bowed and paid homage to the king, and the king said, “What do you desire?” 17 She said to him, “My lord, you swore to your servant by the Lord your God, saying, (P)‘Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’ 18 And now, behold, Adonijah is king, although you, my lord the king, do not know it. 19 (Q)He has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king, (R)Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but (S)Solomon your servant he has not invited. 20 And now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king (T)sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted offenders.”
22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in. 23 And they told the king, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he bowed before the king, with his face to the ground. 24 And Nathan said, “My lord the king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’? 25 For he has gone down this day and (U)has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king's sons, the commanders[c] of the army, and Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, (V)‘Long live King Adonijah!’ 26 (W)But me, your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he has not invited. 27 Has this thing been brought about by my lord the king and you have not told your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
Solomon Anointed King
28 Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king's presence and stood before the king. 29 And the king swore, saying, (X)“As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my soul out of every adversity, 30 (Y)as I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’ even so will I do this day.” 31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground and paid homage to the king and said, (Z)“May my lord King David live forever!”
32 King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king. 33 And the king said to them, “Take with you (AA)the servants of your lord and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to (AB)Gihon. 34 And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet there (AC)anoint him king over Israel. (AD)Then blow the trumpet and say, (AE)‘Long live King Solomon!’ 35 You shall then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, for he shall be king in my place. And I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.” 36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, “Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, say so. 37 (AF)As the Lord has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, (AG)and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, (AH)and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David's mule and brought him to Gihon. 39 There Zadok the priest took the horn of (AI)oil from the tent and (AJ)anointed Solomon. (AK)Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, (AL)“Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him, playing on pipes, and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth was split by their noise.
41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished feasting. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “What does this uproar in the city mean?” 42 While he was still speaking, behold, (AM)Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. And Adonijah said, “Come in, (AN)for you are a worthy man and bring good news.” 43 Jonathan answered Adonijah, “No, for our lord King David has made Solomon king, 44 and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the (AO)Cherethites and the Pelethites. And they had him ride on the king's mule. 45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at (AP)Gihon, and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. 46 (AQ)Solomon sits on the royal throne. 47 Moreover, the king's servants came to congratulate our lord King David, saying, (AR)‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than yours, and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king (AS)bowed himself on the bed. 48 And the king also said, ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, (AT)who has granted someone[d] to sit on my throne this day, my own eyes seeing it.’”
49 Then all the guests of Adonijah trembled and rose, and each went his own way. 50 And Adonijah feared Solomon. So he arose and went (AU)and took hold of (AV)the horns of the altar. 51 Then it was told Solomon, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, for behold, he has laid hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’” 52 And Solomon said, “If he will show himself a worthy man, (AW)not one of his hairs shall fall to the earth, but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.” 53 So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and paid homage to King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
