¹⁶ The king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?”

¹³ Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits^(A) tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus^(B) whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”

⁷ He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,^(A) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?^(B) In God’s name don’t torture me!”

⁶³ But Jesus remained silent.^(A)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath^(B) by the living God:^(C) Tell us if you are the Messiah,^(D) the Son of God.”^(E)

¹⁶ They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.^(A) “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. ¹⁷ Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax^[a](B) to Caesar or not?”

³ Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.”^(A)

⁴ “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray^(B) to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell^(C) you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.”^(D)

⁵ Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the Lord be a true^(E) and faithful^(F) witness^(G) against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us. ⁶ Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well^(H) with us, for we will obey^(I) the Lord our God.”
