Filisteerna ansatte häftigt Saul och hans söner och de dödade Sauls söner Jonatan, Abinadab och Malki-Sua. När striden hårdnade omkring Saul och bågskyttarna fann honom, blev han svårt sårad av skyttarna. Han sade till sin vapenbärare: "Drag ut ditt svärd och genomborra mig så att inte dessa oomskurna kommer och skymfar mig." Men hans vapenbärare ville inte, för han var mycket rädd. Då tog Saul själv svärdet och störtade sig på det.

And the Philistines overtook[a] Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul. And the battle was heavy against Saul, and the archers[b] found him, and he was wounded by the archers.[c] And Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and deal harshly with me.” But he was very afraid. Then Saul took the sword and fell upon it.

The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.

Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.”

But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
